  1. http://www.svd.se/nyheter/inrikes/artikel_1368291.svd Here's a google translation One of Sweden's foremost jazz musician, pianist Esbjörn Svensson, is dead. He died after Saturday's diving accidents at Stockholm in the Stockholm archipelago. Pianist and jazz music Esbjörn Svensson died late yesterday after dykolyckan in Stockholm in Värmdö, south of Stockholm. He was 44 years old. Esbjörn Svensson leaves a wife and two children. -- I feel a terrible sadness. It is a great loss of a very close friend. Esbjörn was always happy and forward. He was extremely creative and always good to have and deal with. I have always loved to work with him, "said Dragana Maksimovic, longstanding friend and co-workers, to SvD.se. She was told early this morning that Esbjörn Svensson dödförklarats shortly before midnight on Saturday at the Karolinska University Hospital. -- I think this is as big a loss to American music that when (jazzpianisten) Jan Johansson passed away in a car accident. I look Esbjörn as the largest musical talent and the composer as Sweden has had. Burkhard Hopper is the group's manager in Germany. In a press release on Sunday, he writes: "Esbjörn Svensson was the finest man I met. Ödmjuk and respectful - he was shining up the world and his music inspired people in all corners of the earth, "according to Hopper. It was last Saturday that Esbjörn Svensson made a dive at the Björkviks bridge, together with a group and a dykledare. When the group returned to the surface was discovered that a diver was missing. Esbjörn Svensson was found seriously injured on the bottom and were held with ambulanshelikopter to Karolinska. But late on Saturday evenings was thus made clear that his life could not be salvaged. The police have informed the Esbjörn Svenssons next of kin. Investigators are now awaiting a forensic examination and will investigate diving and examine witnesses on the accident. Esbjörn Svensson was one of Sweden's foremost jazz musician and has also made itself a name internationally with the group Esbjörn Svenssons trio, EST, consisting of drummer Magnus Öström and basisten Dan Berglund. Both discs that the concerts have become columnists favorites. The band has found a large audience not only in Sweden but also in Germany, France and the United States. Esbjörn Svensson grew up in the village of Skultuna outside Västerås and was childhood friend with bandkollegan Magnus Öström. On the band's website says Esbjörn Svensson that he began playing the piano because they had no other instruments at home. But the musical påbråt was there from others in the family. In fact, he wanted to play drums, but when it was shown that the Magnus Öström chosen drums Esbjörn decided to go for the piano. The two began playing together and Esbjörn has declared that since they had no teachers developed their music into something very special and personal. In the 1980s, the duo was sought after by young promising backup at both the Swedish and Danish jazz. They formed the band 1990, but it was not until three years later they met with Dan Berglund and became Esbjörn Svenssons Trio. The same year was released debutskivan When everyone has gone. Since then, it has become ten discs of which the latest, Live in Hamburg, was released in november 2007. It is largely based on material from the last studioplattan, Tuesday Wonderland. That it became a disc of the concert in Hamburg was not planned. Esbjörn Svensson told the newspaper Dig Jazz to the band was extraordinary tagged to do a really good play just the evening of 22 november 2006. He also noted that it is a completely different feel and freedom to play in public and that contact with the audience makes all three of the band like to stretch out a little extra. Esbjörn Svensson was appointed in 1995 and -96 for this year's jazz musician and 1998, he won a grammis as best composer. The band has also received several grammis and also received prizes abroad. This fall, they were uppbokade on several concerts in around the world, New York, Canada around in Europe and the Stockholm Jazz Festival. Their music has in the past discs with electronic effects remained in the intersection of jazz, rock and pop, and has accused a larger crowd than the faithful jazzlyssnarna. According to the band's website is EST a popband who play jazz. And although the band has been named Esbjörn Svenssons trio sees itself as the equal bands, but the more usual division conductor and backup Swedish » English Translate
  2. Holly shit, that's horrendous news, they were supposed to come here for the jazz fest. Saw them a few times, did not buy tickets but i felt i saw them enough times in the last years. Have most of their music. Was looking to hear their next output.

