I like the Mosaic people, and the reissue program, but the boxes and the style of the booklet never did anything for me, and I also don't look on the sets as collectors' items. It's just the music, and the photos, and, sometimes, the notes. I wish they had included color reproductions of the original LP album art, where available. It's sad that the heavy hitters on eBay (many of whom probably don't even care for the music) - and NO reference to you guys - have pumped up the prices of these sets and all the early Blue Note LPs.

The original recording sound was not great, especially when compared with Columbia and Rudy. The drums usually sound muddy, as if they were recorded inside a cardboard box. Along with many others, I wish that Rudy had recorded these wonderful and important sessions. It is well-known that Trane was very fond of Rudy, and glad to be back in his studio (new to him at that time) when he joined Impulse. But that does not stop one getting deep into these albums. I had the original LPs, and I'm happy with the original CDs and the box set. I've always found the MJQ albums (in any format) to be clear as a bell, though.

Complete list of Impulse 20-bit digipacks (IMPD)?

After that puzzlingly worded reply, I wish I hadn't bothered, to be honest. Typical of this board. -
The Functionally Illiterate Are Offended By The Grammys
Shrdlu replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Looks like an early 50s Hoover report. What an untidy mess. -
The fourth of my three favotites is the 1955 Bohemia session. Simple instrumentation, but extremely tasty. And now with alternate takes, thanks to the Debut records box set. (Jim, you need the msn emoticons. I want the one with the guy with his tongue sticking out.)

Complete list of Impulse 20-bit digipacks (IMPD)?
Shrdlu replied to peterintoronto's topic in Discography
Right, here's a quick list, corrections welcome, a few errors likely. I've stopped at 9200, as the series was not really original Impulse anymore by then, and many of the later issues were compilations ("Best of" and so on). This decision may have led to a few serious omissions. This is what was not reissued by Michael Cuscuna. I have included (i.e. deleted from the LP list) Michael's earlier jewel case CDs along with the digipacks; there were not many of those. I have also included those albums that were added as bonus tracks with other reissues, e.g. Lawrence Brown's "Inspired Abandon", included on a Hodges CD. I may have included an album or two that was in a set not produced by Cuscuna. I'm not sure about the Mingus and Clark Terry albums. Steve Kuhn's "October Suite" and Yusef Lateef's "The Golden flute" are on digipacks, but they are much more recent, and I'm not sure whether Cuscuna was involved with them (if that matters at all, and it probably doesn't). i'm hungry for a hot dog
Shrdlu replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Your lunch looks fantastic, Lon. I've never been a big fan of le hot dog, really. French's "mustard" is one of the most disgusting substances ever made. Jay Leno said it well when they featured it and said "We may not be French, but we sure are yellow". -
Complete list of Impulse 20-bit digipacks (IMPD)?
Shrdlu replied to peterintoronto's topic in Discography
I have just about all of the CDs that Michael Cuscuna produced for this series. I can check that against the list of the original LPs when I get some time. As you probably know, the CDs were mainly reissues of the LPs, adding a track from the three "Definitive Jazz Scene" compilation LPs from the same session if there was one. Those compilation LPs were, of course, not reissued. The mid 70s owners of Impulse threw out nearly all unissued tracks, so there are none on these CDs. In a few cases, Michael generously included the contents of two LPs on one CD. For example, Sonny Stitt's "Now" was included with "Salt and Pepper", by Stitt and Paul Gonsalves. He seems to have felt that there would be little demand for those albums that were added as bonus tracks. (I strongly disagree with his omission of Side 2 of Milt Jackson's "Jazz 'N' Samba" when he included Side 1 on the CD reissue of "Statements". Fortunately, I have the LP, and the Japanese CD of "Jazz 'N' Samba", one of Milt's best albums.) The sound on these IMPD CDs is quite good, but generally a little lacking in presence, especially when compared with their various Japanese counterparts. Why, oh why, are U.S. CDs usually so markedly inferior to the Japanese ones? -
Compare with most of today's female vocalists, most of whom just squawk.

Never heard a bad Mingus record. I guess my favorite three (if I have to pick) would be Arum, Dynasty and that Columbia twofer, live in NYC in 1971. There is also a Columbia studio album from about 1971 that's real good. I forget the name now, but it has some narration on it.

The Dr Dre earbuds sound fantastic, and better than any loudspeakers I've heard. To take an advertising by-line from that Stella weewee, they are reassuringly expensive. I'd love to hear their over-the-ear headphones, but they are about $200 on eBay, way more when new.

That's one of the hippest album covers ever.
-
Well this series does fill a need. A large amount of the material isn't easily available anywhere else. I don't regard this label as a pirate label; there seems to be a desire simply to make rare music available so that people can actually hear it. If the owners of the originals don't like it (and it is 100% legal), then why don't they keep them in print? Dogs and mangers come to mind. This is a bit personal for me, having recently taken criticism for downloading a torrent of Cal Tjader's "The Prophet", which is utterly unavailable from Universal or eBay etc. If they reissue it, I will be glad to buy a copy. I just wanted to hear the set, which is very nice, by the way.

Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting
Shrdlu replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's a lovely collection. I first had it scattered over several LPs, each with a very short playing time. -
Insightful as always. Not intended to be. Just one guy's opinion. (By the way, I did buy all the Atlantic LPs, and made myself sit through them all.)

I didn't get into Chico and his groups back when it was all happening, but in recent years have really enjoyed all his Impulse albums. There is tremendous variety, his own groups and ad hoc session lineups both being featured. Chico is a subtle drummer, and I don't think I've ever heard him feature himself. Arnie Lawrence on alto is fantastic, and way better than a lot of out-of-tune guys from the 60s. Richard Davis plays a monster solo on one album - I think it's "The Dealer".
-
House DJ headphones do spin, lol. (Each earpiece can be pivoted, to enable quick single-ear listening to pull the next track onto the beat.)
-
Nice to see this thread come up again. The name "Bean" was given to him because of his bald head. I don't think anyone mentioned that he used to honk on the bass sax in his very early recording days. I wish that Adolphe Sax could have heard guys like Bean, Trane and so on. Surely, he would have been amazed.
-
As Ornette is now about 80 (or whatever he really is) do we now call his music "derrière garde"? Whatever, I still don't like his alto playing. I only like his trumpet playing on the session with Jackie Mac (which Miles hated, according to the interview with Chris).
-
Well, wherever you can get it. But, as I said, Ray has always been able to send me the CDs I've wanted. In the case of the old MVCJ CDs, it's unlikely that many are still available new, or even on eBay. Lol, with a session like this, the sound quality of the CD sure isn't an issue.
-
At 16 2/3 rpm, of course.
-
Mundo has always been able to supply the CDs that I have wanted from their site. In the case of this rare CD, it's surely a case of grab it from whoever can supply it. Really, though, even though I like all the late Trane when I'm in the mood, this performance is just a damn noise, lol.

Did anyone ever have a quadraphonic hifi? I have the Brandenburg Concertos in a 2 LP quadraphonic set. Wonder what they sound like on the proper equipment.
