  3. Yes it is a rare one, but not sought after. I think we can consider this record as a sort of the "first try" of what would become later the "Clarke Boland big band". Unfortunately my "CBBB" albums are stored else where, but if remember well, many of the "future" (we are in 1961) CBBB musicians are already featured in the Golden Eight. The producer of the session is Gigi Campi, he had an active role in the CBBB releases.

    René Thomas played a non cutaway ES 150 (then switched for an es 175) This is a special soud, strong and dry. Nothing to compare with very wide bodies like Super 400, for axample. Don't know anyway if his ES 150 had soap bar or older charlie C p'ups ? Anyone know that ?

  12. In those glorious cassette (and iron curtain !) days, i had recorded a fantastic Abdullah Ibrahim concert broadcasted from Poland. He played with Carlos Ward. Extraordinaire !!! it was in september 1983. Do you have any information about this concert ? ever been (re)issued ? or similar line up session ? i still have the cassette... but i'd like to upgrade. ...thank you in advance

Unless you automatically place a (monetary) premium on the fact that that particular record you are coveting is necessarily one that might actually have been in the grubby hands of some record wheeling and dealing pimp in, say, 1958 - regardless of whether the original mastering or pressing quality on that 1958 "original" was in fact inferior to a slightly later pressing of, say, 1963 or 1965 or whenever. :D I can very well imagine cases like those described by Chuck Nessa (and can think of a few, though not BN's) so I sort of understand his common-sense stance on this. Collecting is fine (aren't we all collectors of sorts) and invariably goes with a fair bit of fetichism and searches for holy grails once you've gotten into it beyond certain limits, but you CAN overdo it, you know, especially if all of you "first pressing collectors" work yourselves into a frenzy that turns more and more aspects of that kind of collecting into a sort of "self-fulfilling prophecy". For me it is very simple : if i like an album, i want the original press in NM condition. Period. It is not a question of sound, or mastering or anything like that. I want the piece of history. If one of my favourite record is worth nothing on the current collector market, it is good news. One of my all time favourite jazz records is "Streamline", by Rolf Kuhn : i paid 14 $ for a NM copy. Its a treasure for me, and a holy grail. And what if i had to pay hundreds of $$$$ to get it ? Well i would have paid. Now regarding the "self fulfilling prophecy" it is somewhat true : the more i pay the more i think my record has great value. Its for the show. I think many Japanese collectors are into this frenzy. But in fact, the market is not so crazy. You can see it on some occasion. For example a (supposedly) near mint copy of "The House of Blue lights" recently sold for more than 500 $ on Ebay. You can call it frenzy, because many previous auctions were in the 300 range (its a big price !). Now you can find a NM copy of this one with a 600 $ buy it now price. But nobody actually bought it, and nobody will. Why ? because the two or three fanatics already have it. Many collectors already have their. And potential buyers are not willing to pay this price..; So, i bet that the seller will list this one at regular auction, and it will sell for 250 - 350. This is fair.
  14. You can try to find an "united artists" cover : not laminated, but colors are almost the same and the rest is 100 % identical. Or a "classic cover", but i've never seen it. So ican't tell you how near or far from the real deal it is. "jazzman detroit" is one of the finest hard bop session ever, imo. you are lucky to have this one.
  15. At the Angry Squire gig he could barely get enough air into the horn to play it. Of course there was a piano player. I think it might have been Duke Jordan. I don't think Hank played any original tunes. I believe it was Lodi Carr's gig. I red on another forum , a couple of times ago, that there were probably also Ron Carter and Al Harewood. That makes = Mobley, Jordan, Carter, Harewood (Hank Mobley Quartet plus Lodi Carr, or Lodi Carr and Hank Mobley Quartet ?)

I like everything on this session : Nice songs, fine arrangements by Marty Paich, Jack Montrose and others, with so many things to hear in so short songs, brilliant soloing, including Bob Gordon and Don Fagerquist. And a sublime art cover. Overall : :tup :tup :tup
  19. I don't remember what tunes were played. The singer Lodi Carr was fronting the gig. I was stuffed in a standing-room-only area and it was difficult to concentrate. This was twenty years ago. To my dismay as well as yours, I don't remember any more than I told already. I wish there was more to it than that. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks for telling the story.   21. The buyer (rainbow-mountain) won my NM George Wallington Cafe Bohemia on Progressive a few years ago for $700 USD. He owns a paper mill in Japan, I believe? Okay !! he just buy cardboard to recycle. Now i see. Seriously , this guy bids on and wins EVERYTHING of interest in Jazz recording. He must have 5 samples of every record !! last second sniper, of course...I can't count how many times he has outbidded me !! I praise him for all the money he makes me save !!
