  1. My bad - I wasn't aware that JSP dealt in "new" recordings as well. I guess to simplify things, anything with Davies or Kendell's name to it is a mark of quality; anything else is suspect...
  2. Hey, I just realized I passed 1000 posts - that's gotta win me something! Ooops, AB just got another 320 in the last half hour...
  3. No, no conspiracy here. It's just that the three "divas" who ended up in the bottom three last night were all essentially the same "type" of singer (if you want, soulful black women). Their votes ended up getting split, so much so that the others - who have more distinctive and likely more juvenile fan bases - ended up with the decks stacked in their favor. Another factor is that so many people "expected" that the diva trio (the best singers by most opinions) were "safe" this week so everybody voted for their second or third choices. Unfortunately, *too many* people probably took that position, which left the favorites out in the cold.
  4. Isn't that the title of a Mingus tune?
  5. Wow... I'm really shocked. The two groups were exactly reversed in who I thought were going to be the top three. I actually feel sorry for John. The poor kid has looked ready to go the last few weeks; not so much that he expected to go, but almost like he *wanted* to go. He knows he's outclassed, but what can he do if people keep voting for him? Geez, I'm so sorry to see Jennifer gone... I guess pop stars are like politicians... we get what we deserve.
  6. Holy Couw!
  7. "Stealing" masterings notwithstanding, I can't believe there's much validity to this claim since most if not all of JSP's releases are of old recordings that are most likely in the public domain (at least in Europe if not yet the U.S.)
  8. Just about anything by Monk works for me. (Or were you talking about romance with a partner?)
  9. Of course this is a list of the Top 50 Worst *popular* songs - songs that were hits and most everybody knows. Few of these come close to being truly *bad* songs, and obviously any intentionally bad songs were kept off the list. Those of you with any extensive LP or CD collections will know what I'm talking about. And bubblegum - "Sugar Sugar," for example - doesn't count. That said, while I'm not sure if they're the worst to me, there are quite a number of songs on that list that I really dislike. But, really, The Doors' "The End?" That's a stone classic.
  10. I'm torn (almost since the beginning) between La Toya and Fantasia as my favorite. I think La Toya has the better "voice," but Fantasia has more style and personality. I'm glad to see that ennifer has been getting better each week. She may have the strongest voice, but she doesn't strike me as "pop" enough for this competition. I do like her though. George seems like a really nice guy and I really want to root for him, but he just doesn't do it for me as a solo performer. I really agree with Simon's early comment about George fitting right in with a Temptations-like group. One of my early favorites was Diana - the performance that got her into the top 12 really knocked me out - but she's disappointed me ever since. I think she's very talented, but she's just too young and has trouble finding the "emotion" in the songs she's singing. I think this is the other John's week to go...
  11. Man, that's just sick! The woman was *elderly*...
  12. Man, who are you guys dating? I've never gotten anywhere playing jazz for the ladies...
  13. My wife and I agree - none finer than Avalon!
  14. Hey, where's the Unknown Comic on that list?
  15. And a terrific version of "My Back Pages" it is too.
  16. I'm back. Well, that was a waste of a perfectly good search. Didn't want to post there and bump that useless (though amusing) thread.
  17. Damn! We try to pretend PFunk's post about pornography wasn't true, and then Ray posts this...we'll never live this down! Damn, I missed it. Now I have to do a search. (And I wonder why I don't get anything done.)
  18. Well, the good news is that you seem to be okay. Is it considered hit-and-run if the driver didn't even realize that he hit you (and with a bus I can understand him not realizing it). Sheesh...
  19. I'm not sure what's worse: the album itself or the fact that it gets such a "thorough" review... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A11520r4al489
  20. If tribute albums pale in comparison to the original artist.... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A2bkmu3q0an2k
  21. Good god! SV is a giant!
  22. This is where broad comps come in very handy. You could stick to a label comp - Blue Note, Verve, Prestige, etc - or even something like the Ken Burns Jazz box. I mean, there's 80 years of musical history and while someone might dig mid-period Coltrane they might also dig early ("trad") jazz, bebop, big band, organ grooves, or one of the many types of fusion. With a sampler, you can figure out what *style* you like and then get more specific from there.
  23. *Guilty* as charged! I tend to use asterisks - * - rather than underlining or italics just because I find it easy - for me - to type. I'm on a few boards that have "quick post" mode, where you don't have the benefit of clickable formating, but beyond that I just find it easier to use the *'s rather than underlining or italics or bold.
  24. Thanks guys! JPC has the one box on backorder, but at least there's a chance.
  25. The funniest story I ever heard about the Northridge quake happened to a friend of my wife. He had, just days before, gotten into a skiing accident and broke a leg (or something similar). So he was heavily medicated to ensure that he get some rest and sleep through the night. Well, he did sleep through the night - and through the quake - so when he woke up the next morning he couldn't at first understand why his apartment had been completely thrashed all around him... I've been through a lot of quakes since I moved to SoCal 25 years ago (from the relatively stable New York), but all those little 3s and 4s and even occassional 5s that I experienced over the years (and pretty much learned to shrug off) were nothing compared to the Northridge quake. You tend to take such things for granted until you experience a "big one" - and the ironic thing, of course, is that Northridge wasn't really "that big" in the overall scheme of things...
