  1. If it was TV, then the station would have been broadcasting for less than a year. You gotta expect that there would be a lot of crossover between radio and TV personalities for stations with the same network affiliation.
  2. And are pistachio nuts poised to be the new Lou Gehrig?
  3. Very well-considered and written. Looking forward to the remaining 365!
  4. https://www.edmundwelles.com/about/ If one is good, four is GREAT!!! That Radiohead cover is extra-delightfully...bass-clarinetty!

  6. Yeah, that's the one with Lawrence Brown. Finally got around to hearing it earlier this year. Glad I heard it.
  7. Wasn't particularly grabbed by this cut, but - I've never heard of this record until now! As an aspiring GMIII completist, gonna have to start looking for the good deal. Right now, it seems a bit pricey, but eternal vigilance is the price of collecting.

    Such a character!
  9. The lack of "fussiness" in the playing here is quite striking, at first listen, arresting even. Also, fwiw, Walker engineered the recording himself. The piano sound has the same quality as the playing. In no way is this a repertoire I could or would want to spend a lifetime exploring. But in spite of that (or maybe because of it?) this is a damn good record, imo.
  10. Ok, here's a few things... https://books.google.com/books?id=gvFyunCAQbMC&pg=PT497&lpg=PT497&dq=discapades+1950+knbc&source=bl&ots=dVOomyQTjW&sig=ACfU3U0uXdCJ9cQUBLyFdE9_NEMpTklB_g&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjkp6GZmN7mAhUFV80KHYO2DFUQ6AEwAXoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=discapades%201950%20knbc&f=false says that Lyons had a TV show on KRON. No dates are given, but check this out: https://www.montereyherald.com/2009/03/31/jazzfest-founder-was-backstage-star/ The Vallejo-born and raised son of German immigrant parents met Lyons while he was employed at KRON-TV in San Francisco. Television had just come to the West Coast in 1950, the year Vieregge completed his college education at College of the Pacific in Stockton. Lyons, a DJ at KNBC, had added television to his repertoire with a program that introduced jazz musicians through live performance and interviews. Vieregge had moved to KGO after a year at KRON and worked nights handling stage design, lighting and management for the locally produced shows. Then this:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_stations_in_the_San_Francisco_Bay_Area#KRON-TV The city's third station was KRON (Channel 4), which began broadcasting on November 15, 1949, with studios in the basement of the San Francisco Chronicle (hence the name KRON[icle]), which owned and operated the station, and a transmitter on San Bruno Mountain. So, January 2, 1950 might have been some "new year's special" live broadcast, which might be what Lyons means when he refers to "this auspicious tete-a-tete". That's a helluva lot of "might"s, though... From the radio angle, here's a station guide date January 3, 1950 (from The Californian, out of Salinas: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/31549922/radio_program_listings_03_jan_1950/ You can see that Discapades comes on KNBC at midnight, or at least it did that night. KRON was owned by the SF Chronicle, but it, like KNBC was an NBC affiliate. KNBC, though, was owned directly by NBC. So...there's a lot of "could be"s here, but nothing definite.
  11. The Ellis intro sounds like the same guy on the Brubeck, just a little more "on".
  12. Hale Smith actually had a bit of a reputation as a composer in then-modern "classical" circles as well. To the extent that he's "known" anywhere, he might be better known there than in jazz. https://www.discogs.com/artist/862613-Hale-Smith
  13. Not really sure what is left to obtain, but I try to pick up anything I see by that band. There's still a good amount that's not made it past they grey-market (on LP as well as CD), and I have no idea what still exists in collector's circuits. The surprise hit for me was Queen Disc Q-003, Shrine Auditorium 1949. Yusef Lateef is on there (his sound is unmistakable, and somebody cheers him on with "Go Bill!")and stretches out on, iirc, "Ool-Ya-Koo". It's a magnificent solo, but then it fades out....sigh...

Try his collaborations with Eve Packer. Something different!
  15. Well, most people have two ears, one on each side of their head.
  16. I know that Jimmy Lyons was a Disc Jockey. but he might have also had a live show from time to time, in-studio or location. But if this was location, I think he'd be pimpin the club? Or maybe that's not Jimmy Lyons at all? Lyons regular show was on KNBC and was called Discapades. If you could get some other sample of Lyons' voice, a comparison could be made. surely there's plenty out there? Same.
  17. Monk is indeed present on almost all tracks. The liners, thought, call this a location recording by Jerry Newman, not broadcasts. I wish there was some secret science to punch up the recordings just a bit, to add presence. The band's ensemble was not yet fully formed, but still, Klook is kicking their ass and when they punch, they punch. The Salle Pleyel and Pasadena concerts (both with Chano Pozo, btw) give you the best sensations of this, but still, this was a helluva band at any point of it's life.
  18. The singer on "Button Up...." sounds a bit more polished than does this Barbara Ritchie, don't you think?
  19. I'm not blaming anybody for this, because imo, "Media Mail" is Spanish for "don't have ANY expectations, it'll get there when it gets there". But this is perhaps the most extreme example of that I've yet encountered, via Dusty Groove, order placed after-hours 12/15, expected delivery = 12/30: Dec 29 2019 11:44 am Arrived at USPS Regional FacilityUSPS DALLAS TX NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER Dec 28 2019 09:18 pm Departed USPS Regional FacilityUSPS DES MOINES IA NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER Dec 28 2019 05:01 pm Arrived at USPS Regional Origin FacilityUSPS DES MOINES IA NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER Dec 27 2019 12:00 am In Transit to Next FacilityUSPS Dec 23 2019 10:38 pm Arrived at USPS Regional Origin FacilityUSPS CHICAGO IL NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER Dec 23 2019 09:23 pm Accepted at USPS Origin FacilityUSPS CHICAGO, IL, 60622 Dec 16 2019 04:08 pm Shipment Received, Package Acceptance Pending USPS CHICAGO, IL, 60607 Ok, that's an order with just two items. Realistically, two weeks for a Media Mail shipment is not particularly outrageous. But... Here's a Media Mail order for six items placed on 12/21, already delivered (on 12/28) and (mostly) listened to! 20. Not an OG, some Scorpio-WG/NRP pressing of less than perfect vinility. But good enough. Note (fwiw) the presence of Emil Richards (RIP). And also Gary Coleman (not the actor), a name familiar if you read credits on a buttload full of LA pop records from back in the day. This music was once deemed "exotic", "difficult", "eccentric", etc. Here in 2019 (almost 2020), it sounds so...normal. And beautiful!
  21. Interesting arrangement...
