The problem is that these sites are BitTorrent trackers, and are never even in possession of the material at hand. They only serve as meeting places. Some things there are completely legit and authorized. Some aren't. People here use the PM system all the time, I'm sure, for facilitating the trading this kind of stuff. Is that an argument for shutting the whole board down? If not, then what is the difference that would make this site "legit" and BitTorrent tracker sites "not legit"?

That sucks. They were incredibly strict about what could be seeded--I'm pretty sure they banned a few things that were OK under their own rules.

Some sick Booker T and Cropper on a few tracks of this one: Soul Mission

Stones Throw Records is mentioning that they are planning on releasing a "complete anthology" of the Stark Reality albums. Does anyone have any info on when this is coming out, and on what formats? (The description on their web page is vague--I can't understand if it's going to be 2 LPs, 2 CDs, or both.)

There Was a Bomb at My School Yesterday!
Big Wheel replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Very true, and it wasn't even that long ago. Didn't one of the very early Simpsons episodes feature Bart throwing a cherry bomb down the john? -
D'oh! I forgot I met (the other) Adam when he came to Boston for his 10th reunion! Great guy.

Google maps with a new addition
Big Wheel replied to chandra's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think they were taken at various times. The shots of my old street in Miami have much more realistic colors than the ones of Massachusetts. (Or maybe the Massachusetts ones were shot in autumn, and that's why everything seems to be brown.) -

Just think, when they upgrade to "Google Pentagon Satellite Maps" we'll all be able to read our own license plates... -

Glad you're ok. Clearly the kid needs to be dealt with seriously, but this sentence from the article sure did strike me as dumb: You know we've reached a new low in bureaucratic language when "learning" becomes "the school process." -
86--though I may live a good deal longer, as one of my four great-grandmothers lived to be 93 and the other on that side made it to 107...

I think I may have chatted briefly on the phone with Michael Weiss when I was the jazz director at my college radio station. Usually I got all these calls to check on airplay from people whose CDs were complete dreck, and I remember being surprised to get a call from someone whose album I actually enjoyed...

Oh yeah, we Easterners are REAL friendly. I didn't mention that the Dmitry thing was a complete coincidence--neither knew the other would be there until a review of the show/CD was posted on the board. shrugs and I got in touch before the William Parker show and planned to meet, but he left at intermission (the show kinda sucked) and we didn't manage to spot each other before that point. He had to drive all the way home from Boston to somewhere in Connecticut, I believe, so pretty understandable not to waste time getting home... As for Marla...I think I was in a hurry to split, maybe?

Hardly. I've met: JazzKitten (rarely posts these days) Trumpet Guy (see above) Kevin B Jazzshrink Stereojack In fact, ran into Kevin and Jazzshrink as I was heading out of Stereo Jack's two weekends ago! I may have also briefly met makpjazz57 (Marla) at an Eric Alexander show at Scullers a couple years back--I think Kevin and Rob introduced us, but am not 100% sure. And shrugs and I were at the same William Parker/Marshall Allen/Kidd Jordan show about 4 years ago, but didn't see each other...and possibly the same thing happened with Dmitry at the Andrew Hill "Beautiful Day" Birdland shows.

Bumping this up as I picked up a sixpack of Sapporo today in Somerville and discovered to my surprise that the bottles, and probably also those big silver cans, are brewed in Canada! This has been going on for the last couple of years as Sapporo entered into an agreement with the Canadian brewery Sleeman's. Also, Kirin, it turns out, is brewed somewhere in the States. I guess the Japanese breweries are trying to either save on transport costs or are worried that too much of the stuff gets skunked during shipping.

Getting a Whale Pregnant

Before I clicked on this thread, I assumed it was about Star Jones's recent nuptials. -
Only heard Future 2 Future once through, in the library, but was pleasantly surprised by it. I think Laswell really makes this one a success. Definitely lots of electronic stuff going on, but it's still rooted in the blues.

Pope John Paul given Last Rites
Big Wheel replied to Aggie87's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Or maybe the first led Zeppellin Pope, John Paul Jones I I think I agree with George Carlin on this one: It's time for a Pope Corky. Pope Corky IX. "I think they'd have to skip straight to nine to give him a little credibility, don't you?" -
A buddy who is an excellent jazz guitarist loves speed metal and is in awe of some of the lines the guitarists come up with. He particularly likes Slayer.

I think you might have the exchange rate backwards--US$1=Canada $1.21, which would make gas ~US$2.70 a gallon, not $4. Still expensive. Canada$390 a month for the train seems like a ton of money to me. I think the commuter rail in Boston is maybe US$100-130 a month, depending on how far out you live. (edit: turns out the most expensive commuter rail pass is $198 a month.)

Funny Rat: Could somebody explain what it's about
Big Wheel replied to TheMusicalMarine's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think you can choose the "show topics as posts" option to display the exact post that contains your search query. Then there's no need to wade through everything. -
There's also this one: http://www.doubletimerecords.com/scripts/dtr118.asp

Organ players, playing PIANO (or maybe Fender)...
Big Wheel replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Musician's Forum
That's funny, my first piano was a Chickering of roughly that age that my family got for free--sort of. The guy who owned the local music shop owed my grandparents' clothing store some money, and gave them the piano as payment instead. -

The Turbanator plays piano on the Eric Allison album "After Hours." Jim, how'd you end up with a free piano? -
Tonight was my quick "weekday dinner." Nothing special, since I'm usually too lazy to cook much; mixed greens with some of my grandma's garlic vinagrette and grated romano, plus some rice with homemade kimchi stirred in. Nothing required any preparation except for the rice.

Here's an awful story for you: As a favor I played a solo piano gig at the wedding reception of a friend's sister. My buddy was drafted into working as the wedding videographer, since the parents of the bride were being cheap. Very important fact that will be of relevance later: the reception was held at the Rusty Pelican, one of those Miami restaurants that have a small "moat" and fountains separating the restaurant from the parking lot, with a little footbridge connecting the two. Anyway, things start winding down and everyone starts packing up their stuff to go. My friend sees that I've got my backpack on (for carrying my Real Book) and asks to stick the $800 camcorder in there so he can free his hands for carrying out other stuff. I forget that my backpack's zipper is broken. If closed on the "wrong" side, the teeth gradually open. So we head downstairs to get our cars from the valet...there's a long line and we sit down outside to smoke some cigars. About 10 minutes pass and the valet calls out to me that my car is all set. At the exact moment I cross the footbridge to the parking lot, I sling my backpack over my shoulder, only to see a large object flying out from the corner of my eye. Splash! My buddy, who's 6'3", had to be held by his ankles to fish the camera out, the water was so deep. Somehow, this story had a happy ending. The tape of the whole wedding ended up being salvageable, with only one small blip, and the bride's dad managed to finagle himself a replacement camcorder for free, despite the warranty being void in case of water damage (a long story in itself). And the bride's dad didn't strangle me!
