  1. All of the "prestigious" awards involve processes, which by definition involve "politics". It's not like five guys named Moe show up for coffee one day and one Moe says, oh yeah, about these awards, whaddya' say we give Reggie Workman a piece this year, and all the other Moes say, yeah, that'll work. Now who else?

    Anthony Braxton

I don't know if it necessarily sounds "good", but AB & Haggard...more than a little curious to see/hear the lens (lenses?) that goes through on its way to what process on its way to the final music. I hope there are copious liner notes, and I do mean copious!
  3. Everything is political, so if you want his nomination to gain traction, do the work and find the streams through which the juice flows. I guarantee you that everybody who gets one of these or those other things has had their people advocating to those people for as long as it took for the notion to take root and sprout. Joe Chambers would be a great choice, btw. But be ready to do more than just nominate.
  4. This is the kind of record I wish had come out when I had time to just listen to one side of one record at a time, over and over, days/weeks of nothing else, learn every little thing on there inside and out. Now that I don't have that kind of time, I wish he had edited his composition to make it more compact...or take one or two parts and expand them out as a record unto themselves. But that's my problem, not his. This is fertile music indeed, and even if you can "spot the influence" at any given time, there's a momentum that has me hoping that this is nowhere near the final form this man's music is going to take. Onward!
  5. As will Dorthann Kirk! Not sure if Bobby McFerrin needs the money, though...maybe he could give his award to Down Beat to build that Hank Mobley wing in their HOF.
  6. He's done a lot of stuff off the radar of his "don't worry///" moment of fame. Very talented and thoughtful performer. Not sure how he falls in the pantheon of this particular award, but he's certainly not a lightweight. Get them in the Down Beat Hall Of Fame, them and Hank!
  7. That's a tinyass bandstand? How big was the room itself?
  8. Dorthaan, like Rahsaan. Never had to look it up:
  9. If you've heard of that tune, you've heard of Dorthaan Kirk!
  10. I bought one sheet, it's around here somewhere.
  11. Not a bad class, led by Roscoe!
  12. Also, when you give these records a little thumb ping on the rim, they don't sounds like a vinyl lp, they sounds hollow or something. Words perhaps faile me on this.
  13. By bend/flex, I mean just holding them regularly, two hands @ 9 & 3. They don't feel like other records I have from the same time.
  14. Wow. I wish I could get my Pandora to act like that.
  15. At work, but the three I got from the folks are Lombardoland, The Glenn Miller Story OST, and Bing's Merry Christmas. They all have the cool Decca white plastic "envelope" inner sleeve. They all feel a bit brittle too. Not dangerously so, just, like, they got NO bend in them at all. None. Here ya' go: https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/styrene-lps.47655/ example:
  16. That's not been my Pandora experience at all. They never cluster the same artist like that. Then again, I use the free service. Maybe premium plays by different rules.
  17. I have several 12" Decca LPs that I got from my folks' collection that are definitely not vinyl. Nor rainbow label either. These are 1950s jobs all.
  18. Some early LPs were made of styrene (or whatever it was called) and were VERY breakable. Decca comes to mind immediately. I think that's what they hype was about. But can you break an unbreakable vinyl record? Hell yeah, sure you can.
  19. I meant modern, but sure, we can go with contemporary if you like? Panodra is not allowed to play the same artist more than one time every 15-20 minutes or so? That's just leader dates, though.
  20. Should I stop listening to American music for the time being?
