  1. "Free Jazz?" I'll take almost any jazz over those miserable choices.
  2. This can't be for real.
  3. Understand your point, but isn't that a bit like asking us who/what are our favorite jazz artists/records and then be shocked that the lists all include Ellington, Monk, Mingus, Davis, Coltrane, etc? I think the problem might be that the lists only include a "top 4" - the variety would no doubt come further down the list.
  4. Much as I dig vinyl, I'd probably go for the CD if I had the choice.
  5. For those so inclined, Black Ark just showed up on emusic. With only four tracks, it's a bargain of a download.
  6. For a cat, circumcision is probably the least of his worries.
  7. I am, my wife's Jewish, and if we had had a boy he'd probably have been cut as well. But honestly, I'm kinda glad I didn't have to cross that bridge...
  8. I'm mostly out of my element too (I like some Glass, Riley, Bang on a Can stuff, but haven't gone much deeper), but for those interested in sampling, several of these works are available on emusic. Just downloaded a few of Gann's recommendations.
  9. Picked up a few 32Jazz titles over the weekend and was enjoying going over this thread again. Some horrible but funny covers here!
  10. Well at least he only wants $2.98 for shipping. Insurance would be a killer though.
  11. What you willing to pay? I can be convinced if the number is "right". Hmmm. Does tapping one's foot in a bathroom stall count as "flirting?"
  12. I like Keith Jarrett so I'm staying out of this discussion.
  13. There's a Mosaic Select for you: "The Complete Lee Morgan 'Cornbread' Takes"
  14. Reinier=awesome name! Too bad I've already named my son. Just rename him. Right click son -> choose "rename" from context menu. Thanks! I needed that.
  15. I daresay it's unfair to compare the genius of Ellington to just about any other musician, let alone Flannigan.
  16. Coincidentally, I read that earlier today too. Great story!
  17. I can only wish that someone would flirt with me!
  18. As most of the people here know by now, my name is Guy Kopelowicz. When I joined the BNBB back in early 2002, it was the first forum I enlisted in. When asked for a name I could not put in my real name since I had a rather highprofile job in a newsagency and could not register under my own name. So I took the first name that flashed through my mind. It was brownie - could have been fruscella, ayler, canto (for eric cantona) or any other favorites. Clifford Brown was (and still remains) one of my heroes. The name brownie stuck and I never gave second thought to modifying it. Seriously, I always thought you "named" yourself after the camera.
  19. Um, I'm pretty sure Chris was joking.
  20. It's like selling a CDR for more than an original CD. Isn't "modern art" funny?
  21. And it goes without saying that Brownie will be missed. But we really should have another thread for that!
  22. Allen, I still find it hard to believe that you were at the heart of a recent spat. You obviously have a great sense of humor and tend not to take matters here too seriously. You'e a genuinely funny guy... and not just because of how you dress.
  23. Racing the kids off to school now, but just had to say, "Gosh, golly, and bravo!" guys. I'm so happy for Jim and proud of us all right now.
  24. Gee, can we start calling you guys "Gorts" as well now? Seriously, I think some of you are way overthinking his. You act like the board is broken and needs some repairs done to it; what it needs is funding, some admin oversight, and occassionally some light moderation. I've been here from the start and can only think of a handful of threads and/or posters that needed attention. Even the example of the objectionable avatar thread - which was closed - was pretty much being self-policed, with only a few people either being overly sensitive or merely taking it seriously (I was laughing and rolling my eyes all the way through it). Now some of you guys are suggesting "rules" when none were needed before. Why don't we simply proceed as we've always been doing and (as Larry and Chuck suggest) deal with any problems when and if they arise.
  25. I think semi-annual fundraisers are best. Paypal (for example) would eat up too many fees if paid in smaller amounts monthly. I don't think there's any good way of "policing" voluntary contributions - I think it must fall on everyone's conscience as to how much and how often they can donate. But it does look like $20-30 per 70-100 people should be the annual goal. And if the immediate (say, annual) goal is reached, any "extra" funds could go toward sustaining the board for a longer period of time.
