  1. I actually like that album. It reminds me of something that a couple who met on The Dating Game would listen to over fondue following their six-night stay in romantic Puerto Rico! This album would have worked with either a different arranger or a different pianist.
  2. KPM is a British music library. The 1000 series consists largely of late 60s/early 70s funky/groovy/decadent/now sound stuff.
  3. Chewy, "Surfin'" was on Candix.
  4. The Junior Mance Touch may have been a great album if the bass player had bothered to tune prior to rolling tape. That rendered it unlistenable for me. Where was the producer?
  5. The Afro Rock album is amazing!
  6. 21 albums from the KPM 1000 series are now available for downloading on iTunes. You can search using "KPM 1000." Ten bucks a throw. Not sure if they're coming out on LP or CD.
  7. Thanks all for the kind words. I see that I am not alone and my heart goes out to you on your losses also. I should add that she went peacefully in her sleep, so their were no traumatic visits to the emergency room. Man with the Golden Arm: It may sound silly, but yeah, she reacted differently to different types of music. On the rare occasions when I put on pop/rock, she would leave the room! She seemed to go for jazz and anything with bongos in it, which is half of my collection . She looked beautiful lounging in the tiki room with an outstretched arm, while something like a Chico Hamilton album on Impulse! was spinning. We have two other cats, Ilya and Angelique, so their presence will help.
  8. EMI bought Capitol in the late 50s. Frank soon led a mass exodus to Reprise, and brought Dean, Keely Smith, Nelson Riddle, Les Baxter and others. Nat King Cole stayed.
  9. I wish Bill Evans had done more records that weren't in a piano trio setting. I know that was his thing, but it's not my favorite format.
  10. My cat Brigitte passed into the next realm last night, Oct. 28, 2009. She was 12 years old in gorilla years. We had her since she was a kitten, right when my wife and I first got together, so her life was our life. At her last visit to the vet, the doctor said, "She seems very young for her age." I replied, "She doesn't put much wear and tear on herself." She was a great cat, very affectionate, few surprises. This is one of my favorite pictures of her, taken in our tiki room. RIP, Sweet Kitteh...
  11. Thanks Clifford. You probably know this, but UK Columbia was a part of EMI, hence the Capitol connection. US Columbia was CBS in the UK. MG once provided a very interesting history of labels with the Columbia name, either here or on that other board.
  12. Well, during the early years, the girls were screaming so loud that you couldn't hear him. By the early 70s they got Ricky Fataar and then later a string of other drummers. There is a video that you've probably seen of them, circa 1968, where they're doing "Good Vibrations." It's the five piece line-up with Bruce, no Brian. It's a very effective, minimalist version of the tune. Whatever Dennis is or isn't doing in this video works. Not sure if it was really live or if they recorded it in advance and lip-synched.
  13. Various halloween rekkids in preparation for my Halloween radio show in one hour!
  14. Dennis was the babe magnet, so his drumming didn't matter. He also turned out to be BY FAR the group's best songwriter after Brian. And he was a hell of a singer. And Hal Blaine played drums on the vast majority of those records, so it doesn't matter. Up over and out.
  15. Actually, I think Mo's drumming was the perfect fit for the Velvets' approach.
  16. The topics here are not picked over the way the records are.
  17. The idea of going to a record show run by a bunch of fellow vinyl obsessives seems pointless. I'll stick to thrift stores.
  18. Accordion was used to a fair degree on some older European jazz recordings. It tends to work well in that context, and does offer a certain European flair, but it's not really my cup of tea.
  19. You forgot to mention Elmer Bernstein's great score.
  20. Interesting story, thanks for sharing MG. Never knew this. "Bop Girl Goes Calypso" has got to be one of the greatest titles ever.
  21. Consider it a compliment to your knowledge and taste. I kicked myself off of that site ages ago.
  22. It's a kickin' album - you'd probably like it MG, along with the Candido I spun previously.
