Been spinning this quite a lot over the past couple of days. I like this one more than the Bond album. There's this one style that Bernstein has really made his own over the years--kind of a New Orleans rock 'n' roll jam, but with a lot of stuff going on in the background--and they bust that particular groove out on "Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand," the highlight of the disc as far as I'm concerned. The band absolutely tears the roof off by the end of that cut. Other personnel besides the core quartet: Roswell Rudd, Peter Apfelbaum, Brian Mitchell on wurlitzer, Doug Wieselman (cl), Marcus Rojas on tuba and Haitian trumpet (does anyone know what a Haitian trumpet is?), Dave Tronzo on slide guitar, Scott Robinson (slide saxophone, acl), John Kruth (mandolin), and Mark Stewart on something called "inventions" on the aftorementioned highlight.

Saw her live w/Jensen at the Stanford Jazz Workshop in 1998. A good show iirc.

Very true, at least as far as the main texts are concerned. Marx saw historical materialism (the feudalism-->industrial capitalism-->communism progression) as immutable as Newton's laws of motion. However, Marx also had some interesting things to say about Russia. For some reason, Marx encouraged Russian radicals in the late 19th century (I think it was the Decembrists my prof was talking about but I'm not 100% certain). He liked their commitment to the cause and suggested that it just might be possible to skip a step or two and go straight to communism in Russia from the czarist feudal/agrarian order. Something like that. I apologize for being sketchy on sources but I do remember it coming out of my prof's mouth at the beginning of his class on Soviet history three years ago.

Should I email them and demand a commission? For more twisted Monk interpretations, check out the Brilliant Coroners. Their thrash-metal version of "Brilliant Corners" rules.

Don't mean to rain on the parade, but these words were not actually penned by George Carlin--see here for details.

ex-DHQ? Who's playing with Holland now?

Hang in there! We went through Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and were without power for about 10 days (not fun in 95 degree heat in August). If you're located inland, I wouldn't worry too much about flooding, but high winds could still be a problem--make sure you have plenty of batteries and water on hand in case the power goes.

Besides Roche's great contribution, that solo of Gonsalves's once they go into the slow section is NASTY. Not to mention the ending!

I think I might have gotten an email from the Zeitgeist saying the Tin Hat Trio gig was canceled. -
Frankly, I think the Sandoval disc is terrible. One of the worst jazz cds I've heard in years, copycat bullshit from beginning to end.

Hey, today's Bill Fenohr's birthday. He hasn't posted since March...anyone know if he's doing ok?

Universal Music to Cut CD Prices to Under $13
Big Wheel replied to Claude's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Come on guys, you didn't know that Universal starts their fiscal year on June 3? That would make today the first day of the fourth month... -
Oh, and let me guess--it was McDonough who panned it in Downbeat, wasn't it?

I haven't heard The Next Step, but this was one of my favorites of the year. Have only listened to it all the way through a couple of times, but man, those tunes and textures are wonderful, both spiritual and unsettling at the same time. It bears mentioning that before I heard this record, I was a skeptic on Rosenwinkel who couldn't understand why every guitar player I knew was making such a fuss about him.

Huh, I hadn't even heard this was coming out. Russ Gershon is a character. I enjoyed their last one, "Afro-Cubism", quite a bit.

Well, I blew it. September is here and I failed to take advantage of this sale...just didn't have the cash for it this time around. Anyway, I still need to give a fair listen to what I already have!

Idrees Sulieman is also on trumpet. Personally, I think this session is underrated. The trio version of "How Long Has This Been Going On" is beautiful, and everyone cooks on the closing blues "Tommy's Time." I find myself pulling this one out often at times when I need to unwind.

Hey, can't blame a man for tryin'.

Mark, if you end up not liking the disc, PM me and I'll gladly take it off your hands.

You're welcome. The bus company I prefer is Travel Pack: http://www.travelpackusa.com . The Fung Wah company is also good. You can catch both of these around the intersection of the Bowery and Canal St. The Fung Wah ticket office is right on the intersection and can't be missed, the Travel Pack window is a block or so north on the Bowery. If you can't find it, chances are if you are standing around there looking confused, there will be a guy who will see you and point you in the right direction. That's what happened to me last time, anyway. Both buses leave from right around the corner (I think it's Hester St.). Are you coming to Boston for business or for pleasure? There are some great shows coming up in September.

What really gets me is that they actually say that there's FOUR servings in these suckers. FOUR servings!! I'm sorry, there's ONE serving! One sit-com's worth of ice cream. And about 200% of your daily sat. fat intake. I don't eat this stuff anymore, but I really loved the "Chubby Hubby"-and now I am one. You think that's bad? I get the stuff FREE through my job. What I usually do is eat about 3/4 of a pint in one sitting, then I'll be grossed out at how much I've eaten, but hey, what's the point of just leaving that little bit in there? So 10 minutes later I'll finish the rest of it. If anyone's in Boston and wants some free ice cream, PM me and I'll hook you up. The more you have, the less there is to tempt me!

Ray Bryant is way up there too, as is Herbie Hancock (although he rarely shows it on records).

Anyone know how many sets are left for the Hamilton?

NASA moonwalk footage revealed!

A similarly themed series can be found here (note: most of the cursing is censored). The third episode is my favorite by far.
