  1. We probably won't hear anything for a while given that they said they ship in 1-2 weeks. Right now I'd say no contact is good news.
  2. They did the same thing with one of the listings for Bill Evans' Complete Riverside Recordings. Rather than shooting the art work for the outer box or sleeve, they shot the cover art for the first of the three 4-CD jewel cases. It's still the 12-CD set even though they only show the art work for one of the cases in the set. I'd rely more on the product description and the song-sample listing than I would the picture.
  3. I'm one of those "weirdos" who doesn't even own a single Monk CD. I guess I never really "got" him so I never pursued any of his recordings. At about $24.00 USD delivered, this is a deal too good to pass up. If it pans out, I'll have ample opportunity to explore a lot of Monk to see what all the fuss is about. Let's keep our fingers crossed! (Amazon.UK got me the Count Basie Clef/Verve Mosaic for less than half price so I'm hopeful!) What are your thoughts on the content for a Monk neophyte? Thanks for the tip Mr. Ayers!
  4. Bud Shank Pacific Jazz Studio Sessions.
  5. I've seen this set drop in price lately so I thought I'd better grab one now before they disappear or before they are only available at a higher price. While listening to Billie Holiday, I got turned on again by Teddy Wilson's playing and picked this set up.
  6. Billie Holiday on the Membran/Documents label-discs 1 through 4 so far. This is my 3rd set from Membran/Documents (the others being It's Louis Armstrong and Begin The Beguine [Artie Shaw]) and it's excellent. You get 10 discs in sturdy cardboard sleeves contained in a sturdy box that takes up the space of about 3 regular CDs. I'm very happy with the sound and it's not weighed down by a bunch of alternate takes. It contains 187 songs which I think cover all of her Columbia master takes along with a large portion of her Decca and Commodore releases. The only down side I would mention is that it's a bare bones package. There's no booklet or listing of personnel-you just get the song titles. For me, that was a minor quibble because this set was an absolute steal for a brand new/sealed set at less than $13.00 delivered. Given the fair amount of Billie I already have, I probably wouldn't have picked this material up at significantly higher prices so it was pretty much a no-brainer.
  7. Thank you much. I've been feeling a bit of the BMG twinge again. I'll have to see what's available in the catalog since last being a member.
  8. The last time I was a member, the shipping charge per item was $2.79. Are shipping charges the same or have they gone up?
  9. Why don't they discount the sets AND offer free shipping? The shipping cost isn't what stops me from buying any more sets. I suppose it's good if you had planned on buying soon anyway.
  10. I (a Minnesota native) interviewed the woman who would become my future wife (a native of Long Island, New York) for a job as an assistant hospitality manager at a dude ranch in Bandera, Texas of all places. I knew there was something uniquely special about her as soon as I met her which only grew stronger over time. At one point I was totally crushed when I (hopefully) covertly was feeling out her situation and possible feelings toward me only to find out that she hoped to eventually be reconciled with her old boyfriend and get married. That attempt apparently was not to be and we married about 4 years later in Pennsylvania and settled for good in Minnesota about a year after that. It all happened where and when I least expected it. We've been married 17 years.
  11. There's no way I should be picking up more CDs right now but it comes down to buying now and saving or waiting and paying more later. I kept my picks to a reasonable four: Astrakan Cafe-Anouar Brahem Le Voyage de Sahar-Anouar Brahem Conte de L'incroyable Amour-Anouar Brahem Lontano-Tomasz Stanko Quartet
  12. $9.97 jazz titles on Amazon If the above link should fail for any reason: - click on "music" under Amazon's product categories -in the left column under genre click on "jazz" -in the left hand column under browse by price click on $9.97
  13. Thus my notation "a lot of" as opposed to "all".
  14. I don't know for how long but as of this writing, Amazon is selling a lot of ECM titles for $9.97. It's a pretty nice deal if you are buying 3 or more CDs to qualify for the free shipping.
  15. I like the price, I wish I liked the music. A bit too far out for these ears.
  16. This title has been re-listed on Ebay. Those of you still looking have a chance at getting one for a nice price.
  17. Fairly high prices? I got this one from Newbury Comics via ebay for less than two bucks! Good for you. That's why I pointed out the current auction at Ebay. If you'd have looked around at other sites it's going for $20.00+ if they have it at all.
  18. seconded, the only Kynard i know and i like it a lot... how does the Legends of Acid Jazz twofer compare? I only know the Legends Of Acid Jazz Kynard CD by the sound samples on Amazon. Of the two, I think prefer The Soul Brotherhood but I may eventually pick up the other.
  19. Unfortunately, my family doesn't like jazz. My 11 and 13 year old don't have a choice, they have to listen to my jazz when I listen to it. They'll grudgingly admit that a lot of what I play isn't bad but they wouldn't choose to listen to it. My wife hates anything jazz unless it's a nice, melodic piano-based jazz trio. I have to listen to most of my jazz on headphones or while I'm alone or only with my daughters.
  20. It's definitely an addiction and I've tried to quit or reign in several times and I've been unsuccessful. Realistically, is there ever going to be a point when you own what you want to hear and not find something new or interesting? It's never ending. Right now, I'm at a pretty good point. I own about 500 titles which translates to 600+ actual discs when you count in the box sets and multi-disc sets. It's big enough that there's a lot of variety and lots of choices to keep things fresh and new yet not so big that I can't listen to my collection in a lifetime. I know I'm not ever going to stop buying CDs but I hope that I have the strength to slow way down, revisit and get to know the collection I do have and become a lot more picky and selective in the CDs I want to buy. One thing that has been helpful to me is to put the discs I'm interested in on a wish list (Amazon for me.) and listen to the samples from time to time over the course of a month or two. After a while, I find that I can do without well over 50% of them. Anyway, cheers to those of you with 1000+ collections and still buying. I can't see myself ever reaching that level but then again, when I hit 250, I never saw myself reaching 500.
  21. An excellent soul jazz two-fer containing "The Soul Brotherhood" and "Reelin' With The Feelin'". If you can't read the cover, it has some great players on it. Fathead Newman, Grant Green, Blue Mitchell, Wilton Felder, Joe Pass, Jimmy Lewis, Mickey Roker, Carol Kaye and Phil Humphrey. As of this writing, this CD is fairly expensive all over the internet but there's one currently on auction on Ebay and the bidding's less than $5.00 right now. Grab one if you find one at a price you like, it's a wonderful set!

Grab one if you find one at a price you like, it's a wonderful set! The Jazz Brothers have been on my wish list for quite a while so I finally sprung for it. A nice taste of Chuck Mangione (on the far left) when he still played jazz and also a nice taste of Sal Nistico on both CDs. New to me as a leader. I've been in a trumpet-y mood lately.
  23. Dave Bailey Complete 1 & 2 Feet In the Gutter Sessions and the Gerry Mulligan Quadromania from two of the overseas evil empire labels.
  24. It's Louis Armstrong-Membran's (Document) 10-CD set comprised of large portions of Armstrong's Hot 5's and 7's, RCA/Victor and Decca years. It's great stuff at a great bargain!
