Did you get a notice that your order was going to be delayed until January of 2008?
-
I haven't seen anything... yet. Got my notice just now... This whole situation is strange. Now two people have reported getting cancellation notices. I got a notice today but they gave me a crumb of hope. They indicated that my order was going to be delayed and that the estimated dispatch time was going to be 12-30-07 with an estimated delivery date of 1-9-08 to 1-11-08. I don't know what to think. Since they sent me a delay notice while others got cancellation notices, should I be hopeful thinking that Amazon.UK anticipates eventually getting enough sets to fulfill some orders or is this just a delay of a probable cancellation? It's such a fantastic deal, I don't have a problem waiting 2+ months if it is eventually fulfilled. I guess I just have to hope for the best but not really plan on ever receiving it. That way, I'd be disappointed but wouldn't get all bent out of shape over it. Hope is still alive! Regrets to those whose orders were cancelled. I'm curious, when were the cancelled orders placed?

Will there be jazz fans 100 years from today?
mikelz777 replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't know, acoustic instruments seemed to have served classical music very well for hundreds of years. -
I know nothing about this character, nor do I care what his sexual orientation might be, but I trust you don't mean to equate homosexuality with fetishism, voyeurism, sadism, masochism and beasteality, etc. ?? Baiting the Christian? No, I don't equate them. All I am saying is that Dumbledore's sexuality has no bearing whatsoever on the story. (Yes, I have read all of the books.) Everyone is getting themselves into such a twist because homosexuality is such a hot button topic. Rowling is introducing the world to Dumbledore as a homosexual when it is not evident in the book nor is it even remotely necessary that he be a homosexual for the telling of the story. It wouldn't have mattered whether she introduced him as a homosexual, a fetishist, a voyeur, etc., etc. because they would all be equally unnecessary as one of Dumbledore's characteristics and none of them would have any bearing on the story. (I'm curious as to what the reaction would have been if she were to have saddled him with any sexual label other than homosexuality. ) For example, an important characteristic for Harry is that he be brave, even in the face of doubt and fear. If he did not possess this characteristic, the story line would not advance and would fail. It's a necessary part of the story that he be brave. An important characteristic of Ron and Hermione is that they be loyal friends because the story could not advance without it. It is necessary for the story that they be loyal. The story line with Dumbledore is that he became best friends with this other character. They both were very gifted and talented and eventually one chose to use his talents for good and the other for evil. They were very close friends after which they were totally seperated amidst family tragedy and until the time Dumbledore eventually attacked and defeated the other character for his evil misdeeds. Dumbledore apparently held back and hesitated on taking action over a period 5 years worth of misdeeds before ultimately acting against his best friend. It is such a small part of the story and never did I ever get the impression of any kind of sexual relationship (or desire for one) when reading that small portion of the book. While I would have to concede that him having a homosexual attraction to the other character is ONE possible explanation for Dumbledore's behavior in relation to that character (though it is not apparent in the book), the story would not collapse, stop moving or not make sense if he were anything other than a homosexual. It was not a necessary factor in the story as there were any number of other explanations that would serve as the basis for Dumbledore's (in)actions and behavior. That Rowling would introduce this little tidbit after the fact when it is not apparent in the book is incredibly disingenuous and reeks of some kind of agenda. (See Big Al's post #11)

I see now that Amazon.UK is no longer offering the set for sale at any price as of this post. Do you think we'll start seeing cancellation notices or will some of us eventually see our orders fulfilled? My fingers are still crossed.

I sold some old ones so I'm buying some new ones. Instead of stacking onto artists I already have several of, I'm adding some new blood into my collection. Duke Jordan-Flight to Jordan Kenny Drew-Undercurrent Walter Davis Jr.-Davis Cup And to round out my Jazz Brothers trilogy: (I guess I'd be stacking onto 1 CD. ) (I enjoy Sal Nistico on these.) Hey Baby! Spring Fever

Perhaps, though that is not apparent. It is more so because the author said so after the fact. He could have/would have been the same character even if he were not gay.
-
Then why are you so upset about it? Re-read the second sentence.

