  1. I just got back from watching Roger Clemens go 5-zip! With the batting lineup the Astros have behind Roger, I wonder if he will get 30 this year.. a very distinct possibility. When was the last time anyone got 30? Funny thing.. it was "umbrella night" at Minute Maid Park ... the roof was open and it was a cloudy but warm evening.. great baseball weather. Then at the top of the 9th it started to rain... suddenly 20,000 umbrellas were opened all over the stadium ... a nice picture.. Final thing, I go to an Astros game about once every two years. I figure that I have seen about 15 MLB games in all and the Astros have won EVERY time I have seen them. I am 15-0! Should I offer my services to the club as a "lucky charm"? Garth.
  2. As a big fan of the original Chico Hamilton Quintet with Collette and Hall, I followed all of Chico's groups after that into the sixties. I still have a strong memory of seeing the Hamilton, Lloyd, Bohanon, Gzabo, Stinson group LIVE at the Colonial Tavern on Yonge Street in Toronto in the mid 60's. Lloyd was a real trip in those days with his full threepiece suit and gold watch chain, including fob .. blowing hell out of the flute and tenor. Needless to say I was there every night of their three night gig. IMHO, the Impulse albums got sequentially weaker and more commercial as they were released ... what a pity after the enormous impact and promise of "Passin' Thru" .. which just blew me away ..
  3. Thanks for the head's up Brad .. I have seen these listed in various discographies in the past, but have never heard them. DeFranco with Powell promises to be a daunting experience. Buddy has always played "up" to his companions, (just listen to the fabulous album with Tatum, or the two albums with Dave McKenna)), and that is why it is so disappointing that he does not record with better folks today ... I will await my copies of these releases from Fantasy .. legacy of my D.J. days.. B)
  4. I loved those two ABC albums.. and would gladly kick into the pot for a CDR! His sound is very similar to that of Tony Fruscella ...
  5. Here is a picture of Elvin and me during a happier time ... this was taken at Jones Hall in Houston during the JVC Kool Jazz Festival in 1982. I still had my radio show "The Sounds of Jazz" on KUHF-FM at the time, and was invited to M.C. these touring concerts. Great fun, as I used to get the artists to come on the show. I did a interview with Elvin, and got him to comment on some of his albums, including "Dear John C" .... How I wish I had those tapes still ... the station went all classics in 1986. God! I was in that 2 year stage when I was still doing a "comb-over" ... how embarrassing! But doesn't Elvin look happy with his Texan hat!
  6. I had a "character" I used to quote on my radio show.. "Blind Crippled John Horribly" ... He was very popular with my audience...
  7. Mostly "soft drink" .. which is what I use here in Texas... I never have a problem being understood ...
  8. Gee! I thought that all American high schools were more like BLACKBOARD JUNGLE... ? My high school was an all-male institution, based upon the British public school model .... so the film which most resembles my experiences would be closer to Lindsay Anderson's IF, starring Malcolm McDowell in his first starring effort. As I am still relatively new here, I am never sure when to start a new thread as we inevitably move away from the original topic. Re: DAVID AMRAM ..... A rather amazing musician, who has operated around the fringes of jazz since he was a teenage prodigy. He basically plays French Horn, but he also plays an amazing variety of esoteric instruments. He could be called one of the true pioneers of "world music" ... Here is my feeble attempt to scan his impressive history from the Encyclopedia of Jazz, and the weird abbreviations that is used on that volume. I have met him twice, and he really is a fascinating individual .... I hope that you can read this .... Jazz Studio 6 (Ralph Burns) is also excellent. Will be a pleasure to relisten to this. I remember a beautiful composition by Burns 'Nocturne' with a very worthy clarinet solo by Dave Schildkraut. Speaking of Burns, there is a superb album recorded for Decca at around the same time 'Very Warm For Jazz' which took me years to find but was really worth the wait! Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Frank Rehak, Jimmy Cleveland, Eddie Costa and others were on that one. Garth, your 'aging' memory seems to be doing fine. However could not trace any Jazz Studio 7. A reissue of the whole series would be very welcome, indeed.
