Archie Shepp "Un Pot D'eau Trop Chaud" Parisian Concert cd
robertoart replied to l p's topic in Discography
well, there are only about 4-5 official and bootleg shepp concert releases from the 1970's. for me, live 1970's shepp is hit and miss, mostly depending on the tune being played. btw, someone claiming to be shepp replied to my email: Subject: re: [Fwd: Archie Shepp - Parisian Concert, Vol. 2 CD] Yes. "Things Have Got To Change"; written by Calvin Massey. Sincerely AShepp >Archie Shepp - Parisian Concert, Vol. 2 CDImpro vol. 2 >track 6. Un Pot d'Eau Trop Chaud (19:14) >is the correct name of this tune "things have got to change"? >thank you No posts from Archie Shepp yet? The fact that his name is spelt right in the correspondence is good evidence it really is Mr. Shepp -
I had the vinyl in the late 80's. For some reason I sold it and never replaced it. I should track it down again too. It would be like a new release to me after all this time. I remember reading a review at the time in Downbeat or Wire (can't remember which one) saying that this session was fairly weak and could have stayed unreleased. I remember it as very much a standards session with a similar feel to the Born To Be Blue album first released around the same time. Just a bit more low key, but same feel. Big Tenor, beautiful piano and of course GG.

You might find it interesting, because the documentary maker does not have any archival footage or info to use, so instead it focuses on oral history and connecting with those still alive that new CC. It's an incredibly grass roots approach, you would like it I'm sure.

Have you seen this? In the documentary they revisit Charlie Christian's home town and honour him with a graveside ceremony.

I hate the 2 Wes Anderson movies I've seen (that one & Life Aquatic) about as much as I hate Groundhog Day. In fact, I can't think of anything I've liked with Bill Murray post-SNL. Lost In Translation and Broken Flowers? The 'Lolita' scene in Broken Flowers is funny. I like watching the characters he plays kind of drift through life while things just seem to 'happen' to him. Talk about nonchalant -

There's a Van Eyck in Detroit. Nice. All those New Yorky downtown arty bike riding through traffic types seem to dig radical Black Music I heard the Neil Young cover on our downtown arty bike riding through traffic radio station. I quite liked it. I remember playing a 'jam' gig at a party many years ago (as I often did) and someone kept yelling 'kick out the jams'. I didn't know what it meant at the time so I thought he didn't like our music. -
Black Lassie And some very interesting and edgy guitar from Eric Gale. CTI.

I'm not sure how you got that conclusion out of anything I said, or anybody else. By not doing more, and not doing anything very quickly at all, he enabled Sandusky. He also effectively enabled him by allowing him continued access to the PSU facilities with little boys when he KNEW Sandusky had been fired for likely abusing little boys. I hope you'd agree as a Debate Coach (or whatever you claimed to be in the past) that enabling somebody and being the reason somebody does something are two different things. Again, it is your constitutional right to be enabled to believe what you want to believe. I prefer fact over unfounded and media inspired hysteria. After those Penn State authorities go to trial, I think you will find the truth will out. Many of you guys are extremely thick-headed about this. You're all about keeping the circle waaaaay too small. The real issue here goes beyond this extremely sad case of pedophilia. Paterno's sins (as I mentioned on like page 1 of this thread) extend beyond this case. The NCAA and the emphasis placed on college sports programs in this country is the real culprit. Paterno was just another boneheaded enabler. Sports under the guise of academia continues to turn out bad people behaving badly, and nobody gives a shit. An additional travesty is that these athletes are paid for their god-given talents (they attend universities for FREE plus perks), and people like me will have to cough up $40,000 per year minimum to send their children with god-given INTELLIGENCE to these same schools. Will someone please stop the insanity??? Are there no scholarship pathways for academically focused children? Or are the numbers weighted in favour of the sports minded? Perhaps the academically minded kids are better supported in the earlier years of education at the elite schools - so those that might show ability at poorer schools don't get through. Whereas kids with sports based abilities are often singled out earlier based on the physical attributes they 'god-given' possess, because they can be mentored and trained, and make money and prestige for more people. It is somewhat like that in Australia because we are a sport-centric nation. Our elite sports people hold the highest public imagination and focus here in ways that movie stars and entertainment celebrities do elsewhere. If you think this is bad in the States you aint seen nothin till you've seen it here. And yes - most of our potentially elite sports people are siloed off into the best and most expensive schools, followed by State sponsored academies (literally sports universities). No potential stone is left unturned in the search and patronage of 'elite sportspeople'. I would think 'pound for pound' we would make the US pale in comparison. Although pedophilia has not been an outcome of this (like it exists in our Religious domains). the mentality of 'sportspeople' is regularly shown to be lamentable at best. Though it will probably get better in the future hopefully. -
Zappa was into Johnny Guitar Watson and the music concrete thing as far as I know. I doubt he would have had much awareness at all of radical Black Music as early as then. If ever. And he continued to remain on the 'fusion' side of things when it came to all things improvised. Ian Underwood's quirky avant garde malapropisms not withstanding. Sounds like the meeting may have been a desire from the publicist to bring her two worlds together and score some brownie points.

