  1. Last week I was in Ann Arbor for EdgeFest. 4-5 sets a night for four days. Good mix of music. Highlights for me were Air Legacy, Myra Melford Splash Trio and Darius Jones Trio.
  2. In 1989 or 1990 my father organized a jazz dinner event in Brooklyn. I was recently out of college and did not drink, but somehow I wound up being the bartender for the event. Shamek Farrah and Norman Person were the leaders and Sonelius Smith was also in the band. I do not remember the rest of the musicians. At the time I had only been listening to jazz for a couple years and had no idea who the musicians were. I just knew that it was my father's friend "Tony", who if I remember correctly he collaborated with to organize the event with. Around that same time I had a copy of Impressions, but still did not know about the statute of Strata-East in the community. It was sometime after that I became more knowledgeable about the label and the musicians on it. I enjoyed reading this article and the memories it generated.
  3. He is only credited on trumpet.
  4. Although I could never afford, or ever be willing to pay the price for the first three rows, it is not as insane when thinking of it as a fundraiser, which is the primary purpose. I imagine it would not be as shocking when compared with other non-profit fundraiser events.
  5. Despite the heat, it was good to see you last night Cliff!
  6. I know a writer that has started doing research in order to write a Andrew Hill biography.
  7. This past Saturday I caught this: Eternal Spirit: Vijay Iyer & Friends Celebrate The Music of Andrew Hill Harlem Stage Gatehouse New York, NY Vijay Iyer - piano, music director Nicole Mitchell - flute, alto flute Mark Shim - tenor saxophone Milena Casado - trumpet, flugelhorn Yuhan Su - vibraphone Devon Gates - bass Reginald Workman - bass Nasheet Waits - drums
  8. Since hearing a group led by Vijay Iyer playing Andrew Hill's music this past weekend, I have been in the mood to listen to Hill's music in my daily listening. Monday I started with the Black Fire sessions, then decided that I wanted to focus on the post Blue Note seventies recordings. Yesterday I listened to this one: This is the selection for today:
  9. I have heard her live and she is very impressive. Interestingly, the first time I heard her live was playing in an ensemble led by Allen Lowe.
  10. I purchased the digital version of this:
  11. It's a classic.
  12. I will be very interested in reading your impressions on those recordings. I have many of them in my collection. I might just listen to each as you share your work.
  13. I have been reading the book in small chunks for the past week or so. I got through all the interviews and I am not reading the pieces on the specific recordings. I am really enjoying the additional insight the book gives on Shipp generally, and specifically the RogueArt recordings. I have a few of the recordings in my collection and have already started pulling some of them out for listening.
  14. I have the ensembles prior release and have also heard some radio broadcasts from concerts. I have enjoyed what I heard in the past and based on that I will likely pick this up at some point.
  15. I watched all three episodes Friday night and enjoyed. It did not necessarily reveal much that I did not already know, but I appreciate how the story was told.
  16. This thread motivated me to pull out my copy of Senior Cookin' for my after work listening, which I am enjoying right now.
  17. It has been a while since I had one of my impulsive binges. 18. I ordered a couple days ago directly from RogueArt. Much looking forward to reading this. I wish I had ordered sooner so that I would have it in hand when traveling next week. I will be spending a lot of time in airports and on flights. Guess I will just have to read the Threadgill bio.
  19. I just ordered that book.
  20. Gary Bartz?