utterly disgusted? boy, you've got issues. I just find the whole thing intellectually dishonest. There were SO many unanswered questions to the whole series, so many things that were forced to be left to the imagination. To isolate this one character and his sexuality is not only dishonest, it's cowardly: if it was that germane to the story, why wasn't it left in the book? We already know the answer to that one: public outcry would've been furious! (Then again, there's no such thing as bad publicity, so maybe it woudn't have hurt sales) However, that's no excuse to leave it out of the book. Hey J.K., while we're at it, I'd like to know the sexual orientation of the following characters: Sirius Black (he was awfully close to James Potter, and there's no record of him having any kind of heterosexual relationship with anyone) Professor McGonigall (sp?) (she was the saddest about Professor Trelawney's leaving, and her fiercest defender) Crabbe & Goyle (they were always together) Neville Longbottom (sure he asked Ginny to the Ball, but look at his last name) Percy Weasley (repressed his sexual desires by throwing himself into his work) Of course I'm being ridiculous, and that's the point. See how silly this all is? I agree with this statement: I just don't see why this also couldn't be left to the imagination like everything else was. [edited because jazzshrink responded to his thread subtitle] Very well said Big Al and my thoughts exactly. What is it with people's obsession of having to sexualize everything even when it's totally unnecessary? This and the issue observed by Big Al is what I find utterly disgusting. Who cares what Dumbledore was sexually? It doesn't have to be homosexual. Fill in the blank-fetishist, voyeur, sadist, masochist, beastiality, etc., you name it, who cares?!? It doesn't matter to the story!! You'll note that I was referring to the politicizing/sexualizing issue as the focus of my disgust but just because it just happens to involve one of the hot button issues of the day I am automatically labeled as someone who has issues which implies that I am homophobic. I'm the one with issues? I'm not the one who manufactured that twist. Just curious jazzshrink, is it possible to disagree with you on one of your pet topics and not have an issue? I was wondering how long it would take someone to play that card and it turns out, not very long.

I'm pretty sure there's third party software that automatically lowers the price of items when any other seller undercuts you. I'm tempted to order one of the marketplace ones, but the sellers' 84 & 88% feedback is holding me back... Out of curiosity, I sent a question to the lower of the Marketplace sellers to see what kind of response I would get. I said that there were different versions of this set that have been issued and asked them if they could could give me a general description of the packaging as well as approximate dimensions. I did get a reply within 2 days but they said that they didn't have the product description and that the item was (supposedly) in the distributor's warehouse.

OK, I'll stick my chin out. I was utterly disgusted with the announcement. Dumbledore's sexuality is in no way germane to the story. It wasn't a plot point and didn't contribute to or advance the story. We have absolutely no reason for needing to know his sexuality. Why politicize it? Why sexualize it? I don't know what Rowling's motivations were but it seems pretty pathetic to use her notoriety if it was her intent to make some kind of statement.

It's notice of a delay rather than a cancellation. Hope is still alive!

Sorry. My bad. I'd been debating about wether to post a link to the site or to include a product list in the posting itself. In the end, I...blew it. Thanks Bill Barton. Also, if you are inclined to support our Andorrean friends, thre are great bargains to be found under the "Definitive" and "Jazz Factory" labels on the Berkshire site. I ordered neary $80 worth last week, and filled many gaps in the "historical record" left when I sold my vinyl several years ago. The Lester Young "Aladdin Sessions" for example ... and the Hampton Hawes Memorial, as well as June Christy transcriptions, etc. Good hunting here ... Thanks for the tip. My bank account just took a very reasonable ding for some Flip Phillips, Shelly Manne and Harry "Sweets" Edison.

In one of my daughter's junior high fund raising efforts, I volunteer to be a food taster for market studies. The school gets $9.00 for the test and I was paid $26.00 for about an hour of my time today tasting 4 different bowls of frosted shredded wheat type cereal and answering a bunch of questions about it. What better way to dispense of such quick and easy money than picking up some new jazz?

Now we're down to a 6-12 day dispatch time. Amazon.UK is messing with us!
-
I don't know how long the deal has been out there but it was reported here on the 5th. At that time, the availability indicated that it was usually dispatched in 1 to 2 weeks. (Under that time line, the earliest we'd expect to hear about it is the 12th through the 19th.) Since then, the dispatch time was changed to 6 to 11 days and then, to 4 to 6 weeks where it remains at present. The price has remained the same since the 5th. I'm guessing it's going to be some time before anyone hears anything. I'm still hopeful in that there have been no reports yet of cancelled orders or of unavailability of the product. I guess we just have to sit tight and hope for the best.
-
I see that they have changed the listing again. The low price is the same but the availability has changed to, "usually dispatched within 4 to 6 weeks." It looks like they're going to keep us hanging and guessing.

Gotta go with the Jazztet, the enjoyment will last much longer!

Joe Henderson 8CD Milestone Set For $28.99
mikelz777 replied to sidewinder's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I just got mine in the mail today! (via Ebay) I'm not a big fan of the hinged box lid but that's a very minor quibble. Right now I'm enjoying what was released on The Kicker and Tetragon. It's a pretty sweet discount considering there's only a small slice in the shrink wrap and a black marker through the bar code. I don't know the rhyme or reason these are going so cheap but I'm thankful for the great deal! Enjoy yours everyone! -
Joe Henderson 8CD Milestone Set For $28.99
mikelz777 replied to sidewinder's topic in Miscellaneous Music
If Dusty Groove happens to run out again, keep an eye out for them on Ebay. Several new sets have gone up for auction and sold at nice prices. I got one delivered for $29.99. Good luck to you all, it's a great deal! -
I totally agree. I said the same thing during the big Concord sale when it came around to the Coltrane and Evans box sets. Not everyone agreed with me but I guess it's hard for many to think of anyone but themselves when making money is involved.

I don't know if it means anything, but I noticed on the Amazon.UK listing that they changed the wording on their dispatch time from "usually dispatched within 1-2 weeks" to "usually dispatched within 6-11 days."
