I know that the board members here have broad music interests that run the spectrum so I was looking for recommendations on CDs featuring American roots music from the 78 era of recording, i.e. pre-war recordings from the 20's and 30's. By roots music I'm thinking of almost anything from that era that could encompass country, blues, folk, gospel, cajun, zydeco, string bands, etc., etc.. I'd probably prefer compilations of various artists over a single group or an individuals recording(s) unless the latter is particularly compelling. I've been drawn to this kind of music lately and would like to explore it further. What are some "can't miss" recommendations?

After Bluesbreakers, you might want to get the expanded reissue of A Hard Road--it's even better than Bluesbreakers (in my opinion). Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to check it out. I see that it features Mayall with Peter Green so I have few doubts that I'd probably like it. I've really enjoyed Peter Green's version of Fleetwood Mac in the Complete Blue Horizon Sessions box set I purchased recently.

Jackie McLean fan? Too good to be true bargain?
mikelz777 replied to mikelz777's topic in Recommendations
Yes, 12 discs worth. Four Five and Six, Presenting Jackie McLean, Lights Out!, Jackie's Pal, McLean's Scene, Bird Feathers, Jackie McLean & Co., Alto Madness, Strange Blues, A Long Drink Of The Blues, Makin' The Changes and Jackie McLean Plays Fat Jazz. I see that since the initial post the shipping time has changed to 4 to 7 weeks. Doesn't sound too promising but I could be wrong. -
Complete 1955-1957 Quartet Quintet Sextet Sessions [bOX SET] This is a 6-CD set currently listed for $18.99 at Amazon as of this writing. (see the link below) It indicates shipping within 1 to 3 weeks but if they actually fulfill the order at this price, it's well worth the wait. Why would this be selling so cheap? I thought I got a good deal when I paid $48.00 for mine. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-1955-1957-Q...9452&sr=8-2

A handful from the Keepnews collection: I didn't realize until after I bought them that I already owned the Evans CD. Looks like I'm buying too many, I can't even keep up. Gotta quit or my wife is going to skin me alive!

Some more miscellaneous buys from BMG freebies, B&N coupon and other internet finds: My first Keith Jarrett via a BMG freebie. I thought I'd get a taste of Jarrett and see what all the fuss is about. Just got this and have to say that this is excellent. If you're into electric blues/rock you should check this out. Early Cannonball and Nat. You've probably seen his artwork but have you heard his music? Interesting and very entertaining stuff. I found a good price on this one. Hope the seller doesn't burn me.

I'm overbuying yet again. These are in the pipeline from the Concord sale:

I am so weak!! I caved to the sale and picked up this group of discs that I shouldn't be buying.

I ended up going to two different stores hoping for some kind of interesting find. The difference between stock in their jazz and box set sections was remarkable. Unfortunately, the store that is farther away from me has a much better selection. The one closest and most convenient has always had a really lame jazz section. I would usually just sit at their listening stations and listen to samples and read the AMG reviews on CDs I found interesting. I couldn't find any jazz worth picking up but I did get the remastered edition of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton.

We now have the entire 5 seasons of Quantum Leap. It was always a favorite of my wife's and then she got me hooked on it when it was still in re-runs on TV. Now my two daughters are enjoying it as well so it's nice to catch up on these as a family.

Fleetwood Mac - Complete Blue Horizon Sessions 1967-1969 I combined my 10% member discount with a 20% coupon code for Barnes & Noble online to get a pretty nice deal on this 6-CD set. This version of Fleetwood Mac has nothing to do with the pop/rock most people are familiar with. (Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham weren't yet part of the group.) This is edgy blues lead primarily by Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on drums and bass. I was in the record store the other day as they were playing some Cream and I got a yearning for some British blues.

Twilight Zone (1958-1964 original series)

I'm in no big hurry. I wish I waited on some of the earlier season sets I bought, I would have saved myself a significant amount of money. I just bought season 5 for $32 sealed/delivered but paid over twice that for season 1, 2-3 years ago. -

SciFi channel runs Twilight Zone at least once a week during the day, and I've noticed that the hour long episodes have been included. Maybe you can check the schedule and set up your TiVO or VCR. I've always felt that the hour long episodes don't work like the shorter ones but I certainly haven't seen all of them. I'll have to check that out and see if I can catch a few of the episodes in the hour-long format. I've never seen one and never saw them run on TV before. -

I've got the complete set, but I don't know offhand which would be season 4. I could check the discs, but it would help if you could tell me which was the last episode of season 3, and I could go from there. I've seen many of them, but not all. These were the hour-long episodes that made up the 4th season. I have the Definitive Editions of the other 4 seasons (1,2,3,5) but was trying to weigh whether it was worth picking up the "deviant format" 4th season. I see the set can be had for around $35.00 but would prefer to get it for its watchability and quality rather than out of a desire for completeness. #1 In His Image A science enthusiast creates a perfect mechanical man, one who compensates for his own shortcomings. Starring George Grizzard, Gail Kobe, Katherine Squire, Wallace Rooney. #2 The Thirty-Fathom Grave A man is haunted by the sounds from a submarine that sank 20 years ago. Stars Mike Kellin, Simon Oakland, David Sheiner, John Considine, Bill Bixby. #3 Valley of the Shadow A reporter discovers the secret of a small village but can he escape it? Stars Ed Nelson, Natalie Trundy, David Opatoshu, James Doohan. #4 He's Alive A young hatemonger is inspired by the ghost of Adolf Hitler. Stars Ann Jillian, Frank Overton, Barbara Baxley. #6 Death Ship An astronaut refuses to admit that he and his crew may be dead. Twilight Zone (1958-1964 original series)
mikelz777 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Is anyone here familiar with the episodes in season 4 when the series went to hour-long shows before going back to half-hour episodes for the 5th and final season? By the time I ever saw this show on TV it was already in syndication and I think they only ever showed the half-hour episodes. I've never seen any of the hour-long episodes. I have the DVD sets for seasons 1, 2, 3 and 5 (the definitive editions) and was wondering if season 4 was worth picking up. -

Hey Aggie, I think you're probably going to really enjoy that Steely Dan set. I bought it years ago and was basically only familiar with their greatest hits and/or what I heard of them on the radio at the time so most of the set was new to me. What an eye opener that was! Usually there is so much fluff and filler that I was hoping to enjoy 1/2 or 3/4 of the discs but I loved them all. The Steely Dan box set is a sure winner!
