Drove over to Pittsfield, Ma last night to see Randy Weston appear with Alex Blake on bass. He was being honored by berkshiresjazz.org for his contributions to the berkshire 50 years ago and to jazz since. Got his break working at the Music Inn where he was hired to wash dishes. My first time seeing Weston. He is very articulate and speaks and appears like a man 20 years younger than his 84 years. Played two sets both shy of one hour. Some of the tunes you could expect, Little Niles and Berskhire Blues. Also performed The Healer, African Sunrise and African cookbook amongst others. Blake was interesting. He sits while playing the bass. And he plays it almost like a guitar at time with considerable use of strumming and slapping with this right hand. Good time

just sharing this information: "MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO @ ARTS CENTER OF CAPITAL REGION - 4/1 At 7:00pm on Thursday, April 1, the celebrated NYC-based Matthew Shipp Trio (featuring Matthew Shipp, piano; Michael Bisio, bass; Whit Dickey, drums) will perform live at the opening of a new gallery show at The Arts Center of the Capital Region, 265 River Street in downtown Troy NY. The exhibition, which features locally-produced videos and still photos of internationally-known musicians by albanyjazz.com contributor Andrzej Pilarczyk and others, is called "Freedom Through Collective Improvisation: iEAR Presents! Free Jazz from the Sanctuary" and runs from April 1 through April 30. There will be an opening reception with light refreshments at 6 PM on April 1, and a closing reception during Troy Night Out on April 30. After moving to New York City in the mid-1980s, pianist Matthew Shipp quickly became one of the leading lights on the jazz scene. He was a sideman in the David S. Ware Quartet and also for Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory before making the decision to concentrate on his own music. He has recorded many albums but his most enduring relationships have been with two labels, Hatology and Thirsty Ear." And here is information about the "free jazz from the sanctuary" series: "Free Jazz from the Sanctuary: Freedom Through Collective Improvisation Join us at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy on April 1 as we celebrate the opening of a month-long gallery show featuring photos and videos from this series! Light refreshments at 6 PM, live music from the Matthew Shipp Trio (piano, with Michael Bisio on bass and Whit Dickey on drums) at 7 PM. Click here for more information. This 13-part series of jazz performance videos features some of the world's most talented improvisers performing a wide spectrum of music in the genre broadly known as free jazz. These uncompromising and inventive musicians create new languages and expressive forms, with an aesthetic and conceptual edge that challenges listeners to look at the world anew. Like freedom itself, free jazz as a term defies definition. The name most likely comes from Ornette Coleman's 1961 album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. This music celebrates the individual voice and collective action—and, like anyone exploring the limits of freedom, the musicians who play it sometimes find themselves on the edge of what is commercially, culturally and politically acceptable. But they endure… and their quest continues! These concerts were recorded live between 2007-2009 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media, a historic former church in North Troy. Each show is available on DVD directly from Downtown Music Gallery or online here—just click the links below: The featured musicians are: ■Amiri Baraka and Rob Brown ■The Thirteenth Assembly (Taylor Ho Bynum, Tomas Fujiwara, Mary Halvorson, Jessica Pavone) ■Ethnic Heritage Ensemble (Kahil El'Zabar, Ernest Dawkins, Corey Wilkes) ■Fay Victor Ensemble (Ken Filiano, Anders Nilsson, Michael TA Thompson, Fay Victor) ■Splatto Festival Chorus (Dave Barrett, Michael Bisio, Ed Mann, Todd Reynolds) ■Weasel Walter Trio (Peter Evans, Mary Halvorson, Weasel Walter) ■Trio Tarana (Sam Bardfeld, Ravish Momin, Brian Prunka) ■The Ras Ensemble (Clif Jackson, Dave Miller, Ras Moshe, Tor Yochai Snyder) ■Michael Vlatkovich Quartet (Christopher Garcia, Jonathan Golove, David Mott, Michael Vlatkovich) ■William Hooker ■Empty Cage Quartet (Ivan Johnson, Paul Kikuchi, Jason Mears, Kris Tiner) ■From Between Trio (Michel Doneda, Tatsuya Nakatani, Jack Wright) ■Sax Soup Poetry and Voice (Joe Giardullo, Pierre Joris, Nicole Peyrafitte) This series is a co-production of NY Media Alliance and the Department of the Arts at Rensselaer. The purpose: to create a cutting-edge, professional artistic media project to further a love and understanding for this brilliant, rarely heard music. NY Media Alliance, a 30 year-old non-profit advocate for the media arts, operates The Sanctuary for Independent Media. It’s a place where politically engaged interdisciplinary artists experiment with aesthetic form and challenging content. In this sanctuary, the overarching goal is to shed light on media arts’ vital role in the process of building a democratic society. The Department of the Arts at Rensselaer is generally considered to be the first integrated electronic arts program within a research university in the U.S., dealing with innovative aesthetic, cultural, and technical explorations of experimental media and electronic arts. Free Jazz from the Sanctuary was made possible in part with support from the New York State Council on the Arts Presenting Program and the NYS Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors when investigations into the practice of “payola” or “pay for play” by major recording and broadcasting companies were resolved. These settlements stipulated that funds paid by the music businesses should benefit the residents of New York State through music education and appreciation programs. The Free Jazz from the Sanctuary series is available for worldwide non-commercial broadcast distribution. Contact us for more information!

