Maybe it could be a Mosaic Single.

There was a discussion of this great set before and after it came out. Damn! I'd probably cherry pick these but I want that one hour Hawkins concert. (I wish they'd use slimmer boxes-- my shelves are getting full.)

The thread with advice for the "newbie" got me thinking about what performances are considered must have jazz masterpieces. For example: Louis Armstrong: West End Blues Bix: Singin' the Blues Coleman Hawkins: Body And Soul Bird: Koko etc And if we want to add cuts from albums: Coltrane:L Giant Steps But when you get to Ellington and Miles I'm starting to think: This Way Lies Madness. Anyone want to add to this list?

I put this question to the Duke-Lym list serve. Apparently there is a bootleg which contains a couple the of songs without crowd noises and also some alternate takes. As a result of the query a member of the list e-mailed Mosaic and asked if they'd consider releasing a Mosaic single without crowd sounds and with alternates. Scot replied that they'd look into it.

That session is also in the box set Jsngry mentions above.

I like the Live at Rocklands a lot. BTW Where can one fin the Open Door material? I did 't see it at Amazon or CDUniverse.

The crowd was added and iirc this music has never been released without the added crowd sounds. I'll try to confirm this.

Just listening to the Portrait of Cannonball cd and it seems to be in mono. Were many recordings still done mono only as late as July '58?

Given that Dan Morgenstern describes the take that was left out as "essentially the same" as one that was included, if they are having financial difficulties I'm willing to volunteer to live with what I got (numbered 0599) or to pay for the manufacturing and shipping of a replacement if I get obsessive about it-- which I probably will. I guess you earn your reputation is for quality by being obsessive. I was involved with the Criterion Collection at its beginnings and I remember that that we redid one of the discs from the King Kong Lazerdisc box because it contained one faulty still frame.

My 2 cents worth (and maybe it's worth less). This is Jim's board and he can do whatever he likes with it-- including closing it down (though that would make me very sad). It''s my experience that people are often more aggressive in print than in person. Some of the most vitriolic critics and writers I've met seemed rather timid when I met them. (This isn't always the case, I realize.) The internet allows us all to hide behind our keyboards. When people are anonymous they have a mask to hide behind too. (Clementine was an extreme example of that.) We should try to be as reasonable on-line as we are in person. You'd think having to type something out would make you less l likely to blurt something out but I know that in my case that's somehow not how it works.

I remember the show and the march around the table but I'm not sure what years. (I was born in '43 and I guess the show was broadcast in Canada.) The video slightly disillusioned me: I always pictured them sitting around a table and eating breakfast.

There's also a DVD called The Last Concert but the description at Amazon calls it the "last recorded concert". This has his regular group with Kenny Barron but on a couple of tunes from Apassionado adds synths. If you like latter day Getz I recommend this DVD.

That first song the band plays is a rarely heard Gershwin piece: iirc it's called "Wintergreen for President" and is from "Of Thee I Sing" or the other political musical they did the name of which I can't remember right now.

I was surprised that the Richard Davis article didn't mention his playing on Astral Weeks. (Though I think I remember reading somewhere else that he wasn't very impressed with Van Morrison. Also think I remember reading that he was supposed to be on the recent Astral Weeks Live tour but couldn't make it.)

I found a copy in Toronto. Pretty interesting though I still don't care for most CTI records. It looks like the magazine is usually devoted to music I don't know much about.

Do you mean 2 different DVD releases or that the film is different in each release?

I had a strange experience with that one. Bought it before I went to Barcelona but didn't read it until afterwards. Big mistake. One of the characters lived exactly where we were staying. Would have been fun to know that in advance.

I think only the first one is available in the US. Second one now out in UK. Don't know about the third one. I've read the first two. I like them but I think because he died before they were published nobody edited them. (Or at least they read that way to me.)