Obviously not a Romantic of the schmaltzy kind. And don't have a 'thing' for Andy McDowell like I do (did) -
I disagree. There is a harder funk (for want of a better term) influence on some of these sessions that isn't there on the earlier recordings of some CTI artists on other labels. Benson's presence on many of these albums contributes to this. Some of the Johnny Hammond Smith and Benson's Beyond The Blue Horizon have this quality as well. A lot of these albums document the transition from 'grease to funk' and are more than worthy albums. Later on - badly conceived 'productions' like Grant Green's Kudo's album fit your flippant description, but far from all.

Sandusky currently on suicide watch. Probably won't do it. Then again Peter Roebuck jumped to his death. But that was during his actual impending arrest, and was possibly a combination of opportunity (being in a top floor room with a balcony) and what he knew was to follow. Rather than self awareness. -

He always gets the girl. And they always get the money. But in a way that lets them know it was never about the money. Kind of a consolation prize for the good guy. I have enjoyed some of the 'straight' roles of Sandler and Jim Carey though. Loved Man In The Moon and Punch Drunk Love when I saw them, at the time. I didn't know anything about Andy Kaufman until after seeing that movie. -

That looks a bit Blue-Violet to me. Must be my screen. Been listening to 'Sugar' lately. I enjoy hearing the repertoire and style of music that would have fitted well on early to mid 60's Blue Note and Prestige played in the CTI era. I know others don't. Think it adds a bit of early Seventies urban hard-edge to the presentation.

$4.50. And 7 years.... Obviously a life devoted to Jazz guitar will prematurely age you. That's an inverse benefit I bet you never anticipated back in the day -
No. He may not have been a racist, I don't know. But the story Chuck Nessa relates jibes to the sanctimonious and mean spirited vibe I have always got a whiff of from his 'lyrical satire'. I appreciate in many ways, musically and as a social observer/critic, he was an intelligent thinker, but it always came across to me as a belligerent intelligence. If he never challenged himself about his homophobia, he probably wasn't that smart anyway. And there are also disturbing allegations relating to ongoing employment of molesters in his band, despite some awareness of their behaviour. Shades of the other thread perhaps. Sorry Zappa fans. I still love his balls out Rock guitar playing though.

This was my introduction to the Lifetime sound. Back in the mid-80's. I used to love listening to 'Big Nick" Typical that they left Larry Young off the cover 14. Lifetime featuring John McLaughlin, Jack Bruce, Tony Williams and Larry Young (Polydor Special 2482 179) 1975 Side 1: One Word/A Famous Blues/Vashkar/Emergency Side 2: Two Worlds/Spectrum/Big Nick/Vuelta Abajo This compilation probably did less favours for the sound than the original Verve vinyl But I didn't know nor care then. It was all about the music -

Exactly. And he will rot away and die. Eventually. "But a convict’s crime plays only a small role in his social status and safety. Most jailhouse assaults happen because the victim violated prison norms, not because of the crime he committed on the outside. Those who steal tobacco, disrespect the members of an opposing gang, or snitch are in for a much rougher ride than the average molester". -
