Great book. The Penguin edition includes a map for a walking tour of Barcelona which takes you to various places mentioned in the book. Unfortunately I read the book shortly after returning from Barcelona this past Spring. I wish I'd read it before we went-- ot=r better yet while we were there. However I did discover that the hotel in which we stayed seems to have been the location for the home of the character Nuria Monfort. My kids stayed in the room which what I think would have been hers.

Well the majors do often pay royalties and I suspect always pay songwriters. (The fee is set by congress!) And when American independants put a lot of time, money and effort into reissus such as the early Charles Mingus box from UpTown they are often ripped off by the likes of Lonehill and Proper. (Ask Nessus.)

There's a fair amount about Vian in the booklet accompanying the Jazz in Paris: Saint-Germain-des-Pres box set and the first number on the first cd is by him. This booklet is more informative than Vian's own Manual of Saint-Germain-des-Pres book which is a nice object-- beautifully bound and illustrated but not very easy reading. It seems mainly an attack on the Parisian main stream newspapers' attiudes to the left bank scene. BTW Vian wrote the original liner notes to Miles' Lp of the music from Ascenseur pour l'eachafaud. From the notes I presume that Vian was present at the session.

I have Digital Video Essentials and it worked very well for me. I believe they will both do the job. I've heard that Avia might have a more user friendly interface. Wow I was about to order Video Essentials from Amazon (through the forum of course) but I read the customers reviews and they really soured me on it. I also noted that it was 5 years old. Am I being too sceptical?

This morning on NPR they had a piece about dissident Greek Monks who have fortified themselves in a monastery. As they told the story they played Monk's version of Caravan under it, finally bringing the music up when they made the joke that these must have been "Thelonious Monks". I'm doing my best to putthe X back in Xmas. Actually I'm having a good time. Two nights ago we lit the menorah and then decorated the Xmas tree. (My wife's a convert and thinks it's sacriligous to put up the tree before the lighting of candles on the first night of Chanuka.)

Thanks for the info, Ray. I got a 30" LCD set a while ago. Love it. the other night watched Finding Nemo just cause it looked so good. I suspect the source was a digital and had never gone through film. it looked better than it did in theaters (though I never saw it projected digitally).

I like my hdtv so much that I'm thinking of getting another. I notice that rear projection tvs (I don't think I've seen any that are just monitors) are much cheaper than flat screen tvs and aren't actualy that thick nowadays. Is the visual quality as good?

They apparently ran out pf the first pressing. I wonder how many they pressed.

I went to many clubs and concerts in the '60s and '70s and don't ever remember records being sold. Sometimes the artists would plug their records and if they were lucky their labels made sure they were available at local stores. First time I ever saw records being sold at a gig were at some local folk concerts.

No. You simply burn cds and do whatever you want with them, including transfer them to other computers. Also once they're on an iPod there's soft ware available to put them on another computer. In fact I haven't noticed any limitations-- though supposedly you can only burn a limited number of cds from the original download. However I believe that once you burn a cd and rip it to a computer you can do whatever you like.

Me too. Actually Coltrane in general. Most years it would have been Miles but this cd plus the Fearless Leader set got me to replaying things like Africa Brass. Probably the single most played cd in my house was the soundtrack to "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man". If you ordered it from iTunes you got an bonus track by Laurie Anderson that's not in the film (or as a bonus on the DVD).

Because of all the positive discussion here I got this in cd. I liked it but didn't think it compared to the Monk/Coltrane concert until I got to In Walked Bud on which Johnny Griffin takes an amazing solo. However I just realized that that cut isn't on the Lp: it's a bonus track on the cd from a sesson Monk and Keepnews originally thought wasn't suitable for release!
