  1. I saw what was probably my first jazz concert at the Cellar Door circa 1970/1971. It was Herbie Mann with an incredible band. I remember the whole band coming down off the stage and snacking around the tables.
  2. I disagree with shrdlu. The bottom has not dropped out of the mosaic market on ebay. while not pulling in as many bucks as they regularly did a few years ago, I think one can say that mosaics will generally pull in double the retail price in approximately 12 months from when they officially go out of print. there are exceptions to this statement which constitutes part of the difference between the current market and what it was afew years ago. Some interim is necessary and explainable to allow everybody who did buy mosaics for investment purposes to sell them off on ebay to those who did not know about mosaic or were not able to buy the box sets before they went out of print. This may be part of the reason why the fullers and the rivers sets are not going for double their retail price-it has not been a long enough time for the market to absorb the those that were bought for resale in relationship to the respective demand for them. For that matter, the fuller and maybe the rivers have not been out of print for quite a year yet. on the other hand, boxes like the hamilton and the phillips do quite nicely. Perhaps the availability of japanese and domestic reissues of all or part of the individual releases that make up the boxes might impact the demand for some boxes. And not all labels have been as aggresive as blue note in reissuing product domestically, i.e., verve. want to bet that the few stuff smiths that go on ebay go for considerably more than retail? as for other sets based on blue note that have been out of print for more than a year, they seem to draw decent prices. didn't a morgan set recently go for over $200 recently? at $50 per disc that is nothing ot sneee at. on the other end of the spectrum are the sets that were released to other retailers, like the kenton set, ebay auctions for which regularly end up right around its retail price or less with a few exceptions. that said, investing in mosaics is not going to put your kid through school. however, it can defray the cost of future mosaic purchases
  3. when the stuff smith went out so quickly, I asked about specific sets that seem to be of the same vintage including the mobley. I was told it was not likely to be put on running low in the near future because their license was for 7500 copies
  4. alexander-you might be able to see her live since she lives close to the capital region-that is in cobleskill. the eighth step brings her in every other year or so, the van dyck occassionally books her, and various venues in the catskills will have her host a date, i.e., the rosendale cafe in kingston. also, she is on the umass summer jazz faculty so she participates in their concerts in july
  5. BFRANK_what connection was there, is there between rhino on the west coast and the rhino store that has been in several locations in the general catskill area of upperstate new york? there is currently one store in new paltz, ny
  6. friday I was told there were about 150 mitchell sets left.
  7. following ed swinnich's lead, I am considering getting discs 2 and 4 from mosaic, can anyone give me a quick run down of which sessions are included on these discs? the mosaic web site still has the discography however that does not indicate which sessions are on which discs. I figured out that the session with carl perkins on piano is on disc 2-what else is on that disc-the gillespie session? and does disc 4 have all of the the material with shirley horn? judging from a note on the discography, it would appear that disc 3 has the entire session with oscar peterson.
  8. billie holiday remastered columbia material on a cbs 10 cd box set-sealed $50.00 plus tax. chrome-where did you go into the borders outlet store? around cleveland or michigan or someplace else? the last time i was at the 4 borders outlet store that ring cleveland last fall I thought that their musical stock has gone down dramatically in quality. anybody interested in the smithsonian 5 cd box set on jazz singers? can get them for around $30.00
  9. mosaic-complete nat king cole on capitol box set of 18 discs-discs were new-shrink wrapped- with booklet and box. box was not wrapped-has some crinkled corners -$60.00 plus tax. barry harris plays barry harris-used cd-EPM reissue of xanadu date-$1.00 plus tax george benson-one of blue moon's subsidaries' reissue of the cafe caribe concert in plainfield new jersey-apparently includes all of the material-about 130 minutes worth-2 cds new-$10 plus tax
  10. the really strange thing about that hamilton auction is that there is a second one that ends a day earlier that is half the price. one would think that, at this point, the earlier auction would have the larger price. plus there is no cross over in the bidders from one auction to the next.
  11. It may have to do with the timing of events and how the license agreement was written, i.e., the license was given to manufacture the sets. apparently mosaic did not know that they had a problem until they went to manufacture their next batch to sit on their shelves. recognizing that the teddy wilson has a lower catalogue number than the smith, and assuming that the license for that one is over five year as probably the smith was, I asked mosaic this morning whether they could continue to sell the wilson. I was told yes though it was mentioned that the wilson set would probably go on the "running low" list later this year. In other words, MOsaic was not going to manufacture another batch. currently, there are over four hundred wilson sets available.
  12. strange, I just talked to mosaic this morning and they said that there are 272 of the blue mitchell set left and 212 of the atlantic new orleans set.
  13. perhaps this might be considered "rude," and if so, I apologize in advance. has anybody here been checking out this other board-freejazz.org. just came across it.
  14. I got the capital studio recordings box from my mom and found (j R music) and bought for myself the ellington reprise set

  16. Appearing at the Van Dyck in Schenectady, NY next week: The Dewey Redman Quartet - December 19 - $15.00 One of the last of the great tenor saxes, with John Menegon from Woodstock on bass and special guests. http://www.ejn.it/mus/d_redman.htm
  17. After wondering about the question as to whether Dee Dee Bridgewater gets me hot or not, it seems rather mundane to ask fellow board members whether they recommend a source for sleeves for cds. in advance, thanks.
  18. Just wanted to alert all nick brignola fans, that the reservoir label has put out a recent live disc which represent all or most of the material from the sweet basil concert of a decade ago from which one disc's worth of music was already released.
  19. cadence handles philology. I would think you would be able to get this cds from them.
  20. I spoke with mosaic a couple days ago and they had slightly over two hundred of this ellington box set in stock. and then there are the copies sitting out in brick and mortar stores or other places like collector's choice. byw-they had only nineteen of the chico hamilton sets. can't remember how many jacquet though I think it was more than thirty and less than one hundred.
  21. how about the von freeman live date recently released? sounds pretty good to me
  22. how about that live date on leo with the disney tunes? if that funny or what? not actually a arkestra date but I like sun ra's piano on billy bang's tribute to stuff smith on sould note/black saint

  24. funny, I just finished reading sudhalter's book about white jazz players. sudhalter holds purvis in high esteem
