OMG SO I actually hooked up the nov. 1984 issue of KEYBOARD magazine- Tony Banks cover article: TONY BANKS AND THE EVOLUTION OF GENESIS, but also it turns out, theres a sizable article re- vic feldman, who in 1984 who as you know from my rantings, is one, who in the 80s, made the most legitimate, valid, "smooth jazz" style records in the whole of the eighties. in the pic he is standing by a rhodes chroma (not a fender rhodes, but a powerful synth), prophet T-8 (like joe zawinul uses) and a Roland JX8P, used by people like soft cell and talk talk, etc ill quote the article in this post later on or perhaps i can maybe scan it all on here

Jimmy Smith's organ sound post-1957?
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez replied to Shawn's topic in Artists & Recordings
OMG DON'T EVEN GET CHEWY STARTED OVER HERE! jimmys circa 1957 sound is by far and way with 100% certainity the pinnacle of JOS music- he was *really* playin the organ, during this period- after sucessess on the level of "chicken shack" which was a really new and unique phonomenon in the genesis of hard bop/blue note music- he tried to repeat the forumla way 2 many times (rockin' the boat?) until finnally he sold out to verve. also not as balsy it is interesting to hear him with an orchestra, they are creative records, to say the least. the most relevatnt JOS-related item is his 1957 date with Mobley, Byrd, and Donaldson at Manhattan Towers on Feburary 11th, 1957. Jimmy may have pulled his pants down on stage when i saw him in 2004, but he music "pulled his pants down on stage" in 1964 To all those who love him, I say bravo- if you dig it, you dig it, and im cool with that, and i kinda dig it too in a way, and im cool w/ you about it. Ain't hatin' here, but did I hear anyone say Onsaya Joy, live at the half note 1975? oo that lp is hot! ouch!! -
BTW, anytime bird is playing with frank morgan : you know youre on the right track.

did you guys see this? im a little worried... Oscar Films Louis Saturday, Nov 29, 2008 6:01AM Louis Armstrong's life story is the subject of a new major motion picture and the executive producer is his former manager, Associated Booking Corp.'s Oscar Cohen. The film, starring and directed by Forest Whitaker, is the first to be authorized by the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. Academy Award-winning screenwriter Ron Bass of "Rain Man" fame is also on board. It is unclear when the film is slated for production. Cohen will share his personal accounts of Armstrong's life in biographical form, according to a statement. After getting his start as an office boy in the late 1940's, Cohen followed the singer throughout his career to become Satchmo's road manager and later his manager after the death of Joe Glaser. Glaser formed Associated Booking Corp. with Louis Armstrong in 1940. -
my rec would be the "bird's eyes" series, volumes 1 through 1 million. from what ive heard phil woods and chan ran, or provided source tapes for, or had some connection to the label...(is this correct?) i dont have all of them in fact i feel bad i never bought any way back when tower stocked them all- but i have a few and they are really amazing, esp the one with the gene roland big band with bird and don lanphere

chuck, how would a label like STASH generally go about operating? They were investors who knew jazz collectors with the necessary tapes in their private collection-- mastered them onto cd, and sold them in back-end catelogues and stores? and then end product- retaining all the profits?

i dunno but here in town one record store guy has a slew of sealed nimbus pressings that hes had for years he said, the 1st one i bought for 15.99. then i asked him if he had more-- like 2 years later he brought em in to the store- marked them all like 59.99. its not even a speciality store its all mostly low end lps and cds, etc....they'll probably be still all be there on horaces 175th b-day celebration. if the guy wasnt such a sonofabitch i would of totally bought up a lot if they were like ten a pop

I would enjoy learning more about the history of "record-clubs" and how they operated, both from a business and audiophile standpoints, etc....like columbia house and Rca record club or what have you...

oh, ps: did mickey harts dad go completely insane on lsd in the 60s?
-
Q: i was just reading about how mickey harts father ran off with over 100K of dead profits and was later arrested down in san diego, where he was baptizing people. the circumstances surrounding this led mickey hart to step away from the band, (returning a few yrs later), but my Q. is about that, what are the specifics regarding mickeys decsion to step down-- did the band fire him, or was it voluntary, etc.
