  1. Who invented the sub-genre of sax playing that I refer to as "SNL sax," and why would anyone choose that sound? It is the sound of square white guys who wear stupid hats yet think they are cool.
  2. Loves me some Nick DeCaro!
  3. Any other fans of this album? He plays Rhodes on one side and grand on the others. Group includes acoustic bass, drum kit, and conga player. Most tunes are in a Latin/funky groove. I live for records that sound like this.
  4. A stellar transaction! Thank you!
  5. Full size of the CD insert? Larry, do you know "Jazz Heat, Bongo Beat" by Buddy Colette and the Latin Jazz All Stars?
  6. Too bad they did not include the (amazing) original cover art for "Tanganyika." Buddy Collette's "Polynesia" has also been released on CD:
  7. This is a great record:
  8. Maybe a moderator can move the above post to the existing thread on the film?
  9. I hate it when metal bands sell out and do pop.

  11. The recent expanded version of Last Tango, which includes the film tracks as well as the album, is a revelation. Some film score albums really do a great job of presenting the music cohesively and fairly comprehensively. In this case, I will never listen to the LP version again save for a couple of key tracks. The film version is really definitive, and you get much more of the collaboration between Oliver Nelson and Gato. RIP.
  12. Just picked up the expanded "Last Tango in Paris," which includes both the LP and film versions. Great stuff. RIP.
  13. Who did the score?
  14. In addition to composing and arranging the masterpiece Satan in High Heels, Lowe arranged two very nice (short) crime jazz albums for RCA, with the amazing title TV Action Jazz! (Vols. 1 and 2).
  15. Or a pretty good description of a brilliant artist.
  16. Why post the hideous budget reissue cover when you can post the original?
  17. He recorded under his name only one album, Provocatif, for UA. He had a percussive style, variously reminiscent of Duke and Monk. Did he ever record as a sideman? http://flashstrap.blogspot.com/2012/08/jungle-bells-summer-storm-john.html
  18. Yeah, but Dad was there to greet him in the afterlife with a bottle of Jack!
  19. RIP. http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/16/entertainment/frank-sinatra-jr-dies/index.html
  20. How do you ignore the sociological contexts that led to the music's creation to begin with?

  22. My favorite Morricone scores are from edgy films, including the Spaghetti Westerns and Giallos. I am glad he won for a score for that type of film, instead of something Oscar-ready like The Mission.
  23. I must have about 100 Morricone albums. While this one is not likely to crack my top ten favorite list, it is very effective both within and outside of the film. It is very appropriate that he is being recognized for the kind of edgy film that put him on the map to begin with. I will take Hateful 8 over any of his other nominations, such as Days of Heaven, The Mission, The Untouchables, etc.
