You and I both. How 'bout some group therapy? But wouldn't that leave me with less money to spend on jazz CDs? -

You and I both. (I just joined BMG mainly to pick up a bunch of ECMs that looked interesting.) Just looking at your list already has me regretting I didn't order that Cannonball Adderley Lighthouse date. -

This one was a weekend only sale. They were going fast with around 250 titles disappearing from Saturday to Sunday. I had a couple I wanted disappear in a couple of hours from the first time I checked their listings and then trying to place an order later. I looked over their inventory again last night and felt compelled to pick up a few more. Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds Yusef Lateef - The Golden Flute Harold Land - West Coast Blues! Phil Woods/Gene Quill - Phil & Quill With Prestige Steve Allen - Steve Allen Plays Jazz Tonight -
Interesting article, thanks for posting. Groucho is an interesting man and had an interesting life as did all the Marx Brothers. (Read Harpo Speaks! some time. ) I've read several bios on Groucho and wasn't aware of his passion for the guitar.

These sales are killing me! Of course I couldn't resist! My order: Sonny Criss - Portrait Of Sonny Criss Sonny Criss - This Is Criss Roy Haynes - Just Us Oliver Nelson/King Curtis/Jimmy Forrest - Soul Battle Sonny Stitt/Bud Powell/J.J. Johnson - Stitt/Powell/Johnson Eric Kloss - About Time -
i only know the first four of them, but imho the third art of the trio disc is by far the best ("Songs" featuring a great version of Nick Drake's River Man) Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out if vol. 1 works out for me. Unfortunately, vol. 1 is the only one offered by BMG so I'd have to check for it elsewhere.

It is with considerable shame and embarrassment that I've once again fallen prey to my weaknesses and succumbed to the alluring siren song of the BMG Music Service. This time I saw it as a great opportunity to pick up some interesting ECM titles. I had hoped to pick up the Baby Face Willette CD as well but it disappeared on me before I could join and order. I'd appreciate any feedback on these titles from anyone who is willing. All of these artists would be new to me except Brahem and Charlap. My first seven "free" CD picks were: Enrico Rava - Tati Enrico Rava - The Words And The Days ===== Anouar Brahem - Thimar Jan Garbarek - Ragas And Sagas ===== Dino Saluzzi - Ojos Negros (I'm taking the chance that it won't be a dud for me.) Bill Charlap Trio - Live AT The Village Vanguard Brad Mehldau - Art Of The Trio Vol. 1 =====

I couldn't find it listed anywhere at any of the stateside internet stores I usually check out. When I Googled the CD it looked like all of the listings were from overseas. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. I wonder if it will eventually become available among the many ECM listings on BMG Music Service/Yourmusic.com?

When is this going to be released? It would probably go to the top of my wish list.

The "nice price" is over. Best Buy now has it selling for $44.99. A lot of us got quite a deal!

Erik, did they have any more copies? As of this post, Newbury Comics is selling it via Amazon Marketplace for $49.99 new. Amazon Marketplace link

Elliott Yamin - American Idol's 2006 3rd place finisher. I wouldn't have purchased this for myself but I got it as a Christmas gift and I'm diggin' it. No regrets here, it's a keeper.

You're not alone. Johnny Cash, George Jones, Jim Reeves, The Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe, some Ricky Skaggs.... (Though I'm not apologizing.)

Are all or most of the various Hat offerings avant-garde and free jazz type stuff or are there some more mainstream things sprinkled in there?
-
I received a prompt reply to my email yesterday. They apologized for their error and indicated they would be sending me the Mance CD that same day. They also said that I should consider the "Pure Getz" (hybrid SACD) a late Christmas present! Pretty cool! Thanks Concord! I don't suppose I can count on another happy mistake on my pending 7 disc order?

I myself found the posts to be very revealing. It didn't look like the topic had yet run it's course but I fear that it probably wouldn't have been a fruitful one had it been continued. As for me, "Mike somebody from MN", my name is actually Scott but I go by Mikelz777 because 10+ years ago when I finally got on the internet I had this unfounded fear of putting my name out into the cyberworld and adopted an internet name made up of a spin on my middle name and last initial (Michael S.) + "777" which has significance to me that I won't go into just now. I just never bothered changing it. There's no need to put me on your "suspect" list. If you ever came to know me you'd find me pretty harmless. As far as the topic goes, OP was one of my gateway artists into jazz with "Night Train" and "Lester Young With The Oscar Peterson Trio". The only other OP CD I have is the one with Clark Terry. Over the years I've come to kind of sit on the fence with him. I think his playing is brilliant but he doesn't really strike the chord in me that makes me want to seek out any more of his recordings. It's never been a matter of disliking things I've heard of his, it's just not risen above "gotta have this" for me. I think he can comp with the best of them and I've loved him in every sideman role I've heard him in (of which I have several). The love him and relative indifference toward him balances out to a positive-neutral position for me. Still, I'm sorry to see him go. He's of an era where there aren't many left.

What does a jazz lover do with Christmas money? Buy jazz CDs! These were my final purchases for the old year which will help me ring in the new year. I'm hoping the embarrasing amount I've been spending on CDs the last couple of months will help me resolve to lay off purchasing for a while. I've been eyeing this one for quite a while and look forward to hearing some great stuff on this box set. Fleshing out my Horace Silver collection. A lot of you would probably wonder how I could already own 9 Horace Silver CDs and not have either of these titles yet. The following were ordered from the Concord sale. I'm hoping there are no order fulfillment problems since I heard that some of the sale titles have started to disappear. According to the Concord site, the 2nd CD shown here is by "Howard" Land. I'm really hoping I get this King Curtis CD. It's a 2-fer that brings together THE NEW SCENE OF KING CURTIS and SOUL MEETING, both done for Prestige in 1960. King Curtis (ts), Nat Adderley (cornet), Wynton Kelly (p), Paul Chambers/Sam Jones (b), and Oliver Jackson/Belton Evans (d). The song samples I heard sounded great!

The Village People with my girlfriend in the latter half of the 70's. -
so what are the reservations about this set? JB One of the reservations is that the CDs in this box set are as they were originally released. Since then, these same CDs have been re-released and several have added bonus tracks and alternate takes and all the titles in the box are still readily available. Many people look at it as, "Why settle for less when you can have more?" and "Why re-package and sell what's still readily available?" (in what they often see as a better form)

Here are the lyrics as performed in the episode. Is it very likely that this was an original song written for the show? I don't know. This had a real traditional gospel/blues sound to it. When you're feelin' down And there's trouble all around ya When it seems like nothin's gonna turn out right When you just can't see any silver linin' Put your hands together and just hold on tight He'll be there when you need some comfort He'll be there when you need a friend He'll be there when the darkness is closing all around ya (2x) But you gotta believe when you get down on your knees He'll be there to make the sun shine again He'll be there to make the sun shine again
