What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
JSngry replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
Yeah, but they generally survive more or less unscathed. With Tchaikovsky it seems that it just gets left as is, another cloying version of a cloying melody, with changes to match. And oh yeah - now you have pop song lyrics of the same ilk. -
What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
JSngry replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
There are composers I approach with reservation on general principles, and that guy's one of them. For one reason - but not the only reason - he's been responsible for so many dreadful pop songs that required next to no transformation or modification. -
Don't know how "Hawaiian" it actually is...that's why I bought it, to find out.

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Found this today for $4.99. Don't think I'll like it, but it's worth a fin to find out!

Yeah, we're kinda buzzed. We early-birded two season tickets and got 4 for the price of 5. We've seen Dover Quartet twice, and I swear, if I was gonna "deadhead" anybody right now, it would be those guys. If they come anywhere near you, do what you gotta do to be there. Trust me on this one. Apart from that, if anybody's looking for some unfamiliar music to get into, string quartets are meaty (in all kinds of ways), especially rep from, say, Beethoven forward, especially from the late 1800's on, and especially, especially, live. Don't trust a record to get it right, ever, but especially with this stuff. Do the work, get there early, and sit right down as far in it as you can get. Just go see some meaty meat, not the wedding reception wedding food type.

I remember it as the music that ruined irony for me.

very good concert too!

I took note that 2/3 of the program was provably less than 100 years old. I also took note that the same could not be said about the audience.

Tonight, the Pavel Haas Quartet will perform: Dmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No.7 in F-sharp minor, Op.108 (1960) Dmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No.8 in C minor, Op.110 (1960) Antonín Dvořák: String Quartet No.14 in A-flat major, Op.105 (1895) And I will be there to hear it. Unless something really bad happens.

"Laura" from the Enja LP is, perhaps, my favorite George Coleman solo, period.

I can only speak for Ohio, but they had elderly service options that included basic needs like house-cleaning, nothing intense, but enough to keep the dishes from piling up and drawing rats, stuff like that. He might not need that now, but...always "easier" to know what your options are before you need them, as best you can. Perhaps Missouri is not as aged/ill as Ohio...I sure hope not. But most every state is getting older and sicker, so...

I can't stress enough the importance of looking into whatever government resources are available in the area, state/county/city. Don't assume that all such assistance is means-tested. Assume nothing until you know from direct contact. There may be resources you have at your disposal that you can use. In my experience, you have to find it out yourself, they don't really "advertise" (and the "medical establishment" might want the business themselves). Every state is different, but you'll want to at least inquire. Also - if your dad has any religious affiliation, check out what services are available from there. It might not be much, but anything you can get that he can use, hey. As if you don't have enough to do...

They appear to be Bob Shad related. Mostly material from the Sittin' In/Jax labels, although that Getz/Billie thing, I don't know where that one began life.

College-gate...that's what I call it.
JSngry replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No, I didn't. I don't think about anything about this that you do. To me it's just assholes assholing. Simple as that. That's what assholes do - they asshole. And, you know, assholing is not off-limits in this thread, but politics is (and there really is some cleaning up due here, but I'm too busy right now), and trying to fan the flames of a dead-since Friday thread with some political trolling...nope, not having it here.
