  1. Well, you guys should do what the hell you want, and this is just my opinion, but... I don't understand the need to classify a thread or forum just for RVG-Edition Album of the Month, Week, or Decade. By doing that it seems you are giving too much free advertising. I think you should keep RVG discussion to re-issue or general AOW forum threads. And so what if established classics are discussed in AOW? They are not quite 'old friends' to all of us, especially newbies. And it's possible that new things can learned even if you've heard an album a 100 times, especially if someone gives a well written essay on their impressions. And who knows what stories or experiences can spawn from such threads. Different or better sound can change perspective too. If you don't like what's being discussed, ignore the thread. Most of the AOWs, as a relative newbie, don't interest me that much to be honest.
  2. I actually listened to the entire CD again, it seems like it's through the entire CD as well. What I meant to say is: I know atleast the title track and POSSIBLY other tracks. Sorry about that - this strangely unclear sound seems to be an exception, so I wouldn't worry too much. None of the other 11 Silvers or other BNs I have are really like this, to my memory atleast. In the case of the title track for 'SFMF', it's possible that the tapes were used too much since the song was/is so popular, but I don't really know for sure. Maybe you could try asking a mastering pro who deals with old tapes.
  3. "Jody Grind" domestic CD too. I know atleast the title track has 'crackly' sound.
  4. If you have to do a Hancock JTC, maybe 'Thrust'?
  5. Yes, the quality of the mastering is most important, but early digital masterings could sound harsh and edgy, which makes it even more of tragedy that alot of recent jazz re-issues seem so compressed and manipulated.
  6. Isn't there a difference between evolution & just change? 'My bad' if there isn't.
  7. I like the ones without the damn cat or the 'poof' better.
  8. Just wanted to add that this message board is one the most civil I've ever seen or participated in, even compared to other Jazz message boards. It's almost TOO nice. I come here mainly to listen and learn, though. This place is almost like an alternate universe compared to some of the message boards I've seen. Ok, Continue...
  9. For anyone who dosen't want to read the link, a person supposedly from Croatia(?) says his "Sidewinder" is copy-protected. He dosen't say where he bought it from or when. Interesting how he says: '....Confusing is that I have these clicks just on those 3 CDs which are new re-releases, released in 2003 on Verve, who really care about good recordings....' A single source & maybe not the most reliable source, but prompted my original question. I don't want this copy-protected BS coming to the US either.
  10. Stumbled upon this: http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread....?threadid=50036
  11. Back to Star Wars, I had a really lame one with Wicket (one of the little furry guys from ROTJ). My mom recently found it and asked if I still wanted it - it's kind of beaten up with scratches though. Could it be worth anything? Can I put up in the sale forum?
  12. Alldirect - my recent last few month's experience with buying and browsing from: they don't seem to stock new releases or new re-issues of jazz, but have close to the best prices and a decent stock of already released stuff; good service in my experience too. Hope that helps. edit: for typo
  13. This is why I'm sick of reporters sticking microphones up players (of all sports) noses all the time, whether at press conferences or locker rooms. The players seem to be talking off the top of their heads alot of the time but don't really care what they are saying alot of the time. In most instances I hear, the reporter wants any comment, after asking a general or inane question, and dosen't really care what the player is saying either, in my estimation. It gets boring, not funny, if you hear or read comments like these all the time, even though I can talk like an idiot too.
  14. That was the worst I've ever seen the Giants play over 5 games this year other than that East Coast road trip around the time of the Backout. and I've followed them the entire year. Possibly contrary to the national media, pitching & defense were actually their biggest strengths, Bonds was not the entire team, as they were second only to the dodgers in ERA and second only to the Marlins in errors commited in the NL. Hitting with runners in scoring position had always been a liability (especially the first half of the season), but they were much better at the end of the regular season scoring runs. Alfonso was just continuing his hot bat from the second half of the season, he was horrible at the plate the first half. And they had an amazing record in one run games. But they set a record in game 3 for most runners left on base, too many hitters went cold, and they commited way too many costly errors over the series (Cruz should actually be Gold Glove contender but he was a nightmare this series), and their pitching was inconsistant over the series compared to the rest of the season. Pudge and Beckett were the real deal during this series though.
