Current trend: selling original CDs but keeping the mp3s
RDK replied to Kyo's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Me too, at least to some extent - I've been re-buying many of the OJCs that have gone out of print recently. Many of those are only available in rather lousy 128kbps quality from eMusic (where I got them initially) and I really prefer to have the liner notes available when listening to the music. I'm doing much the same thing, but an FYI - nearly all of the early 128kbs mp3s from emusic have been upgraded over the years. They now sound much better and you can re-download them again for free if you still have or can sign up to your old account. Try that at iTunes! -
Welcome Dan!

Well now! I think I missed your earlier posts, but welcome aboard!

Whatever happened to advertising and selling one's image the old fashioned way? Pancake syrup. Now Wynton should put his name and face on pancake syrup. I'd buy that!

I know nothing about Fogelberg, but I know that ain't Liza, that's Julia Louis Dreyfus. Liza was in his sig at the time. He frequently changes sigs (hey, I enjoy looking, but he's featured far more attractive ones than JLD (or Liza for that matter) IMO). Gotta say you're wrong there - that is a prime photo of JLD. True that. In fact, that's by far the best photo of her that I've ever seen. Otherwise, I'm not much of a fan.

It's never as simple as that. The voting is pretty much what it's made out to be: everyone (who gets to vote) votes for either their favorite or for whoever they want to win it. Popular albums/artists are more popular, naturally, and get more votes. I've never bought all the "conspiracy theories" that plague award contests or top ten lists. My guess is, this year, the votes were pretty damn close, with Herbie squeeking by as the bulk of the votes were split evenly between the other nominees.

Sure. If you ask me - and if you have a genre-spanning appreciation of music, not just an "i dig jazz and everything else sucks" mentality - there's always something good mixed in with the crap. Many unique performances, artists mixing it up with each other, exposure to new music and genres. Maybe I'm just a "glass is half full" kind of guy, but I actually dug seeing Herbie perform "Rhapsody in Blue."

"Rehab" has gone from one of the catchiest singles of the year to by far the most ironic. Thought Winehouse's performce was okay, but also hard to listen to with all the bagage attached. Agree re: Tony Bennett, Aretha, and especially Jerry Lee Lewis. Little Richard still has it in spades, as does Tina, and I don't care what anyone says but I like the Foos far more than I ever did Nirvana. Thought the Beatles tributes were fine; just shows that classic songs can be sung by almost anybody and be done well. I thought "Let it Be" was especially moving. I almost fell out of my chair when Herbie won. From the sound of the crowd, I think everyone was surprised.

Too late, Larry, I ordered both! But if those are the only two bad ones I'll still be battling over .800. -
The longest time between punchline and payoff in history!

Fuck'em. I hear Spears more times than not has had people call the dudes with the cameras to let them know where she was going to be. Truth that. She also gets into her can and just drives around for an hour or two, going nowhere but to Starbucks, a gas station, or the corner store, simply leading the paps around.

Hmm. I don't dislike that "dreaded bass direct" as much as some of you.

Thanks again, Al. A very nice, enjoyable disc. I can't fault it much other than to say that, the first half at least, has a certain sameness about some of the tracks - mostly uptempo, small group swing - and only a few of them really made me sit up and take notice. Not that that's bad, just that I tend to look for more variety in these BFT comps - things to shake up my expectations. As it is, this disc works very well as a compilation; nothing feels too jarring or out of place here. At the same time, I can't really identify anything except maybe a tune or two. I suck at identifying specific musicians so I'll skip that endeavor this go-round and just comment in generalities. 1. Love the tribal beat and the soaring trumpet. Don’t think it’s Dizzy, but it has that Dizzy-Chano thing going on that I really dig. 2. Nice playing, jaunty tune, but a bit generic. I could listen to this kind of stuff all day, but there’s nothing here that really stands out to me either. 3. Like this more, and it has a stereo spread to die for. 4. Good, but a bit old-fashioned. 5. Good 6. Also good. 7. More of the same, but I’m digging the piano solo and drum work in the second half. 8. Familiar-sounding tune. I’m liking your trumpet numbers best of all. 9. A nice change-of-pace. 10. Very good! 11. I don’t usually mind e-bass, but I’m finding it annoying here, giving the track an overproduced sound. The solos aren’t bad though. 12. Okay. 13. Better. 14. Digging this one a lot. Love the rhythm and the percussive piano; good solos. 15. Like this one a lot as well, though not sure why this more than so many of the others. Really like the vibes here, but it also feels, I dunno, more authentically swinging than some of the other cuts. 16. Finally a familiar tune! And a very nice version too. One of my favorites of these tracks.

Even better than the Top Ten list was Dave's hilarious recap of the game. "Until the fourth quarter, David Tyree hadn't caught a pass since the fourth grade."

Haven't watched much football over the last few seasons, but last night's game was terrific. Being a big fan of the '72 Dolphins - hey, I was ten! - I'm fairly pleased that the Pats lost, though I do sympathize and even agree that several of those Dolphins players have become increasingly obnoxious over the years. It's really silly, though, to compare team of different eras and try to declare a "best." The game has changed so much over the years. I of course dig the "mythology" that's grown up out of the '72 season and it was loads of fun watching the Pats come so very close to going undefeated themselves. It will also offer much amusement over the ensuing years debating which is the greater accomplishment: going 18-1 or going 17-0.

I don't think Laurie needs to worry about this. Anyone want some Art Pepper cassettes? http://www.ioffer.com/search/items/art+pep...offer/0/0/false

Not sure what this means beyond the obvious "we're coming to the end of the CD era," but a number of Storyville discs showed up on emusic a couple of weeks ago.

Listening - and enjoying! - now. Will add comments later, but so far both discs are enjoyable and fun.

Alex Ross goes ga-ga over awful
RDK replied to Larry Kart's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Heh. Was thinking the same thing. Don't know this other Alex Ross - and don't really know Greenwood either aside from him being in radiohead - but I dug the score. -
Question about Google images search?

I dunno, but that's a great story! -
RDK's signature (You can do what you like with jazz as long as it doesn't lose it's Deep Dark Blue Center." - Hoagy Carmichael) made me think of this one: Thanks Al, I'll try and grab the files tonight! With good reason you thought of that, Flurin. Collier took his title from Hoagy's quote (which is where I first heard it, in Collier's liner notes).
