  2. Starting the Ellington centennial boxset. Music aside for the price they charge for that thing they could have done a better job with the cd cases and the way they go in the box
  3. For you anglophones among the best Gainsbourg related stuff. Two albums from the Bad seed member who did a fine job recreating the Gainsbourg universe and adapting his stuff in English The lovely Jane Birkin covering once again her ex but this time using Maghrebian arrangements, very powerful and very emotive. I'm still crying from the live show that i attended years ago. This lovely American did an album with mostly Gainsbourg covers. Mostly from his yé yé period the silly songs are pretty rocking in garage rock mood. By the way, in the latest Tarantino flick you will hear April March version of Laisse tomber les filles
  4. I have about everything there is to be owned in terms of CD about this guy. Love about everything he did except the stuff with the American musicians which was not great to begin with and sounds awfully dated now. Too bad that in his last years, to remain in the spotlight, he acted more as a buffoon especially on television, the i want to fuck her to a shocked Whitney Houston or when he burned a money bill, which is illegal, live on tv. The fact that he did not sold that many albums probably incited to do that stuff, the alcohol did not help either. If Melody Nelson is his chef d'oeuvre, gotta say i have a fondness for Initials B B One of the fun things to search for is the stuff he wrote for other people, of course the most famous are Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, any guy who had an intimate relation with those ladies is ok in my book by the way. Juliette Greco was an earlier recipient, La Javanaise was written for her, so was France Gall (Les sucettes) and of course Françoise Hardy among modern french stars Alain Bashung had an album writen in collaboration with Gainsbarre. I do agree that a knowledge of french is necessary to enjoy most of his stuff, however thay are still a bunch of his pieces that go beyond the understanding of the language. By the way on Tzadik there is an intriguing cd of Gainsbourg covers made by a wide range of musicians.

  8. Thank you for identifying my main point. Where we part ways is the significance of being a finalist one time at Wimbledon. Kevin Curren was a runner-up once. Cedric Pioline, too (who reached exactly two Grand Slam finals in his career and was a top Ten player despite only winning five titles over all). Someone named Chris Lewis lost to McEnroe in the 83 finals - that proves he mastered grass? Win a Slam that isn't played on clay - then I'll give him credit as something other than a clay court master. Pioline or Lewis were not very good on other surfaces and they never won big competitions in any other surface. They were good players who had a hot hand that year. You can not compare Nadal to the fellows you mentionned in terms of level Nadal has dominated what is considered one of the toughest surface to play and seems to be constantly the number two player in other surfaces only to be beaten by a not so crappy player called Federer.
  9. What i enjoyed from that series was that you always have to expect the unexpected and that is what the ending delivered. Everybody was predicting some kind of blood bath involving different characters. Nobody thought about the way it actually ended. My feeling is that the frustration from the viewers is the fact that they were expecting a closure and some kind of moral in an amoral world.
  10. I think the point that Dan is trying to make is that you have be strong on many surfaces to be considered great. And i do agree with him on that point. Where we do disagree is what kind of performance should we expect of someone to be considered good on any other surface. My feeling is that being a finalist on Wimbledon shows a strong command of that surface and you can take away the label one-dimensional at that point.

  12. Especially when the guy who beat him may be the greatest player of all time.
  13. Well, it was a controversial endind, heck i thought that the network carrying the HBO signal (The Movie Network), lost their feed. Anybody wants to comment, i sure didn't see that coming.
  14. Roy Eldridge disk 1, man he sounded great.

  16. What i enjoyed mostly from that series is instead of having etablished patterns in the way of telling stories, they always kept things fresh and you never knew what to expect story wise or how low can these characters go. And how all these people including the civilians that support them in a way or another always find a way to justify their heinous actions. To me this series is about our civilisation, on how in the name of so-called ideals, we have created a corrupted world where the ends justify the means. Mister Chase, it was quite a ride.
  17. Attended a few gigs, among them, Marc Ribot solo, that was suprisingly straight ahead stuff, no crazy suff with balloons or a fan. Rob Brown Quartet feat. William Parker, Gerald Cleaver, & Craig Taborn, Taborn was very impressive either as playing behind the leader or in his soloing. An extraordinary, duo with William Parker and Hamid Drake, Drake has to be one of the more impressive drummers in the business, and Parker at one point had such a funky groovy bass line that i almost got up and started dancing Bindu feat. Hamid Drake, Daniel Carter, Ernest Dawkins, Sabir Mateen, & Greg Ward, great blowing session by these beautiful sax players led by once againn by the amazing drummer that is Hamid Drake

  19. Found it for 400 bucks. Man it seems that all the boxsets i look for are finding their way on used CD stores. Found two weeks ago Miles Davis Prestige, the Komeda set. Lately i had to pass on a Monk Riverside boxset. And i now i find this baby.
  20. Well it was a terrific gig. He knows how to tell a story with a guitar. Tonight Rob Brown quartet with William Parker, Gerald Cleaver and Craig Taborn, should be fun.

  22. Big fan of this gentleman. From him i own the Complete Imperial sessions that made me fell him in love with his beautiful alto sax sound. In my dreams i sound exactly like him. Also acquired a few Original Jazz Classics such as Rockin' in rhythm, The beat goes on ! and This is Criss. I noticed a few 32 Jazz of him, are they worthwhile, iis there any other stuff that i could find that is worth the time and the money.
