  1. Since the other film corner stays firmly rooted in foreign language and "art house" style films, I thought it would be nice to have a place where we could discuss FUN stuff! Captain America: The First Avenger. Went and saw this movie today (in 3-D) and I gotta say I was more than pleasantly surprised, I had a great time! I'm not the biggest fan of comic book movies and I've been rather nonplussed by several of the recent entries...but this film was the exception. I think it was the best since the first Iron Man movie. Having an interesting story, good actors and solid direction definitely helped it along. There was a nice mix of physical effects in addition to CGI (which was realistically handled) and the 3-D effects were used to create depth of field not just to hurl things at you. I think Evans did a superb job in the title role and gave the character life, not just put on the costume and voila, he's a superhero. The WWII setting was handled beautifully, I especially liked the "buy war bond" montage. Stanley Tucci was also a joy in his small but pivotal role. This film helps to make up for a truly lackluster summer that has kept me "out" of the theater due to poorly handled yet heavily promoted garbage. The "genre film junkie" gives this one a solid 3 stars out of 4.
  2. Zero The Hero "Where the heros sit by the river with their magic and their music as they eat raw liver"
  3. No, Keith was playing a club date with the Stones that night.
  4. You looked under the appropriate name, not your fault the label had it wrong.
  5. Robert Johnson
  6. as is life, which is how the disease works it's magic.
  7. LA Times: "New details emerge in severed penis case" What a news story headline that is.
  8. CNN is carrying the story now as well.
  9. Reportedly found dead. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2018020/Amy-Winehouse-confirmed-dead.html
  10. I saw the movie when it debuted, but I wasn't familiar with Ornette at the time, so I never made the connection. I'll need to revisit one day, if I can get in the right mood for it (which hasn't happened yet since it's initial theatrical run).
  11. I've always felt the need to label this stuff "prog" ends up pigeonholing too many different sounding bands together into a clump. Genesis didn't sound like King Crimson who didn't sound like Jethro Tull, etc. I like huge batches of the stuff, mostly because I prefer music with a bit of audacity to it. If most of the general population finds it annoying there's a good chance I won't.
  12. 68 here in mid-central Los Angeles.
  13. Scott "Wino" Weinrich - Adrift
  14. Death Walks Behind You is a great record. I think the followup album (In Hearing Of) was probably the best all-around album they did.
  15. Bruce Dickinson has been given an honorary doctorate in music. The Iron Maiden frontman was given this degree by Queen Mary College in London on Tuesday, July 19. Dickinson actually got a degree in history from the same college in 1979, although he admitted during his acceptance speech that he spent half his time at the college rehearsing with his band at the time
  16. Looking at the picture it's interesting to note "NO" sound dampening anywhere. Concrete walls and beamed ceiling working like a broadband diffuser. I would imagine the room being very "live".
  17. The melody to "Madmen At The Screens" is almost identical to "Machine Messiah" from Drama (not surprising considering who is involved). I've been really enjoying the album. I'm more impressed by the individual songs on the second half of the album. The only false step is "bumpy ride", fortunately it's short. The solo acoustic number "Solitaire" is a very nice Howe feature. I liked Drama, so I was expecting to dig this album (I know that puts me in the vast minority).
  18. I saw Morse in 2004 with Deep Purple, he was absolutely stunning and looked like he was having the time of his life. That's what I like to see. In fact, the whole band looked like grey haired kids on stage, just having a blast and goofing around. Don Airey and Morse have a real nice chemistry too, I was concerned when Lord left, but those two really hit if off musically.
  19. Dick Hyman scares the hell out of me.
  20. Thanks for sharing this! I'm a big fan of Morse.
  21. Did you guys download this new track and listen to it? It's KILLER!
