I've got a 19" Dell Trinitron CRT. After lugging the damn thing up three flights of stairs to my room every year, then putting it into storage again every May, it's all flat-panels for me from here on out!

I'm doing some research, and I was looking through this Blakey discography when I noticed that certain players have annotations next to their names if they only play on some of the tunes at a session. Sometimes it's a comma, sometimes it's a hyphen, and sometimes it's a slash. For example, Jackie McLean (as- 1, 2, 4), Lee Morgan (tpt- 4/7). Does this mean that Lee plays on tracks 4 through 7--4, 5, 6, and 7? Or is it something else?

You can listen to the man himself all day on WHRB: http://www.whrb.org . The stream can be temperamental, but the wma stream is working ok for me now.

I'm putting together a radio show featuring the music of Carl Perkins, to air a couple of weeks from now. Perkins appeared on Jim Hall's "Jazz Guitar" on Pacific Jazz (originally PJ 1227), an album which I am still trying to track down. The thing is this: the CD reissue of Jazz Guitar contained edited versions of the tunes on the original LP, and the 1963 reissue of the album, PJ/ST 79, has Larry Bunker overdubbed onto the original recordings for some reason. Would anyone be able to make me a burn or fairly high-res mp3 copies of the material that was on the original issue? I'd be happy to compensate people with a couple of CDRs of OOP material from my radio station's library. If you'd like to help out, send me a PM. Thanks!! Adam

Well, not when you're looking for OOP Mosaic Boxes and other assorted rarities, although the occasional one crops up with a low Buy it Now price every once in a while. There probably are deals to be had on Ebay but the "steal" of getting a $17 in-print CD for $5 doesn't quite match the drama of someone paying $200 for the McLean Mosaic.

Big Wheel, do not hesitate. The entire set is good, including the last two sessions. Turned out my girlfriend got me the set for Christmas. (She didn't get back from overseas until this week.) Will be checking out the music tomorrow!

Not sure what the name of that tune is but a very similar figure is played by the rhythm section on Jane Bunnett's "G.M.S. (Gandinga, Mondongo, Sandunga)" on her Spirits of Havana album, on Messidor.

Doesn't get much stranger than this one: Mayhem

I remember reading on the old board that some people weren't enamored with the last session or two on the Mitchell Mosaic. What do people here think of them? I'm on the fence on this one, with The Thing to Do coming out as an RVG in the summer, and would rather not buy a set that's got a lot of stuff I'll never listen to.

I met one of the piano players on the CD, Kenny Banks, a few months ago. That dude can play.

These are some classic Blue Note CDs recently released in Spain. Supposedly, they were only licensed to Time/Life for distribution in Spain and Blue Note's lawyers quickly ordered them yanked off store shelves when they found out they were being exported to the US. Some can still be found, though. The good things about them are that they are pretty cheap--often they're being sold for even less than midprice--and that many of the albums have been OOP domestically for years (Grachan Moncur's "Evolution" being one example). The bad thing about them is that the cover art is yucky--all of them are strangely blue-tinted, for some reason. I think the sound is generally taken straight from the previous McMaster issues, but I've never actually bought one so I'm not sure of that.

You're welcome. Thanks for posting that!

Aftab-- Did the CD I sent you arrive ok? -
Oh man, in that thread there's this pearl from Greg (my italics): But Aric responds to THAX by telling him his ex-wife was a "bleepin" whore. Having no history on the board, THAX has no idea what is going on. I don't pretend to know what THAX's exact situation was, but Aric's post was totally out of left field, totally agressive, insulting, reprehensible, etc. etc. When I point out there is no excuse for this post and tell Aric to get a hold of himself, he still fails to see a problem with what he did and starts defending it. THAX will never come back. How many lurkers has Aric scared away I wonder? What thread has he contributed to in a positive, insightful way? Why do we have to read, and now look at his graffiti contributions to the board? Priceless.

Any chance we could get a playlist posted here? I thought I heard Hank about 20 minutes ago but wasn't sure who it was.

Sorry, I have to disagree with this. I've never driven a GM car from the 1980s. My job at the car-rental agency was in 2001 and the vehicles in the fleet couldn't have been from much earlier than 1999. The cars I drove were the Chevrolet Prizm, Malibu sedan, and Cavalier, the Oldsmobile Alero and Intrigue, the Pontiac Grand Am, and a few others. None of them, with the possible exception of the Alero, came close to the handling ability of Toyota's Camry, Avalon OR Prius, as well as Honda's Accord sedan. Most of them couldn't touch the first car I drove, a 1989 Acura Legend which had 90,000 miles on it when I started driving it! As far as I'm concerned, apparent "bias" in public opinion has its roots in reality.

I think the jury is still out on the reliability of hybrid cars. It's simply too early to tell. But Toyota and Honda are backing the hybrid components with big (10yr/100,000 miles in the case of the Prius) warranties, and given those companies' reputations I'm not worrying too much about it. Pricewise, they are pretty expensive for their size but less so if you consider the $2000 low-emission vehicle tax deduction you can take on them. Hopefully the federal government will renew that deduction in future years. Also, I'm guessing they will get cheaper as more of them are made. As for power...I'm not gonna lie, the Prius doesn't quite have the oomph of something else of comparable weight. However, I find that there are only a few occasions when I really miss the extra acceleration (generally I'm a little more careful when passing cars at freeway speeds). Plus, I try not to push the car too hard when I can help it, for the sake of optimizing gas mileage. At speeds up to 55 mph or so, there really is no difference that I can see in power. Can't tell you a thing about Saturns other than that I haven't heard anyone really bitching about theirs.

I'm a big fan of Japanese vehicles. One summer I worked a few weekends at a car-rental agency. Got to drive about half the GM line, which was almost exclusively made up of pieces of total crap. (If there's a car waiting for me in Hell, it's gotta be the Oldsmobile Intrigue. Haven't driven a Saturn but they sound like an exception.) Hondas and Toyotas just feel so much better on the road, and they're more reliable to boot. So they're boring and soulless. If I want soul in my driving experience, I'll put some Bobby Timmons in the CD player. My grandfather lets me tool around in his Toyota Prius (a gas/electric hybrid) when I go home for breaks. Now that is a hell of a machine. I cannot say enough good things about it. My first car is almost certainly going to be a hybrid vehicle of some kind, if I can afford it.

Ok, you're gonna laugh, but...how about the Honda Element? The specs I checked indicate it's got similar room to the Forester. And the EX model's supposed to have a nice stereo. (My college job working for a company dealing with all things automotive is good for something, I guess.)
-
Since you've been checking out Subarus, did you look at the Legacy wagon? My guess is that the head and leg room would be comparable to the Forester's.

Why don't we make it interesting and flip a coin?

One other place you can find the version I mentioned is in the closing credits to the movie "Analyze This." Not sure much that cut's been edited for length in the movie, but it's at least a quick way you can check to make sure that's the song you're looking for, if you happen to know someone who owns the movie.
