Happy Hanukah, folks.

There's a Motian-Bley duets CD, "Notes", that was released in the 80s or 90s on Soul Note. The two have also collaborated on numerous other albums (with other musicians in the lineup) so it could be from one of those.

RIP, Enrico Palazzo (The opening scene of the first "Naked Gun" is among the funniest cinematic sequences I have ever seen... brilliantly lampooned on Family Guy.) -

Sadly, the scan I underwent today in SFO was far less racy than Fox News and Matt Drudge had led me to expect! Guy -
That album...you talk about an iron fist in a velvet glove, this is it. Nothing "easy" going on here...sort of an unheralded masterpiece, I think. Yes... great album! Jimmy reminds me of Sonny Rollins on one of the tracks, but that could be just because he's playing tenor over bare-bones rhythm. What other pre-Fusion/Thesis albums do you guys recommend? Guy

Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Blue Coronet 1969
Guy Berger replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
I don't see the difference, a bootleg is a bootleg and the rule here is "no linking bootlegs", period. No exceptions. There's nothing zealous about it. Yes... but someone reading this thread can pretty quickly go to amazon, do a search and get it anyway. Aside from imposing a miniscule cost on the reader, delinking achieves little. Furthermore, one of the main reasons for preventing links to bootlegs - protecting the owners of this site - is not germane here. Anyway, either way, not really a big deal. Guy -
Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Blue Coronet 1969
Guy Berger replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
At the risk of getting too arcane, are you sure that it's a Rhodes electric piano at that point and not the Wurlitzer (or any other model)? Or were you using Rhodes as the generic for "electric piano" such as Kleenex for "tissue" or Scotch Tape for "cellophane tape"? Miles was using the Fender Rhodes on the road during this period. Guy That seems like a tenuous line being applied here. Who's to say this is an illegal bootleg? The original link was to Amazon. It shows it as an import from the label Ais. It's even being offered with Free Super Saver Shipping. I'm sure if Amazon was aware it was selling illegal goods, it would shut the page down, no? Nothing tenuous here. It is a bootleg. Miles was under contract with Columbia at the time, and the rights are now owned by Sony. I don't know why CDs with unauthorized material are being sold by Amazon, but the fact that CDs like this set are being offered with Free Super Saver Shipping doesn't say anything about the legality of the items. While I am sympathetic to the general rule of "no bootleg links" on this board, this seems to be an overly zealous application of that rule. That said, I think most people can figure out from this discussion how to search amazon for the recording in question. Not to mention all the other wonderful ways to acquire it, many of which do not involve paying $$$ to bootleggers. Guy -
Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Blue Coronet 1969

The 11/5/69 date has two sets. During "Bitches Brew" at the beginning of the 1st set, the electric piano breaks down. Chick eventually comes back with the acoustic piano for the piano solo of that tune. Then, they play post-bop material for the remainder of the set - "Paraphernalia", "Nefertiti", "Masqualero". By the 2nd set the electric piano is working again. I've only listened to the 7/27/69 date once and don't remember it that well. -

I would disagree... the fall material is the best, the band got better collectively over time. However, the Blue Coronet stuff is probably more likely to appeal to fans of straight-ahead jazz. To my recollection the best-sounding of the early lost quintet gigs (before the Antibes concerts in July) is from the Village Gate, in April or May. The starter kit I would recommend for this lineup: Both Antibes concerts (July 25th and 26th) Rome (October 27th) Rotterdam (November 9th) -

Yes. One question about the radiation issue - how substantive is this scientifically? How does it compare to the radiation you incur flying around on an airplane? Guy -

I think the whining about this is silly/stupid and find it ironic that of all the changes in our lives post-9/11, this is the one that has generated the most outrage. -
Joe Henderson Trio at the Village Vanguard
Guy Berger replied to Durium's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
To follow up on Mark's point - there are lots of other Joe H recordings from this period circulating in "unofficial" format. How do they compare? He sounds relatively restrained compared to his 60s/70s recordings, but was that just him getting older? Guy -
Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Blue Coronet 1969

Set 1: This/Agitation/No Blues/Paraphernalia Set 2: Gingerbread Boy/Paraphernalia/Miles Runs the Voodoo Down/Masqualero/Walkin' It's a shame that there aren't more club dates from late 1969 - I think Miles kept playing the older repertoire until pretty late and this is not really reflected in the (phenomenal) European recordings from the fall. -
I never owned the original 2 CD set, but I did pick up the 7 CD box last year and have been gradually wending my way through it since the summer. I'm 5 CDs in and this is really magical music. I've heard Getz music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s and, while I like it, none of it comes close to matching the depth of this stuff. Guy

As far as Eicher stockpiling sessions, it is fairly common for him to release stuff that's several years old. I don't know how much studio stuff he sits on for a long time (though they've issued live occasions "well after the fact"). Haven't some of the recent boxes included material not originally released?

Thanks for the rec, Clem. Will check it out. Guy -
I'm pretty skinny and a cardio-freak so I don't have any serious issues, but I have reached the age where I can't eat anything I want anymore. One thing I've found for those with a sweet tooth like myself is to replace candy or soda with fruit. Those still have the sugar (and tartness for those like me who like that), but are at least much better for you. Guy

Keith Jarrett's trio performed "Chelsea Bridge" - you can hear it on the album Whisper Not. The first version I heard of this lovely tune.

Charles Lloyd also has a great version. Earlier Lacy played Johnny Come Lately with Cecil Taylor at Newport. When I saw Lacy live in duet with Danilo Perez, he played "Morning Glory", with much feeling. Can't say that I see any sense in anybody else trying to play this one, not really, not as long as that recording can be heard. Except that Stan Getz did a great version on his 1987 live album "Anniversary" (with Kenny Barron).

I'm sure just like most recordings put out by these labels, this is a download off one of the torrent sites - and if purchasers are lucky, a version that one of the torrent contributors remasters and speed-corrected. Anyway, the music is terrific - just like everything else this unit did. -

I know these are boring answers, but Coltrane and Dolphy are the top two on my list. Herbie Nichols, too. -
Haden is commanding on the first two Paul Motian albums, playing in a free-ish mode.
