  1. The video card in the computer probably doesn't output at that high of a resolution, check the specs and see what the max output is.
  2. According to Billy Gibbons, you should always play that tune in the key of "G Demolished".
  3. One of these days I really need to find out what "chooglin" is!
  4. Sounds good man! I look forward to meeting you when you get back. Hold deposit given to apartment, now just waiting for the fun application process to complete. If everything works out, I can move into the apartment in the morning.
  5. Okay gang, I just needed to vent, had to get a little frustration out...that's all. I've had a crappy run of luck for the past week and it finally caught up with me. I've shaken it off and I'm not leaving... I went and looked at a cheap apartment in one of the older downtown neighborhoods (Jefferson Park historic district), it's basically perfect for my needs. I should be able to just barely swing it financially and it's available for move-in on Friday morning. I'm waiting for a call back from the landlady (she was the only person today that actually returned my phone calls). I was able to meet the current tenant and he gave me the lowdown on the area, what streets are cool, what streets to avoid. He's even going to leave some of the furniture behind. Since it's right smackdab in the center of LA, it should make bussing to work relatively painless and I don't really need to take freeways anywhere. There is also a public library across the street so that's convenient as well. Keep your fingers crossed...
  6. *idiotic rambling removed*
  7. Does anybody in Los Angeles every return phone calls? I've left at least 30 messages at apartments and room shares and have gotten about 2 callbacks so far. You'd think someone might be interested in actually taking my money... Frustrating as HELL.
  8. That box set is worth every penny. It contains an extra disc with Biography Channel documentaries on both Loy and Powell, plus the discs themselves have trailers and shorts from the same era.
  9. Another Thin Man was also adapted from Hammett's "Farewell Murderer". In Myrna Loy's biography she said that Hammett was on set for most of the filming of that third installment...and that it was very hard to get work done because him and William Powell were drinking like fish the entire time. The Thin Man series is one of the first times that the characters (brought to life by Powell & Loy), became much larger than the original novel itself and their witty banter and "fun" marriage was the real draw to the theaters. Also helps that the first 5 films in the series are pretty much universally excellent, with only the 6th feeling tired. The Thin Man Goes Home (5th film) has an excellent comedic script by Robert Riskin (Capra's writing partner).
  10. My favorite Woolrich story is "Black Alibi" (which was turned into a fantastic film called The Leopard Man). I've also got to give a shout to "THE THIN MAN", my first and still favorite Hammett.
  11. My Grandmother had to go into long term care recently and that's been extremely hard on the whole family. In the long run though, she's much happier now because she has a social outlet with all the other residents and she's in better spirits than she has been for many years. Living alone in a house in West Virginia was not good for her, so even though she really didn't want to leave initially...now she doesn't even mention it anymore.
  12. Yes. I'm wondering why "Catch-22" seems to be my life story.
  13. Hey gang, thanks for the good wishes! I did arrive in LA safely, though I do not recommend getting a blow out in the middle of the Arizona desert, not much fun. I'm going out to find a different place to stay tomorrow, the initial room for rent situation ended up not being what I need, so I'm temporarily based at Motel 6 while I regroup and get some places to check out. I'm fine, Pywacket (cat) is fine and southern California is quite lovely, looking forward to being more than "a tourist" real soon.

    Mal Waldron

I love Mal (especially the era before his "hiatus"). I grew to appreciate him because of the Coltrane Prestige big box; whenever a certain arrangement would grab me, I'd check the liner notes and sure enough it was a session that Mal was responsible for. That Coltrane box transformed itself into a "Mal Waldron" box about that time and it was quite a wonderful journey. It's been many years since I've listened to some of these sessions, but I have a feeling I would still enjoy them immensely. Mal probably had almost as distinctive use of space in his playing as Monk did. They use that space very differently, and I'm guessing it was just naturally "built into" their chemistry. I still remember playing the Impressions trio set over and over when I first got it, what an amazing album! There are plenty of recordings from later in his career that I love as well, though his playing did change drastically between the two eras. My Dear Family is probably my favorite of his later recordings. Even if the only tune he ever arranged was "One By One", I'd still be a fan.
  15. happy late birthday!
  16. I've found a room for rent in a large residential house in Sunland, a little farther north than I originally planned, but it's a really good deal and the area looks quite lovely from the photos I've seen (I love mountains). I'll be checking out the house on Saturday. It's a month-to-month deal, so if I want to move later it's easy. Pretty cool how quickly things can come together when you've got a goal and the focus to achieve it.
  17. thanks man! I kind of impressed myself too.
  18. updated this thread instead of creating a new one.
  19. I look back at this thread and think...I can't believe how few people responded...I didn't even respond and it's one of my favorite Mobley sessions! Oh well. "The Morning After" is a friggin' masterpiece of a track, at least that's my view. The rest of the session slides down easy like a greasy burger that does not require chewing to enjoy.
  20. thanks man, I needed a good laugh. Awesome.
  21. The rhythm section is enough to make this a winner in my book. Excellent album!
  22. Most DVD players sound too "soft" to me, could be imagination I guess, but I've had basically the same impression with every one I've owned. I would actually recommend a blu ray player instead of the standard DVD player, at least you're ready when the plug gets pulled on DVDs completely. Generally I think blu ray players sound a little better when playing CDs.
  23. This sounds like a record I need to hear, I've been on a big Coryell kick for awhile and this combination intrigues me.
  24. I added a few more Wow... that's quite the list! Thanks!