  11. DAMN!! More than half of my CDs are still in boxes, so I can't get to all of them to confirm what I "think" I remember... But there is definitely an Al Cohn "Jazz Worshop" album as well the ones we have already mentioned, and I think that there might be a Billy Byers one as well. The Hal Schaefer shown is the weakest of the lot as I recall. Combining two threads on this list.. the ideal Mosaic Box would be to have THREE series in one wonderful box ... The RCA Jazz Worshop Series (6 LPs) The Decca Jaaz Studio Series (6 LPs) The Decca Jazz Lab Series. (2 LPs). I would gladly pay real money (0r beads, whatever) for a nicely remastered box of this stuff!

It has been an item of considerable mystery as to why Decca have never reissued the entire seven volume series of "Jazz Studio" albums. There was some great music there .. two by John Graas, and others by Ralph Burns, David Amram and George Barrow, Joe Newman, and an excellent group of small group jazz combos. I have often thought that they would make an excellent Mosaic Box Set on 4 CDs. I know Jazz Studio 1 thru 6. Can't recall a Jazz Studio 7. What was that? Brownie .... I used to have them all ... in my late, lamented LP collection.. Ah Well! can't cry over spilt milk .... I could have sworn there were seven, but, you are right, I can only think of six now ... like the missing dwarf no one can remember.... Let's list them: 1. DL8058. Joe Newman, Benie Green, Frank Foster, Paul Quinichette, Hank Jones, "Sir Jonathan Gasser" (guitar), Edie Jones, Kenny Clarke. 2. DL8079. John Graas, Don Fagerquist, Milt Bernhart, Herb Geller, Jimmy Giuffre, Marty Paich, Howard Roberts, Curtis Counce, Larry Bumker. 3. DL8014. Group 1: John Graas, Don Fagerquist, Gerry Mulligan, Marty Paich, Howard Roberts, Red Michell, Larry Bunker. Group 2: Conte Candoli, John Graas, Charlie Mariano, Zoot Sims, Jimmy Giuffre, Andre Previn, Howard Roberts, Curtis Counce, Larry Bunker. 4. DL8156. The Jack Millman record discussed here 5. DL8235. Ralph Burns, Joe Newman, Billy Byers, Jim Buffington, Bill Barber, Dave Schildkraut, Herbie Mann, Danny Bank, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson. 6. DL8558. Dave Amram. George Barrow, Arthur Phipps (B), Al Harewood (dr). {This is a great album!). 7. ?????? I might have confused in my aging memory one of the Decca "Jazz Lab" albums... now THAT is a whole new ball of wax ... there were several series of albums issued under that rubric ... wanna go there?

  14. Well, knowing Joe to be the gentleman and former scholar that he is, I am sure he does not mind wandering down this serendipitous road, as long as the discussion is on jazz ... and after all this does deal with the antecendents to Miles's work with Gil Evans .... right, Joe?
  15. Sorry 'bout that misattribution Late .... I made the correction .. bad form for a supposed scholar like me!
  16. I agree that the modal "thing" was evolutionary... to follow up LATE'S comments, one also needs to listen to Gil Evans' arrangements on the Hal McKusick Jazz Workshop Album (RCA) .. especially the early version of "Blues For Pablo" ... this album has been unjustly neglected in the face of the George Russell album (which IS superior, but not by much), and deserves wider appreciation. Other compositions on this album such as Russell's "The Day John Brown Was Hanged," and "Lydian Lullaby" also point the way ... Damn! It is so good to see people rediscovering this great music again, and to be able to share my enthusiasm. I sometimes wondered if I was the only person the world who loved this stuff! Garth.
  17. OOOOPS! I inadvertently created another J.J. Johnson Box thread.. must be the lack of morning coffee (I switched to teas about four months ago) .... anyway here is my original post... As an "early adopter" of the J.J. Box, it has always surprised me that it has remained around for so long. This has always been wonderful music, but for some reason, J.J. just does not enter the consciousness of jazz fans the way that he should. One should also not overlook the sidemen on this set ... Bobby Jaspar, Hank Jones, Percy Heath, Elvin Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Wilbur Little, Paul Chambers, Max Roach, Nat Adderley, Cedar Walton, Clifford Jordan, Victor Feldman, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes, Freddie Hubbard, Albert "Tootie" Heath, Arthur Harper ..... now ... is there any other Mosiac box that can boast a lineup of jazz stars like this?? "Hello Young Lovers" and "Aquarius" are worth the price of admission all by themselves.... Garth.
  18. OOOPS! I just noticed that there was a previous J.J. Johnson Box thread.. sorry to repeat ... go there... !
