  1. What a desparate, ridiculous idea.
  2. Not being snarky, but I think it would be easier to list those Impulse albums that were not reissued by Michael Cuscuna in this format.
  3. Why not turn it off?
  4. One B3 lick you must know is the theme of "The Sermon".
  5. The Moose has a point, though. The valve trombone is a kinda bass trumpet, the existence of an official one notwithstanding. There's a similar situation with the bassoon vis-à-vis the oboe. Isn't the bassoon a bass (or baritone) oboe? Well, no. Its fingerings and key layout are utterly different. I wish they made a bass oboe, i.e., a larger oboe with the same keywork, as the bassoon's keywork and fingerings are an absolute disaster. After all, the bass, and the other deep, clarinets have exactly the same keywork and fingerings as the regular one.
  6. Lighten up babes!
  7. Good question! I've often wondered about that. Fats Waller, who played at many of them, reflected them in several of his records, especially the big hit, "The Joint Is Jumpin'".
  8. That's wonderful! I'm really pleased for you, Stefan!

    Miles

Happy Birthday, Miles Davies! I recall listening to Jim Wilkie, from Tacoma, WA, on PRI when he said "Can you believe that it's thirty years since John Coltrane died?"
  10. I'll do it, Jim! Like many members here, I have enough material to sink a ship. I'd also love to do some electro house and trance sets for you.
  11. Lady GaGa's best song yet! "All the highest notes / Neither sharp nor flat / - The ear can't hear as high as that - / But I thought I'd please any passing bat / With my High Fidelitee." - Flanders and Swann, "At The Drop of a Hat", ca. 1960.
  12. Lol, I don't even know those tunes. Hey, I can play anything, as long as it's slow and in F or Bb.
  13. I don't know about you, but I'm very happy with 2010. There is so much excellent progressive house and trance out there, and the clubbing is way better than it was when I was in my teens and 20s. Looking for live jazz doesn't bother me anymore (I gave up years ago), because I already have all the recordings that I want. But, yeah, 1959 was a fine year for recorded jazz (Chris is right).
  14. Or, as the baby t shirt said, "I am proof that my Mom put out". (On the back, it says "at least once".)
  15. Ray Mizutani, of "Mundo", Japan, is listing the MVCJ one here http://www.mediawars.ne.jp/~mundo/collect/file/j-coltrane.html Those 20-bit MVCJs are very good, and it's a shame they are not constantly available, along with the Japanese mini-LP versions. I haven't heard this particular version, being content with the copy in the U.S. "Major Works" 2 CD set.
  16. My son does a lot of Youtubing, and that site will automatically delete any vid that has a portion of a recognizable, copyrighted song in it. How ridiiculous!
  17. I am hardly the first person to discover how lovely it is, but I'd still like to recommend Gran Canaria to all as a delightful place for a relaxing vacation. I just spent a fantastic week there, and it was the best vacation I've ever had. I'm nowhere near an expert on the island (which is one of the seven Canary Islands, and is technically part of Spain - though not the E.U.), but what I did experience was all wonderful. I was in Playa del Ingles and San Agustin, and nowhere else, apart from the airport. What does it have going for it? Why go there at all? Well, I found virtually nothing not to like. Temperature hovering about the 70-80 degree mark, hardly any rain, everything very clean and safe. Prices of everything (except housing!!) very low - hotels, meals, gifts etc. People very laid-back and friendly. It was fun to speak Spanish and German for a week - there are very many Germans there. I was hoping also to re-visit Vienna, but Playa del Ingles covered that, too, as a fantastic bonus. In the Centro Comercial Cita (Cita Mall), I was delighted to find a Cafe Wien that has a yummy Eerdbeertorte, served by a lady from Frankfurt, plus a German restaurant that was owned by a lady from Vienna and had Wienerschnitzels and Erdinger Weissbier on the menu. (Sorry, my Windows is acting up and I can't access all the Spanish accents and umlauts at the moment.) You can get by with just English there, but the locals are not terribly good at it, so a few dozen Spanish phrases would be a big help. Plus, it's a huge ice-breaker if you make an effort to speak the local language. Highly recommeded for recharging the old batteries.
  18. Apparently, it wasn't just a bird, lol.
  19. Awww, Brownie, that looks so good. Must drop by there next time I'm in Paris. A visit is long overdue. When you are in the U.K., check out the burger and drink deal at the Wetherspoon's bars - about GBP 4.95. And the Revolution chain does a great burger for about GBP 4.00 - and a free second one after 3:00 pm.
  20. Probably she was really Lorraine Gordon.
  21. I was in Paris, with my alto, in Feb 72, and I came across him playing at a bar. Wouldn't let me sit in.
  22. Great idea, Bill! They probably won't do it, but fortunately you can get (most likely) all the material on individual CDs, apart from one session, which is LP only. As there are usually no out-takes with Prestige, one can probably assemble everything that still exists. As has been said before, there are no suprises with Red but it still all sounds fantastic.

    Headphones

I just got my Lady Gaga in-ear headphones last week - they put out a special Valentine's edition, which has already gone out-of-print; some shark already has some on eBay. Anyways, these are actually by Dr Dre (forget Lady Gaga, lol), and sound absolutely amazing. Better than any headphones or speakers that I have ever heard. Dre Dre's "Monster Beats" over-the-ear headphones are said to be awesome. Has anyone tried them?
  24. It's not geekdom at all. It's a very important point. As most LPs sold at the time were mono, it's not surprising that the companies put more effort into their production. As an aside, the stereo version of Cannonball Adderley's "Domination", from much later (about 1966), sounds outstanding.
  25. Not Tiger's only accident, from what I hear. Watch all the advertising homophobes drop him, because the g-word came up.
