My two favorite Coltrane album are Sun Ship and First Meditations. So I'm looking forward to this release in a big way. It'll be a nice addition to my 90+ discs of Coltrane material. BTW, someone mentioned earlier how different Sun Ship sounded from other Coltrane albums. I'd say that goes for his entire '65 output. The Quartet had reached its apotheosis that year, and they were playing what I still consider to be the greatest music I've ever heard.

Couldn't you just do a full system restore from Time Machine?
-
I hope it works for what you want to do, Tom. It hasn't ever let me down. Please keep us updated!
-
OK, I had a feeling that was the case. I'm nowhere near tech savvy enough to know "red book" from Red Hook, but figured it was isolated enough to be a problem with the programming (?) of the disc.

Waahlaah! Why didn't I think of that?! Hardbopjazz, I HIGHLY recommend trying Dropbox. I have been using it for years, and it is worth its weight in gold. Michael will also have to download it on his machine, but once you both go through the quick and easy setup process you'll be able to send him those files and not have to worry about whether his optical drive will get along with the DVD you've burned. You also want be confined to any file size limitations imposed by most e-mail providers. He can't read the DVD. His MAC locks up. I've tried three different times. Macs are known to have not so good DVD players. My three year old iMac has been refusing some commercially released DVDs for some time now, DVD-Rs are even more of a problem. CDs are a different matter and all but one disc of my colection can be read by my iMac. Do you ever have that occasional disc that will only rip at, say, 2X? I've had that happen twice on my iMac. And both discs were in perfect condition. I just ask because I always wondered if it was the disc, the iMac, whathaveyou...?
-
Have you tried leaving them in their original format and letting Michael convert them to MP4's on his Mac? Do you get the option to choose how you format the disc. I.e., data, or DVD video? Having switched to Mac a little over a year ago I can tell you Mac's and PC's get along as well as Jobs and Gates did.

Never even heard the name Kikuchi before today. Younger cat I take it? -
Now THAT I can live with! I'm with you entirely on cd's. I felt the same way from day one. Hell, no more wow and flutter?! Sign me up, especially since the grand majority of my collection was on cassette. I hear you on the larger artwork. But, as I think I mentioned earlier, I'm all about getting rid of what I now deem needless clutter. Seems odd considering how huge I am on music (my son is named after two Jazz musicians, by design, after all), but I'm more into simply not having so much "stuff" anymore. And with all the advances in digital music files over the last few years, along with a nice low-to-midrange headphone amp (Headroom Micro) I feel like I'm getting the best of both worlds. In a relative way, mind you... Internet forums and comment sections seem to bring out the worst in a lot of people (not accusing Scott Dolan here ). I'm far more brash in person.

More Irritating Than Jarrett's Groanings

Hard not to notice all the hoots and groans, but I have to say they really don't bother me either. -
Thank you. I tend to react to snide remarks by tweaking. Nothing personal. My first cd was in 1984. Foreignor's Agent Provacateur, of all god forsaken albums. My first impressions were the exact same as yours. Onkyo amp with Boston Acoustic loudspeakers. But, I wasn't the audiophile making the arguments against digital music. I'm assuming you weren't either. But, as you can clearly assess from the quote above, or anywhere on the intertubes if you so choose, many were. And THAT is my only point.
-
The same argument has been going on for 30 years. I probably should have mentioned that before. That was just when I was the most exposed to it. It's all very confusing, I know. Here, I'll let the founder of PS Audio speak for himself: "There was a time when we could accurately say that most all digital was inferior to most all analog – the CD vs. vinyl debate." How odd! "We"? "We" must be what he refers to me as. And concluding the article that piece came from: "So, the next time someone tells you they only listen to vinyl or analog and they can’t stand the “sound” of digital, you can smile knowing full well the truth of the matter." http://www.pstracks.com/pauls-posts/opening-age-debate/6238/

Man, this statement is so incorrect it seems tongue-in-cheek. My buddy owned a digital studio in the late 90's, and there were TONS of arguments within the industry of digital vs. analog. Sampling rates could never reproduce sound as well as analog, and so forth... That debate is about 30 years old right about now. And in order for it to be a debate...
-
That's actually a valid point. When cd's first hit the market it was supposed to be this major step backwards sonically, but cd's now sound lightyears better than first gens did and the difference between them and records are laughably negligible. When digital music files first started popping up, they were supposedly a major step backwards sonically, but with newer technology like FLAC, Apple Lossless, hell even AAC they are FAR superior first gen mp3's. But, mp3's gained a reputation, and for many that reputation is carved in stone and it informs their perception. Whatever makes people happy makes people happy, but some of the arguments seem a bit silly, IMO.

No explanation needed, my friend. What you are about to undertake is impressive and humble, from my standpoint. I hope you find peace in doing so, and hope you stay in touch.

Fair enough, brother.

I'd say I'm sorry to hear of this, but being there for your parents strikes me as being a rewarding experience. Best wishes to you and the folks. Back on topic, I'd encourage you to at least give some of the lossless technology (i.e. Apple Lossless, FLAC) a try if you haven't already. I used to be quite the audio snob, but the newer technology has brought me around. Or, Maybe I just don't care as much anymore. Who knows?
-
Blueberry and pomagranate Gatorade G2 here. Though, I did giggle at your "mp3's are simply ghastly!!!" Comment yesterday. They sure used to be. But, I have to say the technology has improved exponentially over the last few years. I suppose that's a byproduct of them becoming commodified in recent years. Maybe Metallica had a point after all.
-
But I never said I didn't enjoy the music on the RVG's. Just noted the thin and brittle sound quality on some of the ones I have. No big deal. I've got a Pink Floyd album that sounds rather mushy. Had the entire Beatles catalog before the recent remaster, and they all sounded flat as a pancake. Doesn't mean they weren't good, or that I didn't like them. Hey, even a thin and watery single malt is still a damn good drink!!
-
I don't have a closed mind. I've heard $20,000 systems before. *yawn* Yeah they sound awesome. But If I ever have to spend that kind of money simply to enjoy music, I'll be looking for a new hobby. Quickly.
-
All systems are presented with the same information. It's what they do with it afterwards that makes the difference. As I said before, your system cannot create something from nothing. Hence no more dynamic range. Period. You don't have to believe it, but the nice part about science is that it remains true whether you believe it or not. And I do enjoy the music. And without having to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to do so. I consider myself rather fortunate.

Justin Timberlake + Comedy = Greatness?

Whenever I've seen Timberlake perform comedy I was impressed. Very talented cat.
