  2. Not sure, but I think there is an online chat with him coming up in a week or so. I will post the date here when I find it.
  3. Since you guys are an organ groove band, why not actually make the fictional 1973 CTI LP "Redbonin'" by the fictional Cochise Jones, as described in Michael Chabon's "Telegraph Avenue." You would have to write the title track, come up with a groovy arrangement of "I Don't Know How to Love Him," and come up with Pete Turner-esque album art. Oh, and press it on vinyl. I've been waiting for this album ever since I started reading the novel.
  4. As far as fake/rechanneled stereo goes, sometimes it collapses well to mono and sometimes it does not, depending on the process that was used. When you fold Capitol Duophonic from the 1950s, it sounds like it is coming from inside a phone booth. Other companies used subtle EQ variations between the two sides, and this latter type often folds just fine.
  5. In theory, no. But I have some CDs containing mono music transferred from vinyl in stereo, believe it or not, so the mono button provides the same function.
  6. This is true. With a mono LP, the surface noise and sound from the stylus traveling through the groove are in stereo with a stereo cartridge. Some of the sounds disappear through phase cancellation when you switch to mono. Also, minor clicks and pops on either side are reduced when you switch to mono, as the center (musical) signal increases by +3db relative to sounds on the side. Thanks for the explanation. I sold my LP collection and turntable long ago and didn't remember how this mono/stereo thing worked. I should add that you can effectively achieve the same thing by hitting the amp's "mono" button that you would achieve with a mono cartridge.
  7. You're welcome. Back to this box set: While it is tempting, I have accumulated so much Miles Davis over the years that I'm pretty picky about what I buy. I have lots of these in mono on LP, too.

  9. Herbie Mann's African Suite was issued under Johnny Rae's name, and later under Herbie Mann's name. Let's get this thread moved to "Discographies" before it is sunk by all the album cover threads.
  10. This is amazing. It sounds like a homo-erotic 70s dirt-rock ballad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzYHllLv_IE
  11. "Different Drum," written by Thee Great Michael Nesmith, is a tune I never tire of. Love the Stone Poneys' hit version.
  12. Anybody who would care enough to watch that guy's video already knows that artists can be assholes, so what's the point?
  13. So the two I have and these two are the only ones I need?
  14. Listening to "If I Could Do It All Over Again" and "Plump in the Night." These records are amazing.
  15. ?!?!? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F4wutgqYLQ
  16. "As Time Goes By" is simply awful. Forget about "Casablanca" and just listen to this turkey: Clumsy and corny lyrics, trite and repetitive melodic phrases, chord progressions that occasionally sound like they're going someplace interesting but then suddenly stall. How famous was this song prior to the film? Did the film revive it? I'll bet the farm that, were it not for "Casablanca," this song would have sunk into obscurity. And good riddance.
  17. Some who have studied Bruckner's symphonies claim that he did not write 9 symphonies, but rather wrote 1 symphony 9 times. I have no opinion either way.
  18. RIP. Love her crime jazz and bossa LPs. Loved her on piano jazz.
  19. I prefer "of their time" albums very much. Which "both" are you referring to? Presumably "Manteca" is one of them. What is the other? I want to buy it immediately, if I don't already have it. Assuming your review is accurate.
  20. We've had numerous George Shearing threads, but I have not been able to find one devoted specifically to the quintet from this era. Has there ever been any kind of definitive CD set covering this material, and if so, how is the sound? Do you think the master tapes for this music still exist? I have the Verve double LP from the 70s, and there are some glaring omissions. I have, I think, all of the MGM LP collections through the years, on both 10" and 12". Side one of "An Evening With" was transferred at a woefully slow speed that I was able to correct digitally. I would love a box set of this stuff on CD with good sound.
  21. OK, that's more like it. It looks like Clare Fischer's Pacific Jazz album "So Danco Samba" is part of this seies also. That is a killer album!
  22. That made my morning. Happy weekend!
