Jeez...I've got to go listen to some Dick Dale to cleanse my ears after that. Wow, I wouldn't trade even one of my Korla Pandit LPs for Dick Dale's entire output! To each his own!

What do you make of the manufacturers' claims to "use only OUR cleaning fluid with this unit," etc.? Is each company's fluid specifically formulated to work with the various materials that are used in the units themselves, or is this simply a ploy to sell their own product by playing into vinyl junkies' paranoia? I have a Nitty Gritty and I'm having a hard time finding the 16 oz bottle at either B&M stores or online.

It looks like the Amazon version of "Lotus Land" may be a EU public domain issue, which would partially explain the wrong speed. There is an entire side of an MGM George Shearing LP - I think it is "An Evening With" - that was transferred at a woefully slow speed, it was as if someone played the 78s at 45 rpm and no one noticed. I had to pitch correct the album and it is fine now. As for "Doctored for," whatever. I still think the cover is awesome, and I happen to like jazz from that era that evokes the urban jungle. Those were the times. If they were riffing on "The Man with the Golden Arm" for the cover image, all the better.

So is anyone familiar with that gorgeous version of "Lotus Land" by Calvin Jackson with Peter Appleyard on vibes? Don't bother with the version on Amazon. It has been transferred at the wrong speed. The correct version is on the Columbia LP, and it should be in Eb minor. I would post a youtube link, but there is none.

I'll be 15 in September. As for the "jazzers are junkies," the hypo needle is a reference to the album title.

Tasteless? It's AWESOME!

One of the most memorable concerts ever experienced by this recording-centric listener was a two-night John Zorn retrospective at NEC in mid-1990s. Can't remember if anyone wore camouflage pants; I was in the nosebleed section and forgot my opera glasses.

He is on the definitive version of "Lotus Land," by Calvin Jackson on a Columbia LP. And he is the leader on one of the greatest albums ever made:

Who cares what a jazz musician is wearing offstage? I know I don't care about it at all. Isn't it interesting that piece that was quoted bothered to tell us what he was wearing? Why not take it up with the journalist who wrote the piece? He/she thought it was worth mentioning. I happen to admire John Zorn for the most part. However, I think the stylistic and aesthetic choices made by artists - outside of their "art" - are relevant; and whenever anyone - jazz musician or not - makes a bad fashion choice, I will call them out on it - especially if the journalist who wrote the piece in question thought it was worth mentioning. You have the choice to ignore me just as much as you have the right to ignore poor fashion choices, John Zorn's or your own.

Oh, I didn't know there were two. "Caribe" is the one that I have. Rhythmically, it is nice, but harmonically, it's pretty basic.

Thanks Larry. There is also a nice instrumental orchestral version by arranger Robert Farnon that was recorded for London/Decca Phase 4 in the 1960s. A few parts of it sound kind of stilted, but overall it's a nice arrangement.
