Customer Service Question-Item I've Sold
RDK replied to jazzmantom2004's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Honestly, I rarely worry about (or even look at) feedback unless it's really low. There's too much politicking involved, too many people give out positives only because they don't want to receive a retaliatory negative, and too often, as mentioned above, you get people dishing out negs for no valid reason. I don't think it's "corrupt," but I don't believe it's very useful anymore except in weeding out the *really* bad guys. I wish people left more "neutrals." If a transaction goes smoothly, with no real problems, and the money is sent and the item received in a rasonable amount of time - both parties should get neutrals. If things go wrong, negs should be handed out. To me, a buyer should get a positive if he pays right away and the seller should get one if he ships quickly, with adequate packaging, and reasonable shipping. Friendly emails are a nice touch. But the way the system now works, positives are handed out too freely, with the simple closing of a transaction whether it was a "smooth" experience or not. As for Jazzmantom, don't be too quick to think that your buyer merely copied the discs and returned them. (While he may have, I doubt that was his original intention.) That Miles box ain't rare - he probably could have copied them from friends or any library - and to do that across the Atlantic just ain't worth it. Besides, at $92 for a used set, I'd say he paid too much and instead regretted his purchase. That doesn't, of course, make it right - he should eat his error and the feedback extortion is disgusting - but quite honestly the hassle this is causing you isn't worth the twenty bucks or so. -
Reminds me when I was majoring in Astronomy back in college and girls would ask me what my sign was.

My avatar was animated Muttley, Dick Dastardly's snickering dog. But I had to remove him for a little while. I had just posted my condolences on GOM's thread and it didn't seem right to have him snickering on the side. Freaked me out...

My sincerest condolences to you and your family. -
Rarely upgrade CDs for sound reasons - only for extra material or if it's a session I really, really like. I will upgrade from LP to CD since, though I have lots of LPs, I'm really not able to listen to them often.

Not that anyone was actually holding their breath while awaiting my opinion on this one, but I've listened to this a couple of times now and can only respond with a hearty . This was far more palatable to my ears than Unit Structures (which I will have to revisit again one of these days). I'm still not sure about everything that's going on here, but as CT goes (to me) this is pretty listenable stuff. B)

What are the qualities you dislike the most?

Hey, I work in Hollywood and you just described most of the people I know! -
Hey AB, I don't disagree with you at all that there's a big difference between the Syd Barrett Floyd and what came after. And though I love Meddle and Dark Side, I'm really not that big a fan overall. What I "objected" too earlier (and "objected" is way too strong a word as I was mostly funnin') was the idea that Piper was the only "real" PF album. That's a ridiculous statement to me; like saying the "real Beatles" had Pete Best rather than Ringo.

I'm gonna celebrate Beri's Birthday by starring at his avatar for a while. I be hyp-no-tized. Congrats, dude! B)

I'll say. As much as I dislike Kenny G. - and I admit to never really hearing him except on the shopping mall Muzak and occassionally at my dad's house - I can't say that I "dislike" his music any more than *some* of the stuff I've heard by Cecil Taylor, Brontzmann, and other "legit" jazz artists. For a jazz fan to say they dislike Kenny G is like shooting fish in a barrel. If you don't consider him "jazz" in the first place, then why even bother dissing him. I have more respect for someone saying that they hate the Rolling Stones (though I'd also say they were crazy in the head...)
-
That's like saying the REAL Miles Davis only recorded one album called "The Birth of the Cool."

Anything but the drums!

I just picked this up yesterday, but have yet to hear it. I could never get into "Unit Structures" but I've heard that this is more accessible. I hope so. I keep trying CT, but there's precious little of his output that I really like. How does Taylor's version of "Conquistador" compare to Procul Harum's?
-
While I've never hot-tubbed with Ron, I've probably run into him more times than any other celeb I've run into in L.A. I've seen him at concerts, at the Tower on Sunset, at movie memorabilia shows, in an elevator, etc... For such an, uh, average guy he sure does, uh, get around...

Which Mosaics probably don’t sell too well?
RDK replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Voodoo - or at least Mosaic - economics at work! -
Thanks Lon. Yeah, I think I'm gonna order this one. I was just cross-referencing tracks on AMG between this box and the various individual disc reissues and - what a mess! Other than getting the 10-disc box - which I don't want because of how the alt. takes are placed and because I already have the JATP stuff elsewhere - these tracks are scattered all over the place. Not really anyone's "fault" because of how these were originally released on EPs and LPs, with sessions often mixed-up by Grantz, but nevertheless... The tin box seems to get about 95% of it, and it's all in one place, so...
-
Any updated opinions on this box? I was thinking of ordering it as a "freebie" through BMG. I dislike the tin, but have little of Bird's Verve stuff on CD (mostly LPs and cassettes ). Is this worth getting as opposed to, say, 3 or 4 of the individual discs?
-
Hell, 50 years from now there probably won't be any working CD players left to even play those "antiquated" round silver things. Anyone tried to retrieve data off those "old" 6" floppy discs lately?

RDK replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm not sure the bulk of their fanbase is even alive anymore... Seriously, I have the FF box and it's not bad at all - but there is an awful lot of it and I really only listen to 3 or 4 of the nine discs. -
That's it Jazzdog, I've had it with you... let's call the whole thing off!

Give me your one sentence definition of jazz.

I'd have to say that "jazz" pretty much sums up exactly what it is. -

Let's make it even harder. What's your *one word* definition of jazz? -

That's the one I always go for. I've heard it attributed to Armstrong; does anyone know exactly where it came from?
