  1. I thought the movie was pretty good. Supposed to be a spy movie but not like "Smiley's People". Impressive cast with Bill Nighy, Alice Krige, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, and Rachel Weisz. Nighy plays the main character who collects art and loves jazz.
  2. I also live in the capital region of new york where Nick made his home. Saw him numerous times. He usually brought an arsenal of horns to his local gigs, e.g., baritone, soprano, clarinet, alto. A really sweet guy but with an edge to him. Could and would play with anybody. For example, I saw him appear with Tisziji Munoz, the guitarist that played with Pharoah Sanders. (For quite a few years, Tisziji lived in the Capital Region). If Nick appeared with a horn player, there was usually some sense of competition, which for me comes through on those two Beehive sessions. I always imagined that Nick would have done well in one of those old time cutting sessions. Miss seeing him.

  9. Amazon.uk now making the upcoming 4 box sets available for preorder. I did a comparison between amazon.uk and amazon.fr and found virtually no difference in net cost shipped to me in the U.S. Amazon.de is considerably more expensive. On a different matter, there are Ebay auctions for individual cds by the various artists whose Black Saint recordings have now been issued by camjazz in boxes and which auctions have not recevied bids even at starting prices of #10.00.
  10. Thanks for offering but, no, I stick with the Mosaic gift card.

  12. I had a pretty good seven days. Last Tuesday I and some friends drove from Albany NY over to Amherst Ma to catch Amir ElSaffar's Two River ensemble. Trumpet/sax/bass/drums with two ouds (at times one tabla). Very Cool. One night later, I caught Fred Ho and Salim Washington at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY. Each musician did a solo bit that involved spoken word. Then they improvised a sax duo piece. Loved it. Along with his skill, Fred displays great humor in his work. Showed a music video set to his arrangment of In-a-godda-de-vida. This appears on one of his latest releases and is hilarious. Salim has a wonderful sound to his tenor. Also he is very well spoken Finally, this past Saturday, a friend co produced a concert at his wife's bookstore. The musicians were Bob Devos on guitar and Hendrik Meurkens on harmonica and vibes. Always special to hear jazz harmonica.