  15. Noise Reduction = No Free Lunch. You're not just reducing the noise but eliminating part of the recording. Schaap made the right choice.
  16. About 32. Most of them are the first time I heard these albums in any incarnation. But I don't how Blue Note can call these 'audiophile releases'. I certainly didn't think that was the main purpose of them. Compared to the MoFi versions of BNs I own like 'Something Else' or 'Night in Tunisia' they are not in same league. 24 bit or 2bit, compressed sound is a no no if you are going for an audiophile market.
  17. Yes, clean dynamic range is becoming obsolete.
  18. Yes, 'Blues and the Abstract Truth' is one of the better Van Gelder recordings. But I have to give the edge to 'Empyrean Isles' as the top Rudy recording I've heard, the sound is just explosive and it's one of my all time favorite performances. Some others with the combination of performance and sound in mind: 'ESP' 'Soul Station' 'Speak No Evil' 'Etcetera' 'Clifford Brown & Max Roach' 'Coltrane at the Village Vanguard Again' 'Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall'
  19. Hmm, I'll listen more carefully to recent McMaster jobs and I see If I notice a clearer trend towards louder masterings. Sorry to bring up a dead horse, missed the fun at the BN BB apparently.
  20. While I think it's great that BN is re-issuing classic BN titles at a budget price, and I plan on getting titles that I don't already have, I have some issues with the sound of the RVGs. Even though in general they sound 'fast', have a forward presence, with great front to back depth, and full tonality, I've noticed that they seem to be remastered at a loud level and therefore transient peaks seem to be quished. Also, the highs seem to be rolled off leading to a slightly grey color to the sound -trumpet high notes and cymbals most effected. I'm not talking about the upper midrange where you can associate brightness with. My basis of camparison is not so much original LP issues or even first generation BN Cds, but more recent BN Conns and regular CD re-issues(1997+), 1995+ Impulse CDs, and OJCs recorded at Rudys. A good example is to listen to the Empyrean Isles RVG and then compare to the Hancock boxset. Tony Williams louder moments seem to be flatened more on the RVG and Freddie Hubbard's trumpet is missing some sparkle in the higher notes. Even though the RVG has a greater sense of depth and lacks noise reduction, and has a fuller tonality, and may sound faster, I prefer the boxset version - cleaner dynamic headroom is much more important. Just recently, I got the same impression going through Freddie Hubbard's dates a leader on Impulse re-issue CDs, Conn CDs, and RVG. I really like the re-issue of Goin' Up. So polarity aside...
  21. Actually, if you go to the Headroom website, and take a look at the graphs for frequency response (not the 'normalized' ones) you'll see that the K501 rolls off in the bass sooner. The graphs seem to roughly corespond with what I hear while comparing the 600 and 501. To be fair, there is no standard way to measure frequency response of headphones and there is no standard for what constitutes 'flat response' with heaphones (since headphones usually need to have less output in the highs relative to speakers) but the graphs are probably more objective than just comparing by ear to find frequency response differences. But yes the AKGs are great with acoustic music and the bass does sound more natural overall than the 600s IMO.
  22. New to this forum and enjoying it very much. I do most of my listening with headphones and I'm not deaf yet. The AKG 501 and Etymotic ER-4S are my main headphones right now, sometimes the Sony 7506. But I have to agree with Paul - the 501s are very neutral compared to the 580s and 600s. The only downsides are the 501 are rolled off in the low bass and are significantly less sensitive (they require more power to achieve the same volume). As far as headamps go, crossfeed should be a major consideration. A crossfeed filter sends one channel into the other and vice versa in order to create a more speaker-like experience and decrease listener fatigue. I had a Meier Corda amp and the major benefit was the crossfeed filter, mostly with older recordings that had a wide stereo spread. Also had a Musical Fidleity X-Can for a while before that and it worked fine as well, sans the crossfeed. I tried tube-rolling the X-Can - different tubes colored the sound in different ways but I found the stock tubes to be most favorable.
