  1. I don't read it that way. I think Ethan means that's when Motian's "mature style" finally starts to emerge.
  2. It's interesting that the sports community gets so worked up about steroid use in baseball, but is mostly indifferent to head injuries in football. Guy
  3. I guess I just take it for granted that the NFL (and the viewing public) are indifferent to the health impact of the sport. The above is just par for the course. Guy
  4. Not sure they were a good match... Larry was a better fit with the post-Coltrane saxophonists.
  5. Ethan Iverson's commentary
  6. Is the Berne a solo disc?
  7. It's a real shame that the Lowell Davidson trio recording mentioned in the interviews is lost... would love to hear that. Guy
  8. A list of favorite recordings featuring Paul - no attempt to be "representative": 1. "War Orphans" from Tribute 2. "Re: Person I Knew" from Bill Evans 3. "It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago" from Trioism 4. "Remembrance of Things Past" from Trioism 5. "Mumbo Jumbo" from Sound of Love 6. "You Took the Words Right Out of My Heart" from Live at the Village Vanguard 7. "Yahllah" from Live at the Village Vanguard 8. "Harmony" from I Have the Room Above Her 9. "Three in One" from I Have the Room Above Her 10. "Cathedral Song" from Lost in a Dream
  9. Thanks for posting that one. I thank you also same here.
  10. Very sad, though I was worried given his recent absence from the Vanguard where in recent years he seemed to play every month. I first got into Paul's playing via Keith Jarrett's American quartet, then began investigating his work as a leader. I saw him with Lovano and Frisell a bunch of times, but also with a few other lineups. He was also an interesting composer. RIP. Guy
  11. He's probably confusing it with the first two tracks from Paris, which I don't think were previously available.
  12. got my copy from importcds. Thanks Hans!
  13. I have the Rostropovich on EMI.
  14. I've been meaning to mention this and keep forgetting - a few weeks ago I saw someone walking with a Uniqlo bag that had the cover from Jan Garbarek's SART!!! (Great album by the way)
  15. Listened to this for the first time this morning. WOW. Highly recommended to fans of early 70s Miles, early Weather Report, Priester's Love Love, etc.
  16. Whatever else you do, don't mention the war. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it all right.
  17. I've been doing a lot of reading on the train. One book I just finished and loved is Simon Sebag Montefiore's "Stalin: Court of the Red Tsar": I guess I am in an inter-war mood - I am currently about halfway through Kafka's "The Trial", and after that I have Richard Evans's "Rise of the Third Reich" on deck. I love the kindle!
  18. Digging through my massive backlog of never-listened-to CDs and got to this one over the past week. I like it, and Konitz's playing on it. But Haden is so low in the mix, it's ridiculous. Mehldau doesn't bother me on this as much as he bothers others on this thread, though I agree that another pianist would probably have been better.
  19. Jon, can you clarify - amazon says they have none in stock right now. Do you mean you just sent them some and they should have it in stock soon? Guy
  20. STOOPID question. I sat on my butt and haven't purchased this yet? Are all 1,500 copies sold already?!?! Which vendors still have it in stock?
  21. For what it's worth, there are 2 sets of this quintet from Paris (11/3/69) that have some of the best music they ever made. Worth seeking out. Guy
  22. Our puppy, Henry, got bitten by another dog this AM while my girlfriend was walking him. She took Henry to get stitches on his ear and I am sure he'll be alright, but it's a little upsetting. This makes me re-evaluate bringing Henry to the local dog park. (Even though he wasn't bitten there.) We started taking him there and some of the dogs can be a little rough. About a week ago he was attacked by a boxer who fortunately didn't puncture any skin. Otherwise Henry is doing great. He's a generally well-behaved pup who likes to play with other dogs (though he is very particular about who he wants to play with) and loves saying hello to people. He found his first experience with snow to be extremely excited but is still scared of large objects (such as the floor lamp we installed yesterday) and large plastic bags. Guy
  23. I found this great interview with Robin Kelley in which he addresses this topic:
  24. Someone on this board once noted Jackie's debt to Dexter as a player - that was a major epiphany to me as a listener.
