What live music are you going to see tonight?

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 - 7:30pm - $15 THE MAKAYA MCCRAVEN QUARTET Community Music School of Springfield - 127 State Street - Springfield, MA The ensemble includes Makaya McCraven, drums, Greg Ward, alto saxophone, Justin Thomas, vibraphone and Junius Paul, bass. -
You guys are tough. Not even the seal of approval from winning the Monk competiton apparently means anything around here. My standards are not as high apparently. I like MOPDTK and I have enjoyed Irabagon the times I have heard him live with Mary Halvorson and most recently Dave Douglas. I also really like Keefe Jackson and Jason Rigby. Niether Evans or Irabagon are artists I feel the need to go out of my way to hear just yet, but I feel they both have something to say that on certain days I want to hear.

Now listening to a private recording of a Sunny Murray performance from 1989 in Raab, Austria with Raux, Curtis Clark and Tony Overwater. Never heard of him before so I did a good search and came across this old thread. I am intrigued.

I have that disc. It has been a while since I listened to it, but I do recall a favorable initial response. Will have to pull it out again.

Craig Taborn's Chants & Satoko Fujii's Spring Storm
relyles replied to CraigP's topic in New Releases
I think the Taborn is fantastic. Also one of my favorite 2013 releases. Have not heard the Fujii yet, but I am a fan and it is on my want list. I had the pleasure of hearing both Taborn and Fujii live this year and neither one disappointed. -

The piano was very audible the night I went with Kris Davis, Dave Burrell and Marilyn Crispell - although I do think that generally the sound in roulette sucks. -

Interesting how perspectives can be different. I was not at Vision Festival the night this band performed, but I read a facebook post of someone who felt just the opposite - that the other members of the band did not engage Tusques and instead basically shut him out. -
I heard his quartet live at the intimate Firehouse 12 a couple of years ago. I have also heard many recordings he appears on - in particular with Mostly Other People Do The Killing. I respect his obvious mastery of the trumpet, including a wide range of extended techniques. Some of the actual music he has created outside of his original quartet or with MOPDTK has not really connected for me, but he is certainly a "star" within the realm he operates.

Today is the first free concert of the summer in the park. We have two separate series. A Thursday night series starting tonight headlined by the Jimmy Greene quartet that goes for four weeks. July 8th will be the first night of the six week Monday Night Jazz series. -
The new recording does not really have many up-tempo tunes. But Steve, from your posts I get the sense you prefer your music at full blast most of the time anyway.

It is an excellent recording as is the first recording by this same trio. IMO Eskelin is one of the most interesting tenor saxophonists around and I think I have confessed my Gerald Cleaver groupie status here before. It is also a good way to get introduced to Eskelin for those who are reluctant to dive into his more boundary pushing releases as it concentrates on standards. Good stuff!

I considered driving up for the Ravi Coltrane show, but that is the first day of a local free series. Wednesday I went down to the Village Vanguard and caught Greg Osby. Tonight is the final concert in the Spring Series at Firehouse 12 in New haven featuring Ches Smith and These Arches. Considering heading down to Roulette for the Saturday lineup of the Vision Festival. -
Since it is official today, Happy Birthday!

Haven't had a chance to check this out yet, but the book An Unsung Cat is a must read for any Warne Marsh fan. -

Very enjoyable performance last night. As expected the band performed compositions by Chicago fifties hard bop musicians as well as originals from within the group. An added delight was several tunes by Dutch composers Guus Jansen and Eric Boeren. Apparently, this winter People, Places & Things recorded with Dutch musicians for a later release and these tunes are on that release. the band has the right combination of structure/precision, and edginess that makes even fifties era tunes sound contemporary. Haldeman was particularly impressive displaying a wide range, good tone and strong technique. The sound in the church was a liitle muddy and Ward did not project as well (I think his sound is not as big to start), but overall very good performance. I was tempted to try to get permission to catch them tonight at Cornelia Street CAfe in NY, but just found out my wife has to work tonight. So no road trip for me today. Next up Saturday night: Saturday, May 25, 2013 WILLIAM PARKER - contrabass violin, shakuhachi, sinter ǀ JOE MORRIS - guitar ǀ STEPHEN HAYNES - cornet IMPROVISATIONS Real Art Ways - 56 Arbor Street – Hartford -

Thursday, May 23, 2013 MIKE REED’S PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS United Congregational Church - 300 Appleton St. - Holyoke, MA Mike Reed’s People Places & Things includes Mike Reed, drums, Greg Ward, alto sax, Tim Haldeman, tenor sax and Jason Roebke, bass. -
So the group would not really be that "new" since Soskin and Cranshaw both have history with Rollins.

Irabagon-Helias-Altschul May 16th Cornelia Street Cafe
relyles replied to Steve Reynolds's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I caught Altschul with the Gebhard Ullmann/Steve Swell quartet two years ago and before than in a Dave Douglas group with Roswell Rudd. Both times he (as well as the entire band) sounded great. -

Craig Taborn Trio with Thomas Morgan and Gerald Cleaver @ Firehouse 12 in New Haven, CT. Is that Greg Hopkins the trumpeter? He performed in Hartford last Friday with Earl MacDonald and the Hartford Jazz Society's New Directions ensemble as a last minute replacement. -
Anyone order online from Downtown Music Gallery?
relyles replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have ordered from DMG many times with no problem. They typically do not send a confirmation until the order is being shipped. Since my understanding is that most its business is mail order these days, I can't see why DMG would not ship to Dutchess County. No minimums for online that I am aware of. Indeed, I have ordered as few as two CDs from them before. -
Years ago a friend turned me on to Rosengren and I have enjoyed what I heard. I wish I had more recent examples of his playing to cite, but I recall really enjoying Notes From Underground which was by his mid seventies ensemble featuring tommy Koverhult. I have also heard a more recent recording by Summit Meeting titled Bent's Jump, which has more inside playing by Rosengren that I vaguely recall enjoying.
