  1. I get what I think he meant. Warne, coming out of Bach as much as anybody, often used regularly paced eighth note lines as his building blocks, then genius-ized them whit his internal accents and displacements. Your friend probably heard that as "Swing Era", like Hawk or Chu or something, running them eighth notes. But of course your friend was/is wrong. Just goes to show you the peril of thinking in categories, of trying to take what we hear and make it an equivalent-ish of something we've already heard. It's a natural inclination, of course, we all do it, but sometimes it's not a bad idea to stop it, just stop it, because we reach such an absurd conclusion as this one. If you want to "understand" Warne, I think you need to understand Bach as well as Pres as well as Bird as well as a lot of non-musical stuff. Then you can grasp him as an individual contributor without resorting to the cheap boxing-up of the categorization impulse.
  2. Dan Gould FTW.
  3. Because Category Or It Doesn't Exist?

    Collections

I still like buying shit just to hear it. That's why I'm not too picky about vinyl condition, cd packaging, etc. Not as long as it's priced accordingly. I don't really "collect", I obtain. When somebody else takes it over, that's when it will be a "collection". Right now, it's just music that I like to have on hand, for if and when.
  8. Hire more dead people!
  9. It's really not. (I hope...). Just a random thought that came to mind Saturday morning while listening to Intensity (where, to be honest, Frank Butler stole my show). Trying to get a mental image of Art Pepper playing that (or any other) record, he's pretty, uh...personal, right? Never had the privilege of seeing him in person while he was alive (or, come to think of it, after he wasn't), so, you know, ask the experts. Not unlike wondering what Eva Gabor's bra size was, a thought that came to mind while binging Green Acres (a project in progress, to be sure) and Brenda says, oh, she's kinda small-chested, I thought she'd have been bigger, how much you talk about how pretty she was (meeeeeeeeow), only the Internet has that information, if you can believe the internet.
  10. Both, big AND tall.
  11. Med Flory was a big guy, but supposedly he was mocking about Warne Marsh, so fuck him, he was just tall, that's all.
  12. Talk about a program of contrasts....
  13. It's a Hendersonian tenor-posture.
  14. The big MCA/LOC deal was in 2011, btw https://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/10/arts/music/10masters.html
  15. Oh, I would definitely recommend that they use Mosaic as a model. Mosaic - and they're not going out of business, they just act like they are, I think - would always talk to their customers, and always give straight answers, even if it was uncomfortable to do so. OG customers remember how long that first set of releases took to for real come out - long after our checks had been cashed. They owned it and asked for trust. Well, they earned it. Resonance can do business as they see fit, of course, but maybe the fact that the warehouse fire that has everybody all "atwitter" (wow...) had no impact on their sourcing of the Decca material...ya' think that might be a major selling point? And pitch correction? A big deal, maybe? Talk about burying the lede... It's good to know that it matters to them. It would be nice to know that it matters to them that it matters to us, that not everybody will settle for that Jodi Puhols thing because we all hongry dogs sloppin' at the shit bowl. Unless we are, in which case, we fuck ourselves.
  16. Maybe people already have it? But if somebody even thinks they might want it, yeah, hella good deal.
  17. LaCock for the block, Peter.
  18. Among other things, he was the first I ever heard twkl about Monk being genuinely institutionalized. Ramsey had done a gig at the hospital where Monk was, and said that Monk would just sit there quietly all day, ocasionally psinting. I asked him what dId Monk paint, and he said, sky, just blue sky.
  19. No tickets to the holographic spectacular for you! The real answer is that I was playing an Art Pepper record this morning and the question came to mind. I didn't bother asking why it did becsuse, why? It's, like, a friver''s license thing . Like, if there was a Topps Art Pepper card, then the Internet would have it. And now, with this thread, the Internet DOES has it, for the next person, and for every next person, any person who wants to know but fears to speak to the wild informational orgy of untamed nformation that is Organissimo. Some people are bashful about certain things, and we need to embrace that without becoming it.
