Saw the SF Jazz Collective last friday night. Robin Eubanks and Avisha Cohen has been replaced by Louis Bonilla and a young trumpeter who won the 09 monk competition. It was a homecoming (albany, ny) for stefon harris. Their latest thing is playing the compositions of Horace Silver. Unfortunately, imho, that night they sucked the like out of his music.

So I made it down for the Thursday concerts with a few friends. Starting at 7 PM, Muhal Richard Abrams performed solo for approx. 50 minutes seemingly nonstop. That is, not allowing for what seemed to be intended use of space/silence. Not familiar enough with his music to identify the tune-For all I know it was simply free improvisation-and it was great. The second act was to be fred anderson with chad taylor. That obviously did not go off. Instead they had 10 minutes of silence for fred and moved on. The Lifetime Trio went next, joseph jarman, rob garcia on drums and johh ehlis on guitar. Jarman wove in comments about both Fred and Muhal. Also sang two songs. Ehlis was a suprise. He seemed to be able to play any style. At one point I dozed off (did I explain that I drove 3 hours to get there and that I usually go to sleep around 8-9 PM?) when I woke up a very tall distinguished looking older man was playing tenor. Shit I thought it looked like John Tchicai. And it was him!!!!!!!! Very Cool despite the lack of a/c and the temp inside being around 85 degrees. The whole set was under an hour. The final act came on-Abrams with Harrison Bankhead on bass and Ari Brown on sax. Again seemed to be doing free inprov for an hour. Great stuff. And except for the emotions with Fred's passing, a great evening. Drove home, got 4 hours of sleep and went to work with a smile on my face. For somebody approaching 60 not bad.

I have spoken with a "Fred" at Mosaic off and on for quite a while.

It should be noted that the carter/bradford box set includes "Seeking" which has been available on the various Hat labels for a while. I have that disc but still intend on getting the set.

I am planning to go with some friends for the concerts on the 24th including the ones for muhal richard abrams. would be my first time hearing him in concert.

Drove over to Pittsfield, Ma last night to see Randy Weston appear with Alex Blake on bass. He was being honored by berkshiresjazz.org for his contributions to the berkshire 50 years ago and to jazz since. Got his break working at the Music Inn where he was hired to wash dishes. My first time seeing Weston. He is very articulate and speaks and appears like a man 20 years younger than his 84 years. Played two sets both shy of one hour. Some of the tunes you could expect, Little Niles and Berskhire Blues. Also performed The Healer, African Sunrise and African cookbook amongst others. Blake was interesting. He sits while playing the bass. And he plays it almost like a guitar at time with considerable use of strumming and slapping with this right hand. Good time

a question for those that have received any of the first four sets, what is the treatment of the boxes? are they the number of cds in jewel cases with the original liner notes contained within a cardboard box? do they have some sort of booklet that adds material not in the original liner notes?

with curtis fowlkes on trombone, goldberg on clarinet, scott amendola on drums, and charlie hunter on guitar. saw them at a club in albany, ny that usually presents rock/prog. apparently they are on a small east coast tour ending up at the jazz standard in nyc in about 7 days. next up is the iron horse. about 90 minute set. while they have a cd out, fowlkes appeared to be a little unfamiliar with the music. amendola and hunter were a tremendous rhytmn section. set up groove that goldberg and fowles could ride on. goldberg's writings were interesting. I would see them again and may drive to the iron horse to do so

saw parker in a duo with ned rothenberg about a 10 days ago in amherst, ma. first time seeing parker. was never overly impressed with his recorded music. making me go back and listen to his cds that I kept.

Evidently, at some point the rights to the music reverted to chapin's widow since the label issuing the set is not knitting factory but chapin's. check out www.thomaschapin.com. I wonder if the set comes with the same booklet as was provided by knitting factory

I recently did a day trip to boston/cambridge. in eight hours, I hit: cambridge: planet records, newbury comics (harvard square), stereojacks, twisted village, looney tunes, and cheapo records. avoided in your ear. had a short conversation with stereojack. boston: newbury comics on newbury street and looney tunes on boylston. can't say what hurt more-my head or my wallet

just to be clear, there is a difference between what was planned to be issued, i.e., 5,000, and what was actually issued. As I recall, the two Vee-Jay sets had really low numbers that were issued-around 2,000. And the Kid Ory set had a really low number before that licenses apparently timed out. Mosaic has never publically disclosed the actual number of sets issued per each release. So, looking back at the list of out of print sets, one cannot assume how easy it may be to pick-up a set since it is not known how many were actually sold. Also, "rare" as it applies to Mosaic may have a different meaning depending on the media you want. if you do not differentiate between lps and cds, then no problem. But if you want cd sets only, then some of the really early sets that were issued in both lps and cds, are really rare and expensive, i.e., the ammons/lewis.