  9. I would argue though that because an artist does not move you personally , it does not mean that the guy is irrelevant. Can't really say i took a lot of time to listen to Fats Waller or any people from thast era, it does not mean that their contribution is worth zilch. At a certain point, you have to separate your feelings from the impact this person had on others.
  10. AC/ DC Alice Cooper Black Sabbath Great sunday morning music
  11. It's good to be king, just for a while...
  12. Django would be the first name that comes out of my head
  13. We talked a bit about it in the dumb lyrics thread but Os Mutantes are quite a fun band to listen. The first cd i picked up was... ... and it made me look for the others
  14. It reminds me why i don't buy Mojo anymore !
  15. Weirdly, i don't have much of him at home, only have South which i have not listened to in a long time so i can't remember much about it. I saw him twice live and he was very impressive both times and you had the feeling that his formations were run as a very tight unit, drummer Dan Weiss showed also some great licks the last time i saw him this spring. I know he hangs around with a few of our local musicians among others Thom Gossage and joined in a few occasions Dan Thouin at a jam session during last year jazzfest. Never heard him with Simon, i gotta admit i've never heard of Edward Simon , so i will have to check it out. Woops just did and just looking at the company he hangs around and i definitively will have to look for it. To me Binney is a quintessential player of our era, his music has a very modern feeling to it while still having links to the past Regarding the cap, i made fun about it because with now the Expos gone, the few baseball fans remaining here are Red Sox fans
  16. Pissed off right now, the idiots running the place have made this gig almost standing room only with a few chairs on the side with an obstructed view on the stage because of all the people standing up. If you want to be near the stage , you have to stand around for about 4 hours . One hour to wait at the door, at least another hour inside before the show starts , plus of course standing around during the show. Definitely not my idea of a good time.
  17. I saw him a few times live, very fine player and has a very fine group of musician working with him, especially a certain piano player called Taborn. Only negative thing about him is that he always wears a fuckin' Yankees hat...
  18. Do they play the last matches at 8.30 pm? From now on, all the games will be played in this time slot
  19. I know that some people will bitch if Netherlands coasts it against Romania and the Romanian take advantage of it but France and Italy have nothing to blame but themselves, when you cumulate only 1 point in two games in those kind of competitions, you're asking for trouble.
  20. Tonight Sun Ra Arkestra
  21. The game at least was quite good, won't cry over the departure of Greece though. My top 5 1 Netherlands 2 Portugal 3 Spain 4 Germany 5 Croatia If you think i'm unfair to Croatia, ask yourself if your team had to play them , would you prefer to play the Germans or Croatia ? Best game Romania-Italy (Who would have thought that the italians would be in the best games of the competion so far) Honorable mention to all the games of the second meeting. Worst game Still France-Romania Best looking haircuts Italian team, they looklike guys who have passed more time at the hairdresser than on the pitch.
  22. That 's what made Brel so special, his singing character walked a very tiny tightrope between the sublime and ridiculous, try Les Bonbons where the character singing the song is quite despicable or Madeleine where the pathetism of the singer makes the song greater. Here's Madeleine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5az10P02cc Here's Les Bonbons (The candies) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P-uDKvGxYo
  23. In France we had a similar thing happening with the leader of left wing rock group Noir Désir Bernard Cantat being imprisonned for murdering in a fit of passion his girlfriend Marie Trintignant (well known actress and daughter of Jean-Louis Trintignant) The question i ask myself when those moral dilemnas occur is whether the music they have done has been "corrupted" by their actions. Was it done after they did their crime, do they glorify their actions in the music is the music a byproduct of those actions ? Overall i don't expect musicians to be role models especially in their personal life, so i actually would have no problem listening to the first two examples you gave. Actually the third case with musicians involved in working with a politically corrupted government is the one i would have a hard time still enjoying it. If it was proven that they did take advantage of their position or knowlegedly let some illegal action going on without doing the right thing or at least do everything to separate yourself from these actions.
