  1. Oh yes, there's something ridiculously heart-wrenching about that theme, which plays in well with the ever-questing nature of Caine's life in the series. Agree. The composer was Jim Helms. Not sure what else he did. The Kung Fu album is worth seeking out if you don't have it.
  2. How would you describe his solo style? I've heard him only in group settings. I love his mod/big band stuff on Capitol from the mid 60s.
  3. On a semi-related topic, I always thought the theme from "Kung Fu" was really beautiful. I have the soundtrack album on WB, featuring Caine's bald head (perhaps in a move to capitalize on Isaac Hayes's success).
  4. Mr T - It will be a 45rpm EP I believe with an instrumental version of the music from the 'Dr Terror's House of Horrors' movie. Tubby and his band of 1964 vintage (with Jimmy Deuchar and Alan Ganley) appear in a 15-20 minute segment - I have the movie but have not heard the EP yet (Trunk haven't released it but there's some advance information on the Trunk Records website). Limited to 666 copies when it does appear. Thanks. I'm a sucker for record covers like this. If the music inside is good, all the better!
  5. This is a great thread. It's been years since I read O'Hara and am not sure if I ever knew this poem.
  6. Sidewinder, how is that "Voodoo Session" album? Any interesting instrumentation or tunes?
  7. The only re-make I liked was "Cape Fear." It was true to the original in spirit, and the director had the good sense to use Bernard Herrmann's score (most of it, at least) for the remake. Has anyone mentioned the great Pelham score by David Shire? I'm sure he didn't score the re-make (though he did score "Zodiac" a few years back).
  8. Do other artists get to use them?
  9. I was listening to "Bakiff" by Duke Ellington (Blanton-Webster band version) and was thinking how sad it was that Jimmy died so young. It got me thinking about a subject I know almost nothing about: What happened to famous musicians' instruments after they died? I realize, sadly, that some jazz musicians had their instruments in and out of pawn shops and Lord knows what happened to some of them. Does anyone have any good stories about this, either proven, rumored, or anything else?
  10. I'm sure you did. That said, Duke was in regular rotation when I was growing up, thanks to my Dad (who I bet was born before you were). I thankfully inherited many of his LPs. EDIT: Most of the Ellington I listen to is from 1938 or later. Whenever I hear any of the earlier stuff, I'm always astounded at how forward-looking it is.
  11. Duke Ellington - Blue Light: Jazz for that Relaxed Mood - Columbia (6-eye mono) 50s reissue of 30s material.
  12. Bad Bossa Nova was the reissue title, presumably handled by the record label. The original had a title like "Jungle Soul" or something, which is much closer to the spirit of the music.
  13. Various - The Jazz Arranger Vol. 1 (Columbia, mono). Anyone know how many more volumes there are in this series?
  14. Does this bossa quickie cash-in work better than some of the other bossa nova quickie cash-ins?
  15. Is this good, or does it come of like a quickie cash-in?
  16. As a certified Brazil freak but also a US citizen, this was a win-win game for me. The US goalie was phenomenal.
  17. I didn't care who won.
  18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ker24VSMImo
  19. Herbie Mann and the Wailing Dervishes - Atlantic (stereo blue and green)
  20. Boy, there's a category. There sure is. I must have 150 albums filed in the crime jazz/spy section. Kenyon Hopkins is one of the greats in the crime jazz genre.
  21. Having a Rave Up with the Yardbirds - Epic (yellow label, rechanneled stereo) "Still I'm Sad" sounds like Morricone.
  22. Kenyon Hopkins - Lonelyville: the NERVOUS Beat - ABC Paramount (stereo) Essential crime jazz.
  23. Herbie Mann's African Suite - UA (stereo)
  24. South Seas: 2 parts white or coconut rum 1 part blue curacao 1 part lime juice shake and serve over ice in a clear glass with umbrellas. Place an album on the turntable such as Herbie Mann's African Suite - UA (stereo)
