I assume that the McMaster version is sequenced in performance order. (I don't have my copy nearby to check.) That's the way I'd prefer it in this case, though if it weren't a live recording I'd prefer it sequenced like the original albums but with the extra tracks at the end.

I'd expect that from a drummer maybe, but from an organist?

I don't usually talk about it here, but my wife is an attorney specializing in adoption and estate planning matters, mostly dealing with same-sex couples. She has a website that accepts e-mails to her, mostly for business and/or personal queries, but as you might expect she gets more than her share of "hate mail" from those who - for one reason or another - don't agree with what she does. Many are ugly and mean-spirited, some very polite even in disagreement - one woman actually sounds sweet and good-intentioned as she honestly fears for my wife's soul. Some we get a good laugh out of. She forwarded me this one earlier today. It upset her not so much for its message of hate (which is rather mild compared to some of them), but for how poorly it was drafted - and for the fact that it was sent by a university student... "How is it right to bring a child into the world noing that it will be taken away from the mother and given to a homosexual couple. Denying this child there essencial right to a loving mother is down right sickening. Letting these women breed like cattle while selling their calfs will never be considered a moral endeveor in my opionion."

Perhaps they have their database linked to another source that has these soundclips available? Much like B&N links reviews to AMG and vice-versa? -
Looking for Roland Kirk-Complete Mercury Recording
RDK replied to dave9199's topic in Offering and Looking For...
So who wants to compile a CDR of 30-second audio-samples of this box set? I bet we could fit it all on one disc... Sort of a "Hooked on Roland Kirk" -

When did this thing become so hard to find? I used to see cheap copies everywhere. It still seems high to me, but if anyone's interested I noticed that Amoeba has a couple of used copies at around $130 each. -
Which artist do you have the most CDs of?
RDK replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Oh I have little doubt that one could own many times more than a hundred Duke recordings and find value in them all. He's one of my holy jazz trinity along with Mingus and Monk. The problem I have (for me) with having so many recordings by the same artist is that, when I'm out buying, I'm too eager to sample some other, less familiar artist's work... even one that I'm unlikely, when all is said and done, to enjoy as much. -
Monk, easily. The funny thing about Ornette - and I know his would be considered sacriledge to many here - is that I usually like his compositions better when played by other people...

Wow - looking over some of the other comments makes me feel humble. A hundred discs by the same artist? I think I may have 35 Mingus discs total and 20-25 by Charlie Haden, but those are the most (leader sessions) I have of anyone. -

Hard to say exactly - I suppose it's different if you count box sets as one or as the number of individual discs. (edited) Hmm... just checked an excel spreadsheet I had made about a year ago. It's not up-to-date and was never exact in the first place, but a few things about it did surprise me. A lot more David Murray on the list than I remembered, as well as more Blakey than I thought. This is based on the number of entries, though, and not individual discs. Question: should the Monk Riverside box count as one, 15 discs (or however many it has), or the 20+ original albums it contains? Mingus Charlie Haden Keith Jarrett Duke Monk David Murray Art Blakey -

I was at Birdland a few weeks back and I was so hoping that the musician - who was (in this case unfortunately) much nicer that Mingus - would lash out at the drunk guy who was talking loudly to the other (mostly embarrassed) members of his party. Charles had style, that's for sure - wish I had the chance to see him in person...

Hey AB - you're gonna love that Capitol Jazz set. It's filled with - how can I say this? - wonderful discoveries.

Well, now there's one less TKM set cluttering up their Stamford office... Just doing my part to ensure a clean and healthy work environment.

Do You Lend Out Your Mosaic Sets?
RDK replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
To add: I specifically remember him handing me the Hall/Johnson/DeParis set right after it sold for some ridiculous amount on Ebay - over $500 or something like that. In fact, the reason he loaned me that one at that time was because he saw what it was going for on Ebay and was hoping to sell it while the fire was still hot. But he wanted me to make a copy of it for myself before he unloaded it! I couldn't believe it. I was so worried about losing the discs that I drove straight home after our meeting and didn't stop (as I had planned) to do some CD shopping on the way. That pic i posted above is funny and, obviously, doesn't represent how I treat my own collection (or the discs that I borrow ) but it is a fact that some people do treat their CDs like that - though I find that jazz fans, like most obsessive music collectors, are pretty anal about how they store and handle their possessions. For the most part I believe (or at least would like to believe) that anyone who even knows about Mosaic knows about their collectibilty and general worth and would handle the discs with the care and respect they deserve. -
Do You Lend Out Your Mosaic Sets?
RDK replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
A few years back, I sold a Mosaic set on Ebay to a guy who lived here in town. Rather than mail it to him, we agreed to meet up for lunch and to complete the transaction. We had a nice chat, hit it off, and have since become good friends. But at the time he was just a guy I had just met to sell some stuff to. But as I was only just getting into buying Mosaics and he was (though much younger than I) a far more advanced Mosaic collector (I think he got some from his dad as he had numerous early Mosaic sets), he offered to let me CDR some of his OOP and extremely expensive discs. I was concerned, of course, since I knew how valuable some of these sets were and I begged him to just burn me copies on his own - but I guess he didn't have a CD burner at the time so when we next hooked up we traded some discs. I loaned him some rather "average" discs while he handed me a stack of Mosaics. I was shocked to say the least - partly because I don't think I would have loaned them out to such a "stranger," but also because someone trusted me enough to take care of them and eventually return them to him. I think I had those discs for a month or two before we finally hooked up again. And the pattern repeated several times. I always felt that I received (musically) far more than I offerred in return, but much more importantly a friendship developed and I was reminded that, in this cruel world that so easily turns one cold and cynical, that there is still such a thing as trust and that some things are more important than little silver discs (even with "Mosaic" stamped upon them). I've actually met and become friends with a couple of other locals whom I met on the old BN board, mostly over the sharing of Mosaic and other OOP jazz recordings. So while I'd much prefer to keep the Mosaics close by my side and "loan" via CDR, I can't agree with those of you who wouldn't loan them out at all... -
Well, Jesus didn't return and start feasting on human brains. Or did he....?

.J. Jackson, One Of MTV's First VJs Dies At Age 62
RDK replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Kinda my first reponse too, Jim. Makes my feel *old.* I still miss those first few VJs that they had - MTV was truly groundbreaking back then. And played music whether we liked it or not. -
Best of luck to you. Enjoy and - most especially - be safe!

I think I did pretty good last night: Found the Basie Live (8 CDs) and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis (5 CDs) sets for $40 each! These are lacking box and booklet, but otherwise complete and two of the jewel cases are still sealed. It's an especially great deal for the Basie as I previously bought the box, booklet, and half the set from Mosaic before they sold out completely...

You might try Djangomusic.com - they used to have a lot of partials (often very cheap) though they seem to have dried up lately. I'll keep my eyes open around town, too, but I haven't seen as many partials as I once did.
-
I didn't realize these had extra stuff - I thought they were just sampler comps of existing tunes. I may have to "get" CDRs of these things after all.
