  1. The counter-argument to that, though, is that there's no break in the sound, it's seamless, straight through the entire set. I don't know what they did, but it sounds fantastic.
  2. Elvin for you car -
  3. Gesundheit!
  4. how, uh...thoughtful of them?
  5. on that cut it's Chick & Jan Hammer, together! Jan Hammer could play. On those Butler Elvins (Genesis, this one, and Mr. Jones, and of course, Lighthouse - a different sort from the others, but still), it wasn't that it was a great band of seasoned vets that attracted attention, it was the core of Elvin's real band, and added guests that were NOT yet well-seasoned vets that made them "exciting" to younger audiences. People might forget, but Elvin was nudging up to the verge of crossover success right around this time, and Blue Note tried to help with Norman Seeff cover photos and such, but then Black Byrd happened and, oh well. But those records are their own "thing" in terms of Elvin's history, nothing really like them either before or after. And GREAT covers! They were pretty to look at.
  6. That's one short of a Jeopardy category!
  7. and decreased the Brazils.
  8. you do hear the audience, but it could still be a live location recording, no?
  9. Where are all these videos today, legally, that is?
  10. Ah, that's right. So the Henderson 1938 Grand Terrace broadcast was likely facilitated by RCA studio staff? Or what, did NBC have a big radio presence in Chicago? Just wondering, because these airshots are really vivid. I'm wondering were they actual broadcasts or maybe recorded live for transcription purposes (am I saying that right?). In other words are these technically "airshots" at all? I HATE YouTube sound...but even here, Israel Crosby! Those drums are poppin'!
  11. Excellent, thanks! I wonder if they had the same crew there that they did at the Grand Terrace in 1938.
  12. or, if you don't like Rhodes... But no Elvin there. Yeah, THERE'S some commercial music for the masses. The masses should've paid more attention!
  13. These things are fake, but the robocalls from the IRS are real!
  14. were they from/through NBC, like the Henderson?
  15. I like that Elvin record a lot, but producer George Butler let a clam stay in the head of "La Fiesta" that is unforgivable. Other than that, though great record.
  16. will there be Scotch Snaps?
  17. I thought I might want to go back and look at the Charles Brown set, so I did. So much for that idea...that shit be high!
  18. Speech rhythms/patterns in music, interesting. Trans-cultural (continental!) pollinations even more so. Appropriations resulting in perhaps permanently blurred lines as a result of all that, hey, here we are.
  19. Picked up a CD of two Fletcher Henderson airshots from the Grand Terrace, 1938, NBC. I'm struck by how clear the recording is and how detailed the rhythm section is picked up (and with people such as Israel Crosby & Lawrence Lucey, the details are delicious, as is the ability to hear Pete Suggs' brushwork at all). Wondering if this level of clarity was a characteristic of the Grand Terrace setup, the local NBC engineer's acumen, some combination of the two, or what. Would like to hear other Grand Terrace airshots of similar music from about the same time to compare. What all is out there to he had?
  20. Richard Farnon? Not a familiar Farnon to be, please advise?
  21. Let's play Date!
  22. Ok, Purist Vampires, here's a spaceship full of 20th Century Garlic for your ass! Far out AND groovy!
