  1. Seriously, there's quite a bit of discussion about this very topic on the thread (link) I've quoted here, and posted above. The two Eddie Henderson leader dates on Capricorn (compiled together on one CD) are my favorite of this kind of music, even above Herbie's own material. See the thread above for a more detailed discussion. Cheers!! I haven't heard the Hendersons, but from descriptions it seems they sound more like Herbie's pre-Headhunters material. Hence, I am not sure they are a good recommendation. Weather Report from 1973 to 1976 might fit the bill. They definitely do the improvisation-over-funky-grooves thing. What about the Crusaders' early 70s music? I haven't heard a lot of it. Guy
  2. Nobody especially interesting, except that so far I've outlived the Big Bopper by 37 days. Guy
  3. I think Herbie's Thrust is better than Headhunters, but in a similar style. Guy
  4. I do. Guy
  5. Itunes already sells some albums that are not available as hard copies. Guy
  6. These guys are mentioned in Stuart Nicholson's Jazz Rock book. I haven't heard them. Frankly, the description makes them seem like a 2nd tier 80s Weather Report. (i.e., Not promising.) Is any of their stuff worth checking out? Guy
  7. TARKUS ! Wasn't that the one with the Armadillo on the cover with tank tracks? Regularly cited as one of the worst albums ever. I'm sure albums like this spurred on the advancement of punk rock no end. Yeah, that cover is hilarious. As far as the album -- the suite is actually damn good, especially the instrumental bits. Give it another listen. Side 2, on the other hand, is quite bad. As far as ELP being pretentious -- yeah, I guess. But I've never been bothered very much by that label. Their sin was making lots of music that hasn't held up, not taking themselves too seriously. (And I have to imagine that any band making music so over-the-top did it tongue-in-cheek at least some of the time.) My favorite ELP album is the first one -- "The Three Fates" (!!!), "The Knife Edge" (or whatever the Janacek-derived piece is called), "Take a Pebble", "The Barbarian". Nice stuff. Guy
  8. I thought UK was a mediocre band. Guy
  9. Maybe she checks in once a day or once a week or once a month and reads through various threads. Maybe she has nothing to contribute to the music threads because there is so much knowledge here already. Maybe she prefers to lurk (like a lot of people do here). And when she finds something to comment on, she does. How would you know? In any case, isn't that the whole point of a forum? Does one have to chime in on every thread to be taken seriously or deserve to post in certain threads? I still don't see why it matters. Amen. Though it was kind of weird when she played the race card against Dan. Guy
  10. I just got back from the Warriors-Jazz game. The Warriors kicked their butts (and in less than 100 pts)! Utah looked awful -- Kirilenko, Okur, and Boozer all had miserable games. Still, it's easy to see why they are so dominant -- they definitely have the sizeable, talented frontline. Nice to see the W's snap their winning streak, even if it will resume on Monday against the Spurs. When is Baron coming back? Who knows. Guy
  11. Oh, he was doing some Blindfold Test thing and they played him a cut off that album and he went batshit, talking about how "they shit on Ellington! They shit on Duke!" or some looney-tooney crap like that. Same as his infamous comments about Braxton in a similar context many years earlier, only his sense of "outrage" was even more f-ed up because he'd had more than enough time to figure stuff out and obviously hadn't. God, what an idiot. Doesn't look like I'll be checking out his music any time soon. Guy
  12. Good luck to David, Aric and Lon's wife. Health problems are no good but hopefully next Thanksgiving will be a better one. Guy
  13. I saw this last night. It was a very good movie and definitely exceeded my expectations! Guy
  14. Revisiting this thread from day 1, did you originally write "latex"? MG It's a Seinfeld reference. Hilarious sequence. Guy
  15. I like Greg Lake in certain contexts, but Emerson was IMHO the best part of the band and easily the most interesting musically. Guy
  16. I went somewhat berserk at Tower's 40% off + 5 for the price of 4 sale. (Only "somewhat" -- I only picked up 10 cds.) The following cost me $88.89: Art Ensemble of Chicago, Fanfare for the Warriors Albert Ayler, Spiritual Unity Gil Evans, Out of the Cool Jan Garbarek, Witchi Tai To Charlie Haden, Liberation Music Orchestra Charlie Haden & Hank Jones, Steal Away Roy Haynes, Out of the Afternoon Paul Shapiro, It's In the Twilight Archie Shepp, Four for Trane Bobo Stenson/Anders Jormin/Paul Motian, Goodbye
  17. At least through tonight, the Mountain View and Campbell (CA) Towers have a 40% off sale PLUS 5 for the price of 1. I was able to buy 10 cds for under $90. However, the Campbell Tower's jazz section is somewhat thin at this point. (Still worth looking at...) Guy
  18. - Space Is the Place, p. 352 As a listener, NEVER be too hip. Guy
  19. Mike, Is this a good album? Guy
  20. I imagine things got a little awkward with Rick Wakeman. Guy
  21. chewy, What made you ask these guys specifically about Big John Patton? FWIW, from Emerson's web page: Guy
  22. A long time ago Michael Fitzgerald sent me a file (link?) with all the jazz references in Emerson's work with ELP and the Nice. Needless to say, there were a lot. As far as ripping people off, ELP was busted for that early on. ("The Barbarian") Guy
  23. These guys haven't been discussed much on this board, so I've been somewhat wary of checking them out. Are they good? Which records do you recommend? I like (but don't love) David Murray's playing. I'm only slightly familiar with Bluiett and have never heard Lake or Hemphill. edit: How is Hemphill's solo stuff? Guy
  24. You've already eaten half your turkey? Guy
