2 famous paintings stolen...
Big Wheel replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The Daily Show also made fun of it just a few days ago. -
I woke up with it in my head this morning and I can't remember the name. Looked through my CDs and nothing rang a bell. The only things that come to mind are something with Lee Morgan and maybe Hank Mobley...I checked THE RAJAH, my best guess, and it's not on there... The melody starts around a major triad...I'll just pick D even though I'm not sure what key it's actually in... Moderate Brazilian-type groove D F# A A F# D' F#' F#' D E' G' E' G (a leap of a sixth down) The harmony is, I think, just a vamp between Gmaj7 and Amin7 for those first 8 bars, but then there's a brief key change in the second 8 before heading back to the first key.

It had just better not be as bad as that Pepsi Blue shite...

btw, it's not "bnoffice", it's "bnoffce" (no 'I'). I would have killed to have had that for the radio show I produced last fall featuring Joe Gordon's music.

Kenton Presents Set Going OOP
Big Wheel replied to desertblues's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Does the Rosolino stuff on here rank among the best of his work, or is it only somewhere in the middle? I've only heard a tiny bit of this one (played the Holman tracks with Carl Perkins on my radio tribute to the latter). -
I really liked this thread back on the BNBB. I think it was titled "Stuff that Makes Life Worth Living." Will try to see if I can remember a few of mine.

Here are a couple that drive me nuts: When I go every once in awhile to my mom's house, sometimes I'll be sitting at the kitchen table working on something. My mom will walk in and say, "Would you like some orange juice/soda/milk to go with that cookie you're eating?" "Sure, thanks." "Well, then go ahead and get it. It's in the fridge." Gee, thanks for offering, Mom. Another one is the apparent belief by some corporations that their customers all have an IQ of about 6. Here's an example--when I worked for Avis Car Rental one summer, they made me complete the "Customer Service Training" program, a 10-minute presentation on their antiquated computers. The centerpiece of "customer service," according to Avis, is that you can NEVER tell a customer the word "no." In fact, pretty much any negative expression is verboten. So if a customer comes in and says they want to rent a minivan right away, and you're all out of minivans for the day, you cannot simply tell them that fact. The recommended exchange goes like this: CUSTOMER: Hi, I'd like to rent a minivan today. AGENT: You can rent an SUV. Or there are several nice mid-sized cars to choose from. CUSTOMER: Thanks, but I'd just like a minivan. And in blue, if you have it. AGENT: You can have a red Impala. We also have white Oldsmobile Aleros today. You get the idea. It takes the customer 5 times as long to ascertain the fact that THERE ARE NO FREAKING MINIVANS! If you were the customer, wouldn't you just be happier with a straight answer instead of this crap??

One of my friends has made thousands of dollars over the last few years reselling used books (he gets them at garage sales and Goodwill) on half.com. He's betting that his business will be very much affected by the merger.

Any live jazz in the Boston area Oct 18-22nd
Big Wheel replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Check out www.myrootdown.com for Boston listings. It looks like the major clubs haven't posted their entire schedules yet. -
Why is everyone going nuts about this? I don't mean to sound snotty...I was only months old at the time this was released originally, haven't listened to much in this genre, and because of my age I never understood nostalgia for the early '80s. So, why should we all be vaulting the baby carriages to pick this one up?

What I'm looking for is a specific number: how many sets, exactly, are left? If the set is just going to time out on January 1 and there are plenty left I guess there's no need for a specific number.
-
As far as I know that thread only mentions the number on the set purchased, which we're pretty sure is not an accurate reflection of the number of sets remaining. (For one thing, we don't even know for certain how many more are in this pressing.)

Damn it. Does anyone have an official count from Mosaic?

Hurricane Charlie a Catagory 4!!!!

Pretty quiet down here on the east coast. Some heavy rain last night and strong winds today, but there was a lot of sun peeking through the clouds a little while ago. I think most of the boardmembers from Florida are from around these parts (MartyJazz, Evan, Dan) so nothing to worry about. Do we have any posters from theh Gulf Coast? -
When I was in college I actually got to go through some of her and her husband's personal papers for a paper I was writing. At the same library that year I was peering through some cookbooks--and noticed on the inside cover there was a stamp that read "donated from the personal collection of Ella Fitzgerald"!

59 respondents have replied to this poll, and in total they've reported buying at least 806 boxes (probably there are many more, but I only tallied the minimum number for each poll choice). So assuming a minimum of $48 dollars a box, that's a minimum revenue to Mosaic of almost $39,000--just from the people on this thread.

The Marine Mammals, as usual. If they can recover from THIS offseason it will be more of an accomplishment than any of Marino's records.

Well, he lives on in mine every time I go in to the pantry for the greeeeeeeaze... -
WOW. Did they say if the series was to include only other Vanguard dates, or was it broader in scope?

ok, this was a fast and possibly error-filled translation, as I'm in a hurry. _________________________________________ O N T H A Z U I D A R Z A A 013 010 (new line, I guess) T H a T o l D f I s H I N g s A a , 013 010 T H A F a A I R I A s s T o l A , 013 010 T H A b o y s o f M a R k A N Edit: I totally screwed this up. Will correct after dinnertime.
-
Hm, this is getting problematic. 013 is ASCII is a carriage return, 010 is a "line feed" command. Right now I've translated the first line as "ON THA ZUIDARZ."
-
D'oh! That has to be right--there are 128 normal ASCII characters.

Here's my frequency chart of the numbers in the title bar: 079: 1 110: 3 032: 10 116: 3 104: 5 101: 11 090: 1 117: 1 105: 5 100: 2 114: 3 122: 1 013: 3 010: 3 084: 3 097: 4 111: 4 108: 2 102: 2 115: 5 103: 1 044: 2 070: 1 098: 1 121: 1 077: 1 107: 1 Based on this, 101 or 032 almost has to be the letter E if this is a cipher. Unfortunately the sample size isn't very big, so normal frequency distribution (most common letters are E,T,R,O, and so forth) probably won't apply.
