WAS JUST CHILLING WITH MY MAIN MAN LEE RITENOUR, JUST HANGIN OUT, LIKE TWO REGULAR DUDES- I WAS ALL, WHATS UP WITH THE SONNY CRISS SESSION U DID, WARM AND SONNY(?) (actaully it was ''joy of sax''....)..... cause here u have sonny criss, like the greatest bebop alto player ever almost, so my question was essentially.....did sonny accept contemporary jazz, or did he not dig it etc... rit had this to say: he said it was orrin keepnews who put those sessions together, for sonny rollins, joe henderson, bobby hutcherson, with a fusion r.s., havey mason, patrice rushen,- he said: it didnt work. sonny criss was such a purist, and it didnt gel, he said although he felt very privleged to play on that for sonny, it didnt work. i was saying yea but it still is a beautiful album and it shows what could of been had sonny been around longer. i didnt elaborte futher but i was thinking like Hank, never got to really do a date like that. but sonny did. i also asked him: did you at all know grant green personally? he said no but he was a huge fan of course, to which i said hell yeah

http://www.recordsale.de/cdpix/g/gene_ammons-biggest_soul_hits.jpg how did i pass on this in the 2 dollar bin for a day. can someone tell me how i passed on this for a day? this is, maybe, the coolest jazz record i have. absouetly the best greatest hits record have. this one has all the hits. Funky. Jammin' With Gene. The Happy Blues. Blue Ammons. The Twister. Blue Gene. all on one lp? yes all on one lp. be it they are *severely* edited, funky goes from like what, 16 min to 2 min? but its okay cause they cut it to..........FEATURE GENE AMMONS. its like taking the dean beneddit appoach, but padding it out a little for the regular consumer market. its really an awesome lp. also picked up today a white label promo copy of gene ammons: the 78 era, and i have to say, in this case the vinyl manufactuing on the white label promos are aboustely different + better than standard issue. they are aboustely on thicker vinyl. aboustely. i have like quit a bit now of early 70s era prestige white label promos (even intensity), and so far they all have by far been thicker than standard issue in summary: funky, jammin with gene, and the happy blues: all on one vangelder stamped lp i swear to god rudy just did a fadeout where he cranked the reverb REAL high to make it seem like its getting more distant then he faded out volume

Savoy Gospel

i dont think posting this is going to hinder my chances of finding records, so im gonna share with you all: omg, i am in love with Savoy gospel. first off all the records go well into the early 80s, its the last connection to the great bebop label of yesteryear. but this has nothing to do with the jazz message of hank mobley #1 & #2. these records are the funkiest records in my collection. the are abouste J-A-M-S. another point is it is very REGIONAL, all the lps specifically feature where exactly the lp was recorded, be it a choir from a church in southern california, neberaska, or greensville S.C. ( i have all of these). this one guy REV. JAMES CLEVLEAND i notice on many of the lps, like he went and guested with choirs all over the country. i dont know anything about him yet, but he was a long term savoy gospel artist. another matter alltogether is the discogrphy. it is MASSIVE. lets just forget for a min about all the rvg cut 50s issues (theres a ton), in the 70s and 80s alone the list is massive. 50s and 60s not even counting. i bet you NOBODY, has a compete savoy gospel collection. it is aboustely a humongus list of lps unlike with jazz lps, the best savoy gospel lps, are not the 1950s-60s vangelder stamped ones....the best are the ones from the early 80s. i have this one from 1983 and the one im listening to from 1980 right now, are aboustely DROPPIN' IT. this one right now kicks off with a 15 minute funk jam called "My god can do it all" (parts I & II). from what i can gather, going to black church in the early 80s was like going to a really good funk concert with a giganic band (lots of people singin, big presence, sounds great!). organ plays a major role. sometimes synthesizers are involved too this rev. james cleavland lp live at carnegie hall 1977 i got (2 lp set i believe)...the back has one guy on organ, but another guy is on clavinet or polymoog or something like that, i know its against the rules but if i was around at the time i would of definetly stayed up all night drinkin' the thunderbird, then go to church and move and groove and dance all morning long. jsngry, i know youd come with me, lol heres the link, watch for yourself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd9U_q58f8w

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
so its only on the japan version of the box set? is that in regards to cd + lp versions? i thought it was a bonus 45 rpm which included this track when you bought the complete LP version. domestic, or intl, i dont know. i have mp3 of it-- its still awesome even though hank doesnt blow. he gets to say a few words, its good. hes all, i thought i was the oldest cat who recorded for blue note, but lou donaldson has me beat, lol -
