Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Bird and Diz (Verve)
Big Wheel replied to Guy Berger's topic in Recommendations
A "good job" doesn't cut it in this kind of company. Listen to this album too much and you might come to believe that the ride cymbal had never been invented. -
Who says you can't put a wah-wah pedal on a hurdy-gurdy?

Great, more jazz-lite is just what SF needs.

It's kinda hard to tell when I'm playing them through tiny laptop speakers.

I'm ripping a ton of mono stuff today, at space-saving bitrates. One thing I am having trouble with is determining which sessions are mono! (I'm too lazy to find and download a program which would make it visually obvious.) My problem is especially with the Riverside K2s I got in the big Fantasy sale. Some of these do have "STEREO" clearly marked on them, but others do not, even though they seem to be from years in which the recordings should be stereo (most stuff after 1959, right?) Is there a good rule of thumb to help figure out which of these sessions are stereo?

Admittedly I don't have too much firsthand knowledge of investment banks, but I think the amount given to Mack probably has something to do with the company's recent turmoil. It's the company's way of putting an exclamation point on the fact that the Mack loyalists won the battle and the company survived. So they're just giving an extra middle finger to Phil Purcell's allies.

Angelfire is also down. I just talked to someone who was having trouble logging into their Angelfire account.

You could try compressing things you don't use often into ZIP files, then decompressing when you are done defragmenting. Or, if you have a fast connection you might try using an Internet storage option. An old family friend runs this startup, which allows you to dump as much as you want remotely. Your data is held ultimately on Amazon's machines as the service uses their s3 architecture to do it.

So as usual I've waited till the last minute, and I have 60000+ miles that are going to expire tomorrow if I don't accrue any activity on my Delta SkyMiles account. I thought I was being smart by accruing miles by spending money with one of their "retail partners", FTD.com. This way I get my miles for the roughly the same price as buying them outright from Delta, plus my grandmother gets some nice flowers for her anniversary next week. Anyway, I get through the checkout process and click "place order," and I get this message saying "You have accrued 990 miles. Miles may take 6 to 8 weeks to post to your account." (It supposedly takes 3-5 days if you just buy them straight from Delta.) My miles expire tomorrow if I don't accrue any today. Has anyone had any luck dealing with their customer service, and do you think they'll be flexible in this case? I'd really rather not shell out another $30 to try and buy more miles from Delta.

John Coltrane Village Vanguard Box (this is kind of stupid, considering that they still haven't delivered my last CD from November, but whatever)

You can check out the clips at Comedy Central: http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_col...ent/index.jhtml Definitely one of the most random Reports ever.

Was this 2 months after they said it had already shipped? My CD is listed as "Shipped 11/30."

Interesting...I don't have many recordings of the "dense" variety (as opposed to things like "Interstellar Space") and I seem to remember that ripping that kind of thing did take a long time. I always assumed it was just a dirty or scratched CD. EAC does seem to hate my work computer! I'm not sure if the IT people have disabled something that EAC needs, but I can't even get the program to recognize when a CD is in the drive so I can configure it. Before I even put a disc in the drive, I run the "autoconfigure" wizard and it has a checkbox next to the line "EAC has detected the following drives in your system." Only problem is that there's nothing else there, just a checkbox. Has anyone else had problems with this kind of thing before?

They claimed that they sent me a CD over 10 days ago and it still has not arrived. Somewhere in this or another Yourmusic thread I mentioned that they sent me the single CD version of Chick's Light as a Feather when the image on their site clearly shows the 2CD version. I didn't even bother trying to exchange/return that one.

I think I may cancel right before the price change and see if they throw anything my way. What's the downside?

Game over for General Motors?
Big Wheel replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yeah, I find Surowiecki boring/obvious sometimes, but this was one that I enjoyed reading quite a bit. -
Given Guy's location, my guess it was something like this: http://www.nessa-sailing.org/

I don't know who reveres Tippin' the Scales so much. In comparison with Jackie's other sessions, I bet at least 75% of those who are familiar with it rate it no better than a C+. On the other hand, The Latin Bit and Feelin' the Spirit are just gorgeous to my ears. They aren't necessarily the deepest of the entire genre, but I could listen to Grant Green play "Brazil" all day long.

My organization has a business relationship with him and he calls us up every once in awhile. This was the first time I've spoken with him, though. Didn't get a chance to tell him that I was a fan of his Verve work, unfortunately.

I'm talking to him right now (not at all a jazz-related matter). Anything I should ask him?

Michael Richards Meltdown
Big Wheel replied to Randy Twizzle's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I don't think this was a slip. I think it was a deliberate attempt to provoke, which is something very different. If you've ever seen The Aristocrats, you know that even great, respected comedians have some nasty, nasty shit "inside" them. -
Michael Richards Meltdown
Big Wheel replied to Randy Twizzle's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
After finally watching the video, I think it's obvious that Richards owes everyone a big apology. But I don't think it necessarily "proves" that Michael Richards is a racist to the core. I see a guy flying off the handle and reaching for the biggest weapon he can find in the arsenal. Only problem: it didn't come off as funny at all, and rather than try and find a graceful out, he foolishly decided to stick with the thing and see where it led. When your entire job revolves around not being taken seriously, you're probably going to confuse even yourself some of the time. -
Michael Richards Meltdown
Big Wheel replied to Randy Twizzle's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This is a secondhand story, so take it for what it's worth. I never really could fathom before that Michael Richards was just kind of a douche, but this story is now a whole lot more plausible in light of this latest incident IMO: Around 1998 this guy I know - let's call him Seppo - was playing a solo piano gig at a famous cafe on Miami Beach. Seppo was a visiting student from Finland and for this story to make sense, you have to understand that he did almost nothing else but practice. He ate, breathed, and slept piano, to the exclusion of just about everything else in his life. Seppo was a badass, but his complete obsession with music meant that he got poor grades in every other subject and knew almost nothing of American pop culture despite having lived in the States for at least a couple of years. Anyway, Seppo is playing cocktail piano one afternoon outdoors, and this lanky guy comes up to him. He lounges against the piano, looks at Seppo, and says: "Do you know who I am??" Seppo just stares at him. "Uh..." The guy doesn't wait for a guess. "I'm Kramer." Still a blank stare. "You know, on Seinfeld." Sure enough, it was actually Michael Richards. Seppo pauses for a second and says: "Ohhhhh. Is that like Oprah?"
