The trouble with bringing in Wakefield for middle relief is that it means Francona is almost forced to replace Varitek with Mirabelli (after those 3 passed balls). Mirabelli's not a bad hitter, but if Varitek is coming to bat in the next inning and Lowe starts to get shaky, it could constrain Francona's options.

Ah yes. I'll never forget the deep spiritual enlightenment that was unlocked to me the day I first heard "Suck a Cheetah's Dick." (lyrics here)

Ok, last question for awhile, I promise. Now I'm getting an "unmountable boot volume" blue screen error on startup. I copied a ton of files to a CD using Easy CD Creator, but I didn't finalize the disc. Will the disc be readable on another machine? Thanks!
-
Now it's being screwy again (there's a repeated, rhythmic clicking sound coming from the hard disk). Good thing I at least got some of the stuff off.
-
I'm using Roxio right now, though without the DirectCD feature. As long as the data is there and accessible, I don't really care that much...
-
After all the stuff I just posted, I turned the computer on again just now and it seems to be working fine. I'm backing up everything important this minute, as I'm guessing whatever happened may have damaged the disk anyway.
-
This computer has a CD-R drive, I just never used it because I had so little really important data on this computer. When I was in school, I'd just back all my important stuff up on my network storage. Guess I learned my lesson the hard way.
-
Well, you weren't kidding, Claude. I just talked to ne of the main data recovery places around here and they're quoting me a minimum of $700 (and a possible maximum of $2500(!!). I think I'm probably going to just buy a new drive, then fly home in a few weeks and retransfer all the stuff I wanted from the other PC...jeez, what a hassle. I guess it's not much to pay, given that the computer was free.
-
Yeah, I had figured it was going to be a lot of $$$. Really there isn't a whole lot of crucial data on here, as this computer was functioning until the summer as a secondary machine to my desktop machine, which is now 1200 miles away from here. I copied all the files from the desktop to here. I guess the few things that aren't on the other computer aren't such a big deal. It's a well-known name brand machine, but I can't call the manufacturer to service it because of this computer's shady history. Here's the rundown: when my sister ordered a computer to go off to college, the manufacturer sent the computer to the wrong address. After two weeks she called up the company and told them it still hadn't arrived, so they sent another. In the meantime, she had tracked down the original package with the shipper, which arrived about a half mile from my house. So she calls up the company and says, "I have two computers now. What do I do?" They said, "oh, we'll send you some stickers so you can send the extra one back." Two years later, they still haven't sent the stickers, and never billed us for the extra computer. My main concern, I guess, is how I'm going to get all the software (especially WinXP) that came preloaded with this computer back onto a new hard drive. The installation packaging is all at home, 1200 miles away. My notebook knowledge, unfortunately, is close to nil.
-
Well, after some googling it looks like my main computer (a notebook) is totally FUBAR with a hard drive head failure. Has anyone here had experience with dealing with something like this with notebooks? I'm trying to get an idea of what it would cost me to recover the data and replace the drive. Nothing created on this machine has been backed up.

The Word is a great record, though it could have been even better, I think. Sometimes the album leaves me not fully satisfied, like the players are THIS CLOSE to gelling perfectly, and never quite get there. The North Mississippi All-Stars are a great band, though. I also have the Philadelphia Experiment, which I don't listen to much anymore. Interesting idea that didn't come off as well as it could have, I think. Worth checking out anyway if you are a Uri Caine fan, I guess. Then there are the Sex Mob records. The Bond record is a lot of fun. I think I might slightly prefer their latest one, though. Didn't realize Antibalas were now officially on the label. Very cool. Also interesting-looking: the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, DJ Logic, and Hal Crook records.

I dunno what he sounded like then but you can hear for yourself what he sounded like about a decade later on this here Miles Davis record.

Ok, I looked at some of the posts again. While you have a point--hardbop isn't completely dismissive of Murray and actually admits to liking some of his work--why didn't he just name the thread something like "Why is David Murray's Work So Uneven?" or even better, "What do you think of David Murray's Recorded Work?" The point of the thread still seems to be to encourage other people to sling shit on Murray for his alleged crimes against jazz. While other people here have come down on Murray, my point was that they don't go out of their way and START THREADS trashing him.
-
Which reminds me- how is our ol' buddy hardbop doing, anyway? B-) You just know he's lovin' this. Still trolling, it appears. What I don't get is WHY he does it. Does he just like getting people worked up? I mean, wading into a thread about an artist to register your own negative opinion is one thing. Starting a thread for the sole purpose of soliciting like-minded negative opinions is quite another. "Does Anyone Else Think David Murray is Overrated?" Edit: I guess there's nothing really terrible about it if it doesn't convince people to forgo giving people's music at least a try. But there's never any substantive discussion that comes out of this crap from him. I mean, we all KNOW why he really doesn't like David Murray--because he played with Don Pullen, the WSQ, and in other "out" contexts. If he at least backed it up with some real critique it might be ok--eg, "I don't like Murray's tone, and he doesn't use the large group to its full potential, and the compositions sound uninspired." But he never does; it's all about just shitting on people.

To the above I'd add the very underrated and underrecorded Yosvany Terry, who plays both tenor and alto. Jim, don't mean to beat a dead horse, but have you heard Potter's latest, LIFT? It's live at the Vanguard and IMO one of Potter's more mature records. My beef with Potter is generally that there's no vulnerability that comes through in his playing, but I do enjoy what I've heard of this one.

Glad everyone's still in one piece. Fires are scary--I can still remember the sound of my mom screaming when we had a small grease fire in our kitchen 9 or so years ago. -

I've never broken a bone, though I did slam my right thumb in a sliding glass door at the age of five. It didn't even hurt until I looked down at it to try and figure out why my hand was stuck. As soon as I saw it gushing blood, THEN I felt it. Somehow no stitches were required though I can still see the scar. -
22, ya old farts.

Turns out this show is called "Travel Sick." Tonight the guy went to Romania, had a pillow fight in Ceaucescu's old bed, and ended by drinking a smoothie made out of pig's testicles. Edit: More correct would be to say that he attempted to drink it. One or two swallows and he was puking all over the place. -

I've heard that deep cuts often aren't terribly painful because nerves are severed completely. That's why paper cuts often hurt like hell but worse wounds don't--with a paper cut, the nerve is still around to cause pain. -

BTW, after all the traffic we're supposedly getting from the "Yoko Ono naked" and Babe threads, I shudder to think of who'll show up here after googling for "bestiality"... -

There was something very similar on Comedy Central a few nights ago...only it was the host of some British show implanting bull semen into a cow in the Netherlands (I think). Pretty graphic. Later in the show they got him really messed up on hash and strapped him to one of the blades of a working windmill. -

I do like Quizno's and Schlotzky's but the prices are high enough that I left them out of my post, thinking they only halfway qualify for this thread. Schlotzky's in particular is not particularly fast--the sandwich takes quite a while to make it to the counter, in my experience. -

Screw McD's and all the other chains (except maybe Pollo Tropical down in FL). For me it's all about Felipe's and Anna's . After an encounter with a DISGUSTING chicken sandwich at BK 5 years ago--it was either partly rotten or partly uncooked or just REALLY gristly--I didn't go there again until this summer, when I was almost stranded for the night at the Kuala Lumpur airport. (It's possibly the only BK with Internet access.) I had a double Whopper with cheese and even I was surprised at how terrible my stomach felt afterwards.