with curtis fowlkes on trombone, goldberg on clarinet, scott amendola on drums, and charlie hunter on guitar. saw them at a club in albany, ny that usually presents rock/prog. apparently they are on a small east coast tour ending up at the jazz standard in nyc in about 7 days. next up is the iron horse. about 90 minute set. while they have a cd out, fowlkes appeared to be a little unfamiliar with the music. amendola and hunter were a tremendous rhytmn section. set up groove that goldberg and fowles could ride on. goldberg's writings were interesting. I would see them again and may drive to the iron horse to do so

good morning. I sent you an email with my list thanks -
Evidently, at some point the rights to the music reverted to chapin's widow since the label issuing the set is not knitting factory but chapin's. check out www.thomaschapin.com. I wonder if the set comes with the same booklet as was provided by knitting factory

I recently did a day trip to boston/cambridge. in eight hours, I hit: cambridge: planet records, newbury comics (harvard square), stereojacks, twisted village, looney tunes, and cheapo records. avoided in your ear. had a short conversation with stereojack. boston: newbury comics on newbury street and looney tunes on boylston. can't say what hurt more-my head or my wallet

just to be clear, there is a difference between what was planned to be issued, i.e., 5,000, and what was actually issued. As I recall, the two Vee-Jay sets had really low numbers that were issued-around 2,000. And the Kid Ory set had a really low number before that licenses apparently timed out. Mosaic has never publically disclosed the actual number of sets issued per each release. So, looking back at the list of out of print sets, one cannot assume how easy it may be to pick-up a set since it is not known how many were actually sold. Also, "rare" as it applies to Mosaic may have a different meaning depending on the media you want. if you do not differentiate between lps and cds, then no problem. But if you want cd sets only, then some of the really early sets that were issued in both lps and cds, are really rare and expensive, i.e., the ammons/lewis.

I just wanted to share something. I heard roswell rudd and his band "Shout" yesterday at the lake george jazz festival. Afterwards I asked him to sign a few cd booklets I had. Two of the three booklets were dates with steve lacy-one live and one studio. Looking at the booklets, roswell signaled his preference for the live date. He stated that he prefered the live date because he specialized in "beautiful flaws." A short time later, he amended the phrase to "gorgeous flaws." Didn't sound like a pat line that he had used before.

DATE: Friday, October 19, 2007 TIME: 9:00 PM LOCATION: Chapel + Cultural Center, Rensselaer Campus, Troy, New York Admission to Anthony Braxton is free and open to the public. Anthony Braxton 12(+1)tet — Ghost Trance Music: World-renowned saxophonist and composer Anthony Braxton, with his 12-piece ensemble the 12(+1)tet, will perform and conduct from his most recent series called Ghost Trance Music. The performers play and conduct, taking different roles, as they collage compositions from Braxton's Ghost Trance catalogue. As a collective, the group moves freely between the performance of compositions and improvisations, between solos and ensemble playing – and yet create a magical unity full of sparks. This is unusual music that carries away all those willing to let-go into its mystery. Come experience this optimistic and surprising frontier of contemporary music, performed under the inspiration and direction of Anthony Braxton, one of America's most dynamic musical forces. Curated by Micah Silver. Anthony Braxton 12+1tet [AB (reeds), Taylor Ho Bynum (cor), Jessica Pavone (vla), Jay Rozen (tba), Carl Testa (b), Aaron Siegel (perc), Mary Halvorson (g), Steve Lehman (reeds), James Fei (reeds), Andrew Raffo Dewar (reeds), Reut Regev (tb), Sara Schoenbeck (bsn), Nicole Mitchell (fl)] check out these urls for information: http://empac.rpi.edu/events/2007/braxton.html (has link to directions) http://www.rpi.edu/web/C+CC/
