  1. Wherever he is, hope he is doing well. A handful somewhat obscure releases which show off his talents quite nicely.
  2. Love SF SORROW, and it always struck me as proto-Goth. Fave track = "Trust" PARACHUTE is the ABBEY ROAD the Stones never recorded. Their embrace (?) of punk/post-punk, CROSS TALK, is surprisingly convincing. Oh, and the whole ELECTRIC BANANA saga... https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/the-electric-banana-the-complete-de-wolfe-sessions-3cd-boxset/
  3. Lee and Lockjaw [!]
  4. Will have to look for that. Riley has clearly listened to a lot of tenor players, and distilled much. But I do find his sound closer to Lucky Thompson's than about any other tenor I can think of.
  5. Superb. IMO, Riley is one of the most interesting musicians working "in the tradition" right now.
  6. Yep! My favorite description of EC... "Not that Elvis; more like Buddy Holly after downing a can of STP."
  7. Zappa also advised us to kill ugly radio. Prescient, but not in the way he probably intended.

  9. Learned yesterday that this 1977 publication was recently reprinted by Blank Forms. Learn more here: https://blankforms.org/publications/ and here: https://www.musicandliterature.org/reviews/2020/2/2/joseph-jarmans-black-case-volume-1-amp-ii-return-from-exhile. Just ordered my copy and will report back once I have it in hand.

Say more about that, please! His work with Cannonball, right?

Well, I don't intend t throw shade. I'm merely observing that, if "the Sidewinder" is the template for many (if not all) subsequent BN boogaloo tracks, then Billy's approach to the beat is — springy, but still shuffling — is an essential part of what makes it a template at all.

Surely we've discussed this before, but, revisiting Billy Higgins' BN discography, it seems more apparent to me than ever before that there would be no BN boogaloo sound without him.

Well, there's also that first EASTERN REBELLION album, the Steeplechase live dates with Bob Berg, and that Delos record with the largish horn section...
  14. On the subject of Wayne... late in the BN game but, IMO, one of his best "solos" (I mean, the entire performance is pretty much a Wayne solo).
  15. Jenkins' best playing on record, IMO.
  16. Thanks! Not much officially documented Konitz from this period, which makes me wonder why this one remains so obscure (the rarity question aside).
  17. While we're doing detective work... WTF is this? Originally slated for release on Impulse? https://www.discogs.com/G%C3%A9rald-Merceron-The-Lee-Konitz-Quartet-Martial-SolalDaring-Jazz-Quartet-Modern-Jazz-Compositions-Fr/release/5159822
